99% of what I make is with the cheap Red Heart Super Saver. I dont care how tacky that seems to other people. I crochet to relax, have fun and make something cute. I wish I could afford very nice yarn for every project. But thats simply not where I am at in life. ❤ Youre so right.

As a vegetarian, I’ve decided that my morals mean if I can’t afford kindly sourced eggs from happy chickens, then I can’t afford eggs. But honestly, it’s a privilege to be able to do even just that. I would like to buy ALL organic, but I can’t afford that at all. To judge someone for not holding themselves to your own standards makes no sense. We all have our reasons.

I'm so glad my position is if people aren't paying my bills I truly don't care what they think about where I buy my yarn, or how much or little yarn I buy. Oh, I loved Crystal's yarn wall, I'm sorry she was bullied into taking it down! I happen to love high end yarn, so make a lot of socks (don't take much yarn) and I've steered people away from some cheaper brands kindly "you might want to look at yarn b instead of yarn a" knowing they are similar prices. But shouldn't we all be encouraging each other no matter what the craft level!

Very well said, Shannon. I have noticed the same “ trend” going on at crochet/knit sites. Nice reminder of the golden rule. What I always thought was ironic when I would see some of these shaming comments, is how it isn’t necessarily done to people who have artist studios, or a place where they do pottery, etc. Imagine a woodworker or sculptor in their shop/studio getting negative feedback because they have “too much wood or marble”. Let’s all be happy about the creativity and joy the respective craft brings.

People's attitude toward Hobby Lobby really upset me. Most of these people who won't shop there are people who want their particular situation accepted everywhere and Hobby Lobby doesn't accept their position. Why can't they accept HL's right to express their beliefs and standards the same way they want others to accept theirs. The yarn stash. I fell for that shaming and de-stashed most of my yarn. I felt very deprived and restlessly unhappy about it. The other thing was the quality of yarn = so I went to those regional yarn convention things and bought a LOT of expensive hand-dyed, special animal fibers - think yak. Most of it is still living in my closet. I don't DO that type of project. I don't enjoy it. So I will slowly rebuild my stash with the type of yarn I actually use doing the types of projects I enjoy making without guilt or pressure to "improve" my habits.

The only place where I can buy yarn is Walmart. There are no Hobby Lobby's, Michael's, or Joann's here, and I don't trust websites. I prefer to be able to touch the yarn to decide if it's the appropriate one for whatever I'm making. I usually use acrylic like Super Saver because most of what I make is stuff that will definitely need to be placed in the washing machine at one point. I also use cotton for kitchen and bathroom things. I've never used any ✨️fancy✨️ yarn because: 1) I can't afford it 2) The way my life is, I don't have either the time or inclination to have something that specifically needs to be dry-cleaned because otherwise, it will get ruined if one drop of water touches it. It's way too warm where I live for wool and alpaca anyway. I'm okay with my $2 cotton yarn, thank you ❤

If I lived close enough to Hobby lobby, I would be shopping there. I just heard about a restaurant that had a sign their political views and basically said, if you don’t agree with them, don’t come in, so guess what? People did not come in. Apparently, most of their customers did not share their political views so when they said they don’t want those customers there, they stopped coming. The owner then complained about the people he didn’t want in his restaurant because they were coming into his restaurant.

There is a common saying that there is no ethical consumption under late stage capitalism. What that means is that every purchase we make, if we trace it back far enough, has some negative impact on something. Even if it's made of biodegradable materials, the process of harvesting and processing the materials might have a negative impact on the environment or the people who do the work. Shaming on the individual level does very little to actually solve the problem.
@spookyvondoom4624

Now that being said, I prefer not to shop at Hobby Lobby and I prefer not to eat at Chick-fil-A. At the end of the day, if I'm hungry, and Chick-fil-A is the only option, I'm not going to starve. Jo-Ann is 30 minutes away, and the selection at Michael's is terrible. Sometimes I stop at Hobby Lobby, and their yarn is pretty nice. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I'm not going to stop them from smuggling.
@belantww
@belantww 7 ай бұрын
It works both ways. I don’t shop at Hobby Lobby for the reasons you mentioned and was told off on a message board for that. I don’t care where people choose to shop. Why do people care where I choose to shop? In this particular case, it wasn’t yarn shaming. All I said on the message board was, “I don’t shop there,” and I got hit with assumptions about my political affiliations. It’s not always about the yarn.

Hi Shannon, Your channel came over my feed. I love seeing this being addressed. I live in rural Iowa, we don’t have a local yarn shop, so me, I buy big box acrylic yarn. And I AM proud to say I have received First Place and Best of Show in our county fair using this yarn, one was a king sized blanket in a design I charted out by pencil, eraser, and graph paper. I have also been judged by my friends on yarn choice, I just reply “ well my word, you must have went right up to heaven and knocked Jesus off his thrown “ and I DO say that, it shuts them up right out of the gate.( farming talk 😉) we went on a small vacation two years ago to a city that had a local yarn store, oh the yarns were so beautiful and I purchased ONE skein of alpaca yarn, ouch, that hit my budget money, you know that was 3 years ago and I still haven’t used it. Just having it is nice. But girl I am happy people can afford it and use it, hey what ever makes you happy, then I am happy for you. And Hobby Lobby having issues that people don’t like, ok just don’t go there then. I would never eat raw meat and you don’t see me in a sushi bar 😂, but hip hip hooray for those who do. I say be humble and true to yourself. Nice channel I subscribed

i keep watching their sales! I think the things I am attracted to are kind of expensive lol!!! But in all seriousness, I do think we take for granted how easy it is for us to get yarn, and how much we can get for the price! I feel like we are pretty spoiled when it comes to how much yarn we get in a skein! I have been trying more Drops yarn that I've ordered from Wool Warehouse in the UK. I've liked it all so far, it been good quality, low prices and the shipping was pretty cheap too! But the skeins are so tiny compared to what we have in all the stores here....Thanks for adding your perspective, I appreciate it!

Amen to every single point you made! People need to stay in their lane and mind their own business. It’s been a blessing to have a decent stash when one of my adult children requests something and I have the yarn on hand. We live an hour away from any box store or LYS. It is very upsetting that BOD was shamed to the point she felt she needed to purge due to others jealousy or sense of entitlement. I have fallen in love with natural fibers and may have $45 hanks. I also have HL crafters secret iykyk lol. They all have a place in my stash and project/gift plans. Your compassion is refreshing. Wow, craft and yarn shaming. I guess since I know very few people who actually craft or crochet I have never heard of this. KZbin is the worst for the bad stuff. Crafters should be more careful of who they watch, and maybe don't read the comments if they are bad.

👏👏👏 Absolutely! We are all in different places with making things and we should all just enjoy our craft and mind our own business! Lol Thanks so much for the shout out. I did have a comment saying they were unsubscribing because I was "supporting Temu" with that video. People have just decided that everything is political anymore and we don't think about the individual and why they are purchasing what they do. Theres entirely too much shame going around. I do this hobby because it makes me happy, not because I'm choosing what other believe are ethical sources in their mind. So this was very spot on :)

Also you're totally right about it being a privilege, high I think is why most of the shaming does come from people who live near big cities - they have a very unrealistic view of what is available to people in other places.

Every time a celebrity or politician or whatever starts talking about how we should live/work/eat/purchase it becomes obvious that they’ve never spent more than a few hours where I live! 😂 They might have stopped in Des Moines for an event but that’s hardly a true Iowa experience!!!

I'm very sorry people unsubscribed for something like that. The one point I disagree with is people's views on ethical. With ethics it's not really political it's how people and resources are being treated. Ethics means right vs wrong. Where opinions are emotion based. Some things are just right or just wrong. When an organization like the UN says something is unethical it's usually because of the welfare of people. Putting people in unsafe conditions should be a concern to everyone because it can happen to anyone.

I appreciate how thoughtful and kind this video is, and I am on board with what you're saying to a point. You're right that I don't think shaming people is a good idea, and there are legitimate reasons to shop in certain ways, and I think talking to people about why you are personally against shopping in particular ways, and understanding when they disagree with your reasoning, is much better than just telling them they're bad because there are things they might not know/agree with. However, using the example of Temu that you brought up, their parent company has been proven to use slave labor. I know shopping is complicated and there's no way to be 100% ethical all the time, but if you know you are supporting slavery with that purchase and you do it anyway...."that's the only way I can afford x fiber" is not an excuse. I know this is an extreme example and most things are not such a hard line in the sand, but I also don't think (which I know is not what you were trying to do here) saying there are never reasons to go "yeah if you're ethically okay with that, I'm not okay with you" is a reasonable stance either. Kindness, listening, and education are always what should come first, but there are things that cross a line.

Hi Sarah Jo! Thank you for taking time and responding with such a well thought out response! I definitely agree with you, and I fear that many or most of the inexpensive products we purchase are probably from sources we’d be shocked about if we really investigated more. I probably oversimplified what I was trying to express, but I feel as thought you understood you me, so thank you. I guess I was feeling is that people don’t think twice about ordering the same things (from the same wholesale) off of Amazon and don’t realize what’s they’re ordering. Again, thank you for adding your voice to the discussion 🤗

Donna here, I live in N. Louisiana where there are 3 places to get yarn. Hobby Lobby, Micheals and Walmart. That's it. The closest LYS to me is 5 hours away. (N.O.) The problem for me shopping on line is I want to FEEL the yarn. I don't buy clothes on line for this reason. I watch some channels that say certain yarns are soo soft, so I go to the store and pick it up, and its not. I am also old enough that I don't give a rats tail about what people think of me or how I do things. Being on a tight budget is another issue. For the past 3 years I have bought yarn one time a year at the clearance sales at Hobby Lobby and Micheals. (I don't bother with Wally world since they have next to no yarn at my store, even before the pandemic) If they don\t have what I want, I don't get it. I have been seeing A LOT of shaming all across the KZbin verse. Some people think that if they make others look bad it makes themselves look better. Clearly that is not the case.

Beautifully said!! Most of my yarn I get for free, things other people don't have a need for anymore and it's so fun trying out new yarns and seeing what I can make with what I have. I have some handyed yarns I have purchased in the past or as wedding anniversary presents... but yarn is yarn for me. I completely agree that privilege is being able to choose and maybe not everyone realises that they see the world through a privileged view. Its never nice to make a person feel lesser then someone else, its "polite" bullying I guess. My heart broke when I heard Crystal talk about her yarn room. ❤

It's a choice what some choose to purchase. I had an overabundance of yarn, but I was brought up in another generation. I called around and ended up giving it to my local library, because they a crochet and knit group that is learning the skill. I just watch KZbin crochet channels to get inspired to create. People just need to know that if they don't have anything good to say, then do say anything. Shaming is just a nicer word than humiliate. I am not subscribed, but your channel was recommended to me.

I go to Michael’s and Joann’s when there are sales because I usually only buy discounted yarn. Having a religion and certain political ideas doesn't always mean it reflects on how they do business. I don't care about the owners of the store's religion or political beliefs as long as they keep it separate from the business. The people going around making hay over silly things are just unhappy people. I don't want to see anybody unhappy. There's always an underlying reason why people are unhappy But where I draw the line is them taking it out on other people. Especially the crafting crowd just trying to teach you something. I never understood the craft/yarn shaming. I shop all 3 major craft store (Hobby Lobby, JoAnns and Michaels) because we don't have an LYS in my town. I can't shop Wal-mart because I get ill whenever I set foot in there. I have a ton of yarn (my bedroom has about 1k skeins, guest room has around 60 and my closet has about 500) I caught lots of sales and now I just shop my stash for projects. I'm happy to learn things so I can make more informed choices, but I do not allow people to shame me anymore. I personally won't buy off of Temu or Amazon for my own reasons, but if someone else wants to, it's not my right to tell them why they shouldn't. I would love to crochet with silks and wools, but they're just too much money. Today's acrylics are light years ahead of what we had in the 1970s, and they're reasonably priced. Many of them are really quite nice, too. Plus--wash and wear! I buy what appeals to my eye and feels good in my hand (and doesn't break the bank, lol).

Ability can be a big factor too - if you’re homebound due to illness or mobility concerns online ordering might be the only viable option for any shopping, yarn included! ☺️ or sensory issues… itchy wool? No thank you! 😅 I’m very lucky where I live there’s a huge annual used yarn sale for charity with super low prices. Without that I’d never have the yarn I do, and would feel very limited in my opportunities to try out new techniques and projects. I think if you know someone has certain values and they’re shopping somewhere in ignorance of something they’d disagree with it’s worth mentioning gently since they might like to know, but a lot of people must shop contrary to their values for loads of reasons. I think there are better more powerful ways to advocate for positive change in the world than pestering every individual to become a hyper-vigilant perfectionist who is ashamed and flummoxed by every daily decision they make. It becomes exhausting.

I am a horrible yarn snob now that I am an old lady. There were years I could only afford Woolworths yarn. I love what everyone makes. It takes a lot to actually finish a WIP. I choose not to shop at certain stores, and that is fine. I am not going to judge anyone. A friend of mine used to make these beautiful shawls, and she could make them fast. She could only afford walmart yarn. My crocheting brings me joy, and that is all that matters. I make baby items in caron simply soft. Why? It's durable,inexpensive, super soft for babies and has awesome colors. I also have custom make yarn from the UK that I make shawls with there is no wrong way.

I understand not everyone has access to the internet, but some catalog companies allow you to order over the phone. I don't know if it's possible to buy strictly "non-China" anymore. I don't buy from Temu because I read they treat the company/manufacturer unjustly. They have turned the tables. I think some people are jealous that make comments about someone else's yarn stash. I think a few may need some mental help for uncontrollable buying. Our society has definitely taught people to be consumer focused. I have also seen this in other crafts too, not just the yarn community.

In a world of fast fashion and single use clothing, fiber crafts can’t afford to shame and shun fellow crafters. We will lose making for the sake of active and daily wear/use. We are losing crafters to the shame and judgement. Mind your own business and make what you make! You can offer constructive suggestions based on knowledge and experience, like don’t use scratchy fiber for babies or folk with sensitive skin, or donation usually ask for fibers with less restrictive washing needs.
