Nom de guerre is the French translation (and with slight variations, it’s the same in many Romance languages) of a military callsign - effectively, a pseudonym or a name you use in battle

When I solved 19 down, I thought of pinnies at once, and then saw how the cryptic worked. It is hard to explain why the correct answer pops into the head of experienced solvers, but that's how the elite get very fast times. It only happens to me every once in a while.

Is there a reason why you always go with 1 down first? (With grids like this one, I'd think that 1 across is better because it provides more checking initial letters?)

Yes, someone once suggested that the down clues may be easier if the setter had written the across clues first because they may spend less time or energy on the down ones. I have no idea if this is true
