@@stoicoutrider2788 I just did laminate flooring for the first time ever yesterday. Now will disassemble it and retry using the tips in this video lol. That sucks. The boards just wouldn't click together. I had to smash them in. I think that is because of misalignment somewhere at the beginning. First rows are definitely the most difficult. Especially if your walls are crooked.

Another good tip when installing is to have multiple boxes opened up because each piece in a single box usually has the same wood grain pattern so if you rotate them out you won’t have any similar grain pieces side by side. Great video though! I’m doing this in my kitchen and dining room soon and I’m really excited to see how it turns out

I appreciate the fact that you showed the cutting errors you made. I did a floor like this and made many of the same mistakes. It's amazing how easy it is to "chump" a cut and have to use another board. But if you are honest about this it will help others not feel bad when they make the inevitable mistakes that come with putting in this type of floor. It's really just a part of doing a job like this. Thanks again for a great video.

Thanks . I started a jab and i made a huge mess . Im talking massive . I slowely became more and more frustrated as i made more and more mistakes . I kept going thinking this will be ok if i keep going . Nope it got frankly ridiculous and i to this day cant remember what happened but i had a break down and smashed the whole house up with a hammer and various other objects . I was later told i tied a rope to the 4x4 and a towing rope to the window frames ripping them from the house . Part of the roof caved through the house and thats apparently when i set it all on fire and took off in the jeep crashing it into a local DIY store and was arrested after a nasty stand off with a chain saw in the garden department . I did see the cctv and it was me but i still feel the tazor was extreamly unfair and after being shot in the testicles and carted off to a police station they did take me for medical help . I was sectioned for a few months which became a year and then 10 and now 24 years later they said i was no longer a danger to people . I am now confident to give it another go now because your video was so good i feel its ore than possible. Also apparently it wasn't the flooring that set me off . The doctors said it could have been anything . Any way thanks for the video tale care

As a flooring installer. I am impressed of a homeowner installing! Very easy over flat cement. When you go over underpayment, there can be ridges you have to sand down in the subfloor to make it smooth! As a company we take the base boards off and reinstall them. First time doing it is not easy. But my 10 years of doing it you get good at it and is easy. But very impressed! Nice work.

I was actually wondering if the expansion gap is too big if it's done with baseboards on. Or does that not matter? If you do it with the baseboards off, do you use the same spacing he used or doe sit have to be bigger? since his gap was baseboard + spacer? Thanks!

The reason why this channel is so good is because this guy makes mistakes and documents it. Every other video is a "PERFECT" Install, which is rarely true for a DIY'er. I think that's why this is such a good channel. It's pretty obvious he isn't a professional, but a regular guy trying to do good work and save us money. Thanks for doing these videos and I really admire your style and honesty. I think it's obvious that if we're diy'ing ourselves, things won't go perfect, but that's the point. Thanks

Good video, consider precutting two sets of starters. One set at 16" spacing and another at 12" this will give you a better stagger without lining up seems every two or three rows.Also you can eliminate the need for a puller by leaving room for pry bar it will pop in much easier without risk of marring your butt seams.

Myself I always remove the base trim. Toe nail screws down as temporary stops, so you will have a more stable stop as you start the first rows since you will hammering towards it! After install of flooring Screws are removed and base re installed on top of flooring. I do this because if you don't your base trim becomes shorter and looks cheap! If you think of it, drywall does not touch the floor, so there's a 1/2" gap. Then you have the base trim, that's another 3/4" gap that's a 1 1/4" gap total!! When only 1/4" is required for laminate!! Also the very first thing you must do and its the most important and was left out of this video is is calculate the rip measurement for your beginning run and ending run. The last thing you want is a 1" strip ending your last floor run!!

The only way to never make a mistake is to never do anything. A few suggestions that I found helpful. My laminate flooring had the pad attached so when I cut it with a jigsaw I had to cut it with the good side up. I purchased reverse tooth blades so it would cut on the downstroke and not the upstroke this left a very clean cut on the good side. I used this in the kitchen and bathroom and where there was a possibility of water damage I glued the joints together. On very long runs the material would not stay together when I lifted the board up so I used small pieces of duct tape to hold the boards together. If you have an area that you cannot snap together because you cannot lift the board up to insert it just shave a little of the tongue side off with a good wood chisel then glue the joint together. I did my floor about 15 years ago and it still looks great however it doesn't get a lot of wear and I don't have any pets.

Good video. Two tools I highly suggest for those who dont have the tool setup like you do. One is a heavy duty scraper. Seems like overkill or expensive ($20-$25) but I has been worth it. I found that using it with quick thrusts will cut right through those tack strip nails that just won't come out. Especially the ones in concrete. The other tool is an oscillating tool (I use a Ridgid cordless). You will be so glad you spent the money.

Plenty of uses for old carpeting. Put a piece under your car (w/ a sheet of plastic underneath) to catch oil/fluid drips. Lay a piece in front of your workbench to help your feet. Line your car trunk. Pickup bed, too. If it gets rained on, so be it: it's already dump fodder. Leave it at the dump when you make a dump run.

I've done quite a few floors over the years. I will be replacing the laminate in three rooms because we had 2 1/2 inches throughout the house due to Hurricane Ian. Now the first thing I do whenever I put laminate down is remove the baseboards. Yes, it's extra work but makes life easier overall. In my case now, I am replacing the 3 1/4 baseboards with 3/4 by 5 inches. I could put 1/4 round on top but I'm not. Pergo is a good laminate and that is what I use 90% of the time.

I literally just did this with my two bedrooms. Ripped out all the carpets and put in laminate flooring. I don't have all the fancy tools - only used a jigsaw. My brother does have a circular saw but I was a bit scared to use it as I've never done this before. The flooring is quite easy to install but the hard bit was using the jigsaw to cut around the inbuilt cupboards/wardrobes in both rooms. There's a trick to using a jigsaw to cut U shapes and my brother ended up doing it for me. My "closet" was quite complicated to go around.... but in the end we figured it out!

Been doing flooring for quite a few years now. We never use those fancy spacers. No room is square so we just eyeball it pick a wall (preferably and exterior wall) and square it. Also a floor chopper will make your life sooooo much easier instead of back and forth trips to the chop saw all day. I also admit I cringed when he used WHITE quarter round for that door transition, but for a DIY not bad.

A floor chopper is just a cutting blade much like a big paper cutter. Mark the piece of flooring, insert, and use the handle to chop the flooring. No power. No cords. Light weight. Just carry it with you as u work. U can also score and snap with a blade and straight edge. Yes u can start under the base board as long as there's still a quarter inch gap

Great video! Excatly how it should be, any job can throw trial and error. A good honest video showing the errors he made along the way, even professionals had to start out at some point. The end result looks perfect 👌, that's all that matters. Even with mistakes with laminated flooring & real wood planks, alot of the time you'll find that it can be used elsewhere in the project any way. So not to worry on wasting the boards. I've just invested in a contour gauge for my current/future flooring projects and it makes life a whole lot easier cutting around akward shapes and pipework. Take your time, makes mistakes and seek ways to rectify and learn from them, Were only human! You'll eventually see your efforts pay off. Your not learning if your not having the odd mistake or two. Credit where credits due, a job well done.

Nicely done Johnny. Looks like a nice system with the underlayment. The quarter round you referred to is typically called “base shoe”. It has a tall and a narrow side and is installed with the tall edge up as you did. Typical quarter round is symmetrical. Most home centers sell both and they can be easily confused.

Why do DIY videos always look so easy? I see myself in the midst of a project like this then making 25 trips to HD looking for orange aproned workers and then returning home to realize I need one more thing. In the meantime, I slump on the floor with a good sandwich and imagine it all looking perfect.

I’ve never seen it done this way before. I’ve been installing floors for almost 6 years now and I connect the laminate with the width side first, then use a rubber mallet to hit it in length-wise. Your method takes 10x longer. The only benefit with your method is ensuring none of the locks break due to the hitting of the mallet as stated in my method.

Use a round pointed shovel to remove tack strips. I did a huge master bedroom in about 15 minutes with no damage to the base boards.
@shawneliason790

To remove tack strips . Just use a shovel.. makes it easy. You'll usually get all the strips up in one piece including the nails. Works on concrete and wood subfloors. You just slide the shovel tip from a foot or so back and it'll wedge between the strip and floor. Then just push down on the handle. Sorta like removing roofing.

Looks great! Hopefully I can spark enough people's experience and wisdom to chime in on what will undoubtedly be some ignorant questions. Question 1) What are the benefits of hardwood vs laminate flooring? Question 2) What is holding the laminate floor in place? Will is shift or slide if kids are running on it and stopping on a dime to change direction? Question 3) How well does the underlayment help with insulating? I have sections in my home that are tile directly above the crawlspace where there is no insulation and it is FREEZING! I need to figure out if I should also think about insulating the floor from underneath. Thanks for the video...it brings on confidence that the first room we do will likely be laminate where there is currently tile.
@montem9526
@montem9526 2 жыл бұрын
Hardwood is definitely better as far as a nicer finished floor however it will definitely cost way more. Nothing really holds it in place other than trim around the edges but chances are it will not move around a whole lot because they are all locked together . As for insulation the underlayment may stop air flow but it won't insulate very much. You are better off spray foaming the crawlspace

My dad installs hardwood and i help him out...easier to connect the boards together width wise, then after that you just lift up one side and tap it back legth wise, some wood dont even need a hammer you can pull em back and theyll click in.

I understand, that you do it like it's done in the vid, when you're working alone because (depending on the width of the room) it's difficult to lift up the whole row by yourself. However, working together, the way you described it, is easier.

@@juanbadillo1373 ...instead of tapping the installed piece directly, use a scrap piece that you can temporarily 'lock' in and use the hammer on the outside edge of the scrap piece to distribute the force evenly along the installed board edge.

Been a building contractor for years. We are none of us perfect! Good to see someone show the regular people how easy some of this is if they just think and have a little ability and tools at hand. You have no idea how much of this I have removed where no underlay was placed. :( Its good to see someone not ashamed of the occasional stuff up at work. We all do it when minds are on other things. A good tradey bounces back with a quick fix, rather than yell about it. Good vid, bro!

@@craftedworkshop hi there, I'm a widow and live alone. I plan on redoing my floors. I've got nothing but time to do this yet I don't have a ton of tools. I don't have table saw, I think that's what you call it. But I do have hacksaws and jigsaw. Should I still do this project with only a hacksaw and or jigsaw? How would I remove Ed's when I need to with either a hex or jigsaw?
