That backplane is going to take some time to solder up. 😎

The 3 "raw" soldering videos total 3 hours and 22 minutes, that turns into a little over 10 minutes of footage in final video. Editing it down is not insignificant time either!

I was half expecting to hear "Yakety Sax" when you were doing the timelapse soldering race. 😊 Anyway, I enjoy these Extras videos as it's nice to see the PCBs you make and the process of soldering on all the parts. Your CPU is a rather pleasant jigsaw!

I've been worrying about not being allowed to have leaded solder anymore recently, working out my average grams per year and building a stockpile.... so watching this had me wondering how many grams worth you've got through assembling this monster. :)

When are they going to stop it's sale? Can still get it easily enough.

@@JamesSharmanExtras I'm not sure but most of the "by the rules" shops are now saying "we won't sell this to hobbyists, business customers only" but I got ... cough.... half a kilo from "a slightly dodgy shop" and another 300g from a private seller on E. Bay.

the less you have transistors doing things, the less heat you will have, direct linear multiplicative relation, ie, pre-calculated-rom instructions in memory works like a ramdac, very simple fp16/int16 computer

What model is that digital microscope?
@olavl8827
@olavl8827 Жыл бұрын
It's on AliExpress as "2MP 1-500X Zoom USB Microscope 8 LED Diameter 12mm AV Microscope with Metal Bracket". But there are many such USB webcam-microscopes that would do the trick. This one just seems a little sleeker and more adjustable than most.

The exact model isn't sold anymore but search "usb microsocope" on ali or ebay and you usually get one with the same body design. I like it as the it's low profile in the overhead view.

It feels like I missed a few videos... Patreon only perhaps? Or maybe my memory is glitching, always a possibility. It has been 8 months since the last time the CPU was featured in a video. Episode 101, didn't touch on anything except tuning the CPU to run as fast as possible. But I might just have forgotten any future plans for the CPU.

There is a big main channel video on the backplane that will be out tomorrow, I’ll be pushing another side video to that tonight so they are both out just before that one.

Rather than using the cross-connect boards (with 2 female connectors on it) with the bus breakout board - why not put the female connectors on the back of the bus breakout board? You'd still need the cross-connect board when not using the breakout boards, but I think there would be 2 advantages to skipping them when using the bus breakouts 1. The whole assembly would be slightly narrower. 2. The breakout connectors would be easier to use without being hemmed in by the cross-connect boards, they would also be higher up than all other components, again making it easier to access.

Good question, I have thought about soldering one like that as a debug connection while it’s bridging two other boards. Stand alone I would prefer for it to be flush on the desk

@@JamesSharmanExtras well the good thing is that you can use the exact same board either way 😄
