You filmed this twenty one years after I was a ride operator on the Giant Dipper. It was such a joyful and carefree time in my life that has long since passed into hazy memories. It's perfectly painful to watch this and think back to those halcyon days.

I feel ya. Spent most of my summers in Santa Cruz (grew up in, yes, San Jose). The only thing missing here is scenes of the old pre-quake Mall, which are nearly impossible to find now...

An amazing song and cool video. I had always thought this was about a imagined relationship of even going thru the turnstile to getting married "where thousands fled before their turn came" and and we could wait awhile or play it real cool. life that bitter sweet ride, so good, lets do it again

RIP Chalo. He truly rules on this track. It takes a very skilled drummer to play a slow song, but Chalo nailed it. You will be missed in all of your bands. Charlie Quintana, 1962-2018

I'm a Santa Cruz resident. Came here from a link in an issue of the local newsletter "Santa Mierda!", in the section covering what's still great about Santa Cruz. You've captured the vibe very well. I haven't been to the Boardwalk in years. (That's what happens when you live here for a while.) Now I'm going to ride the Dipper again this weekend. It's a valuable and unique piece of America's past, and an icon that speaks to anyone on either side of America's cultural divide today. Doesn't matter if I'm seated next to anyone who doesn't share my worldview. When we ride the Big Dipper together, we are united. I don't know if the Big Dipper has been designated as a historic monument yet. It should be.

Awesome job, Steve (7 1/2 years ago). This the first version of the song I ever heard and I think I still prefer it over the studio version, although I do like the descending piano notes during the chorus on the studio version. Every time I hear the song, though, I picture your video (and hear the background sounds from the roller-coaster. Thanks again!

they built one of these at Geauga Lake in Ohio as well. from the video it looks to be the same roller coaster. I imagine it was the same design company. although, from the top you can't see much of anything in Geauga lake. I can't imagine where it would have to be situated in order to see an entire city. Must be a California thing.
@Ladybird4110 жыл бұрын
yes.. and it was my first coaster and my all time favorite wooden coaster and i miss it very very much. it's design was the same from what i can tell.

absolutely loved the big dipper at geauga lake.they later changed it to six flags then closed the doors. im still very upset that they closed the park down :(
@MrJest22 жыл бұрын
There were a few iterations of it built across the country. It is a Frederick Church design (of Prior and Church). You can indeed see - dimly - Monterey from across the bay if the fog isn't obscuring it. Which it usually is. It's not close; the Bay is pretty big - I'm not even sure I'd call it a "bay" in the traditional sense, although it's considered one, and it's a few miles distant. And of course it's not a big city to begin with, so you won't see much - just some lights maybe at dusk.

I've loved this song forever, and I realized it was about Santa Cruz, but never put together the Giant Dipper connection. Does anyone know if "the Cafe's inner steps" refers to Cafe Pergolessi, or if not, which one?
@Ezrax777 жыл бұрын
Its cafe zihno steps i think...not inner.
@MrJest22 жыл бұрын
It's a made-up cafe name, sort of based on one that existed in the old Pacific Garden Mall prior to the '89 quake. I can picture the steps in my mind, but it's long demolished and lost to time now... I don't remember the name, but I remember the place.
@TeoBosque9 ай бұрын
@@MrJest2 most definitely not a made up name. Cafezinho was located behind the original bookshop Santa Cruz and was destroyed during the earthquake. It was one of the more popular spots in Santa Cruz in the 80s.
