CQ 160m CW contest January 2024

Here is some of my activity during the January 2024 version of the CQ Worldwide 160 meter CW contest.

Scott, I have to admire your knowledge of signal to noise setup, I am sick and tired of watching all these SDR headcases running their radios wide open with S9 of noise, and no a CLUE about receive. You have a great setup there, and something, I am in the process of doing here is improving my receive station. Well done de Ei2iP.

Well, as Roly, ZL1BQD, says, "any fool can transmit...the key is to receive"...pretty much nails it. That said, my ambient noise was lower the next night so I wish I had done this video then. 73! de WX0V

On the European beverage the storm to our southwest was killing our rx. Still managed around 120 euros and their sunrise at n4ss. Storms couldn’t have waited a week. Haha

160m is a different world on the coasts. You guys have great paths to EU and AF while W6/W7 own OC and AS. Move to ND for last night's activity and you'll be happy to work a single EU...but as the saying goes; smoke 'em if you got 'em...73! de WX0V

Envious at noise level My vertical T for 160 was s9 today without preamp Philippines tropical noise Were able to qso tx5s on 160 cw ? Seems like that they were only there a few days Fortunately i worked back in 2013

My noise is S-9+ as shown here, but the KK5JY LoG helps. There are no WX0V Qs with TX5S as I already have Clipperton on 9 bands. The best shot at them on 160m was via FT8 (better than 2:1 FT8 versus CW). I have seen you spotted on 160m but no path from here. The main guy spotting you is a W7 who runs 600 foot Beverages in a sparsely populated area. We just need the right path but may have to wait for the next solar minima. 73! de WX0V

Scott, does the contest continue tonight? I made my first ever CW QSO yesterday with TX5S by decoding with an app and using the text to CW keyer in my IC-7100! I'd be interested in going to a POTA with my 160m antenna and making a few Qs. 73 VE3GKT Just checked. It does! You probably won't hear me calling CQ, but maybe I'll be hunting a few.

Enjoy the contest tonight...I may or may not participate. Congratulations on your CW Q with TX5S! Eventually, you'll get good enough at CW to only use the app as back-up, or skip it all-together. The keyers are nice, though...73! de WX0V
