500 dollars!!? 🤣Brother that is basically a Japanese 'nata,' which is a specialized hatchet/delimbing forestry tool. I don't know if you've used the one made by Silky but you can get a Silky full size nata for 70-100 dollars, which is significantly cheaper. I've broken down a few entire pine/spruce trees using nothing but my nata and a folding saw/chainsaw (tho i did split the large rounds with my bigger axe at the end). They are nice tools. Hatchets split better but natas delimb easier and are easier to safely handle in my experience. You should directly compare this versus a silky nata

Silky Nata is definitely a good budget choice. The competition chopper is going to bite a bit deeper due to geometry but the 500 dollar price is a hard pill to swallow. I own a silky nata it's a great tool.
@hillbilly4christ638
@hillbilly4christ638 10 ай бұрын
The silky has a better handle, sheath and ergonomics. It most likely is heavier, at least the 240. Best chopper i own. I have a swedish brush axe that delimbs and chops saplings like nothing else. I favor the brush axe over the nata, but if I want controlled chops I go to the nata. A really good pair is a nata with a small curved saw. That combination will take care of all your campfire needs and then you will need a bushcraft blade. Mora robust and perhaps a opinel with the fork and spoon option for close camp chores and food prep. A really good axe is always a good idea. Council tool Hudson Bay axe is packable and handy and will meet virtually any need outside of the rest. So there you have it, the camping steel set!

@@hillbilly4christ638 I don't know what a swedish brush axe is but if it's a billhook than I'm with you, those are basically the best tools for delimbing in cold, northern climates. The 240 isn't heavier than this cold steel. I just weighed my nata 240 and it weighs 25.6 ounces (the cold steel is 28 here) with my orange lanyard in my handle (so I can find it). I also wrapped the very bottom of the handle twice in some hockey tape and that keeps the handle from wanting to split apart at all, also orange because I once set it down and couldn't find it in some brush..... yikes. I agree though. Nata + curved handsaw + a small bush knife is my exact combo, I happen to own most of the mora knives but I always just use a basic companion

Yeah axes and hatchets will always be better than a chopper. Choppers are for fun and messing around, hatchets and axes are for getting work done. All these batoning videos are ridiculous - don't get me wrong I watch them all 😂 but I take a reasonable knife, quality hatchet or forest axe and a folding Silky saw if I'm camping or on long backwoods trips.

I dunno, its waaaay too expensive for CS 3V especially because their quality has been lacking lately, I've found uneven grinds and lots of inclusions in three of five Master Hunter 3V blades I purchased (intended to gift them) and a bad grind and small fractures throughout the 3V SRK I just got two days ago. I've always loved Cold Steel products and I own many but now I feel like I'm getting ripped off with every order.. They need to get their shit together before they ruin the brand!!

No kidding bro! That is my kitchen knife right now! The cold steel jimi slash! I love it! The knife is very utilitarian! It cut fish and tuna effortlessly, beef brisket, even chopping vegetables when I'm cooking! And as a single guy I love to cook after work hours I go home and doing some cooking. That knife can even chop frozen meat effortlessly! I love it! That knife replaces my old Chinese made santoku, but I'm still keeping my Japanese made santoku knife. For fillet? No! That knife it too big! It's only good for slicing and chopping.

Alter it. I've been doing it for years, it's pretty easy if you're super careful to keep it cool & not ruin the heat treat. Cut for a literal second at a time (if that) with a cutoff wheel or right angle & immediately dunk & stir it around in a bucket of water (until you feel zero heat) after every tiny cut. I've put waves on my Voyager XLs, a tougher BK2 style tip/profile on CS Survivalist, etc.

@@johnnyshanksalot8358 G'day mate, yep I've cut down a coup[e of full size felling axe heads in the same way, to ..... lotsa names for essentially the same pattern, (Greenland, Hudson Bay, Montreal patterns are often used), but basically like a small forestry axe. Re-profiling the body/blade thinkness and edge was the most difficult and time consuming part and if I did in fact alter the HT, I reckon if anything, it's now better, i.e. perhaps not quite as soft, but still not chippy. Not sure I'd be willing to mess with a 500 knicker seax/froe type job though, lol. In any case, I've found my parangs/Skrama proficient and versatile enough as is, (and as a strong advocate of pairing), together with a good belt knife, the bases are covered. Cheers Duke. P.S, you mentioned the CS Survivalist; must admit I hung out for the scaled version, since I didnt want to do a paracord or tape wrap ... I carry some Paracord, No. 36 bankline and Gorilla tape regardless, (so I dont need the emergency material). Decent enough sheath too. Fair to say, 52100 has a very good rep, and @ 7 in. it provides a bit extra span over 5-6 in. jobs. Batoning the bejeezus out of it through 4 X 6 in. Aussie Redgum fence posts, with no issues, attests to that. .....which segues into my final point; I'm not generally a fan of full flats, but CS has got the angle of the dangle just right on this one to still spit very effectively ..... and incidentally, ESEEs, for some reason, are inordinately priced here, so at the end of the day, ripper bang for buck IMO, ....... modified or not ; )

Almost $1,000 with tax here in Canada. Jimi is the reason I bought the Condor woodbuster years ago because I wanted a good chopping knife but that was before he made his own model. Recently I bought the El Chete which came on sale. Two choppers are enough for me, unless somebody has a big sale.

OUTSTANDING REVIEW (*as always), Aaron. I have one and I LOVE IT! ❤ I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I've heard some folks kinda' bag on the fact that the sheath doesn't have a belt loop. Honestly, I think that my FAVORITE thing about the sheath is that it doesn't have a belt loop. It reminds me of the "mask" on many axes, hatchets, and splitting wedges/mauls.

A Peters heat treat is not too much either & people exaggerate wildly about the difficulty of grinding it. Truth is the whole field's like that, if you love good knives never research the real costs (or cost differences of material), you'll get super mad lol.
