Hard to believe that’s a import,I’m more like that’s 100% from the us with that kind of problems,I have. 22 year old mare and she’s got none of those issues,out of my 16 horses i Will say non of them have any leg problems.

I work with different breeds specifically to avoid those problems….Why would you even consider a line with soo many problems starting at a young age pretty much…So yes,there plenty of European drafts with none of those problems not even at 20 years of age.

@@steliannistor1878 thanks for the info. I am trying to get a pair of draft horses to farm a few acres so im trying to get as much info as to the pros and cons of different breeds. Do you have an advice?

@@juanjaimes1836 Percheron’s are ok,Comtois are good,Hungarian or Romanian drafts are awesome also..With out most of the problems mentioned on this video,for the most part..Plus even estheticlly are better loocking.

Years ago we had a Belgian stallion with that condition. We tried many things that didn't work. A old horseman told us to keep the hair clipped and spray bleach on it everyday. It took about a year to clear up, but it never came back with routine maintenance such as keeping him clipped and dry as possible.

Even though that is an awful diagnosis, it still doesn't take away from the good traits of the breed - the docility and calmness as well as their impressive strength! I hope a cure can be found. In Starke Pferde magazine I read that the disease may be hereditary in most Brabants, but does not always show.

You hit the nail on the head. This breed has many great attributes. We have a group of us going back to east Germany this fall to import older brabant genetics with cleaner legs to breed back on our American brabants here. Very exciting times in the breed. Many from Europe tell us what we are doing here in the US and Canada is the best hope for the breed.

@@legacyhorseloggingbrabanth1536 I think you are looking at the right place: The Thuringian Cold-blooded Draft, foremost used in east Germany as well as the Westphalian Draft ( not as numerous, but western Germany) had been developed on the basis of the Brabants long before the latter one's breeding pool shrank. Inadvertently Belgian and Dutch breeders may have narrowed their breeding pool verthe last 80 years to exactly those in which most have the genetics for CPL. The report I read says only about 20% of Brabants do not have these genes. I wish you go luck in finding the right horses to bring back to the US and Canada!

Thank you for this video, we have a fresian with this that we manage with exercise, clipping, leg wrapping with beeswax cream to keep skin supple, lymphatic drainage and stretching. Always check/feel under feathers when buying a new horse was my lesson and now I have seen it, I notice it on others too great video 👍

I do not think that the occurrence of CPL should deter anyone from breeding, as long as one is aware of the special needs of the horse and the fact that it might affect their longevity. In the Bavarian village I grew up in there were several loggers who because of the positive traits I mentioned above used Brabants despite of the risks with the disease.
