Excellent! You make it look effortless! I used to make picture frames with a friend 20 years ago using a motorized chop saw. Now, I'd like to learn how to use hand tools. You're my new wood working teacher. I'll be in the shop to buy plans soon 😊

A lot more efficient than me. One tip if I may be so bold - when ripping pieces down in the vice, put some scrap plywood behind the piece on the bench. That way, when your saw bottoms out on the scrap, it simply slides away telling you you are ready to move the piece up in the vice and this protects your bench top.

When you use the shooting board for the miters, how do you ensure you are ending up with equal length pieces? I'd imagine it goes something like.. get the miters shaped nice, test fit, then compare length, then remove from the longer piece as needed. I've never used hand tools before but considering building a shooting board since it looks like the accuracy is superior for versus a miter gauge on a table saw.

I may have cackled a little at "the square is worthless." Reminds me of when I go to hang a bunch of pictures up only to discover that the wall I'm trying to hang them on isn't flat either. Kind of makes you question all the work you put into the frame.

Very nice, Frank! Frames came out very nice. Do the spring clamps leave indents in the wood?
@FranksWorkbench
@FranksWorkbench 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they do! I either consider it a tool mark and don't worry about it or sometimes will cut the spline so that it erases the two indents.

They're solid planes, just needed new blades. I couldn't get the stock blades very sharp - edges kept crumbling. If I were to do it all over again id probably go LN, but the WR work great.

The thing I enjoy most here is all the actual handwork. Given the best machines, a full setup workshop quite allot people can get stuff done. And yet you still see them not utilize techniques that make work easier. I was building furniture 15 years ago, not in US, in a full stocked workshop. Many people can't imagine how annoying it is knowing how to build everything... but missing machines you used to work with. And then watch KZbinrs not utilizing important tricks. Right here one can see how you can get stuff done without all the modern machine-fluff! And you can learn a thing or two about workshop techniques.

@FranksWorkbench
@FranksWorkbench 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! To be honest there was no reasoning behind it, I didn't even think about it, I just grabbed the DeWalt. Could have used a hand drill though! The dowels I just hammer through a dowel plate. I save tenon cheek offcuts, they are the perfect thickness for making little dowels like these

As an ex-picture framer I have one comment but it's not to you, it's to my old boss: SEE, LOOK YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN MOLDING!!. So thanks. As an Australian I have one comment: OMG you cut up a wide plank of walnut to make one little frame!? (That would cost more than $100 per meter here ). You guys don't know how lucky you are in America with the timbers you have available, so jealous.
