I scanned all of my scrapbook pages and put into a folder on my comp, then I made copies, put onto memory sticks and gave them to relevant family members 😁

It’s also ok to keep things you love, it’s your life story & your kids may find comfort in looking back through the scrapbooks one day 🥰 It’s not a burden if they know you don’t expect them to take ownership of them x

Oh this is so hard … 😮😢 I’m with you … I think you keep the pages that have the memories Some may not as precious since you did it as a business but some are priceless memories that hopefully your kids will enjoy one day Yes that’s the question all the time with why do we document our days … Mostly for my enjoyment I know …. Because the shelves of scrapbooks and journals is never gonna be something my children will want … but what about your great grandchildren …. Won’t they enjoy seeing if some of the life moments ?

We had the same experience of needing to purge the clutter before our move across the country to Florida. It felt heartbreaking at the time, but it was liberating in the end. Twenty years in one home with years of accumulated memorabilia and loads of stuff from the kids who are now grown. They'd move out to school, leave things behind, come back for a while then finally leave the nest and leave more things behind! It's very expensive to move that distance so we had to purge quite a bit. There were many things I kept, they were just too precious and I took photos of things I was on the fence about. While I was dealing with it all a friend told me 'the memories are not living in those things, the memories are in your heart'. That helped me a lot. Best of luck with everything!

You could scan in all of your Disney memories and then make slideshows/videos and share with all the family. Saves space and will last forever.

I LOVE decluttering - and having moved 10 + times in the last 10 years I really don't hold on to much. I'm finally moving in with my partner when my house sells so I am enjoying decluttering everything 'do i love it? will i use it? do i need it? does it have sentimental value and will I be sad if I don't have it to look back on?' its a good way to be - be ruthless. A good thing with journaling/scrapbooking is we keep memorabilia and photos in a physical form to look back on rather than keeping 'junk' in a box never to be seen again. :)

You could keep your scrap books in some lidded tubs in the corner of your garage (or wherever you want) one pile up to the ceiling if need be. They'd be amazing to look back on in the future. Even in 100 years! You said you got given loads of photos and you don't know what to do with them and don't want to burden your own kids, but you don't have to hand them down, but they might want to pick and choose some in the future anyway. Whatever you do, don't rush the decisions ❤️

I actually enjoy decluttering, I craft, and you could absolutely turn the scrap pages into smaller journal pages and make a3 journals. It would be a fun craft project. Even if you do move with them as they are, it will be a project.. eventually, it would get done.

I used to have bags of memorabilia from trips like you but got rid of them a few years back when I realized I'd never looked at them since the trips. A few trips I did make smashbooks with all the stuff just after the trips or even during the trips. Scanning is my best friend now or taking photos of physical items that way the memory is preserved with the clutter. I'm lucky my hubby had a work scanner than I've been able to borrow and I'm scanning all my scrapbooks and those I made for my kids (who have no interest in them).I must have had at least 40 big full 12x12 albums !! Luckily I changed to photobooks about 10 years ago :-)

I can understand your struggle, it’s hard. For the memorabilia: what about some clear plastic totes that can stack? You can put a trip or two in each and label them. As for the scrapbooks, I wouldn’t get rid of them but maybe go through and pull out the layouts that aren’t full of memories (ones that were for challenges, using the latest paper, etc)? Good luck! 😊

Oh Lisa! Watching you reminds me of myself when I try to declutter. I get caught up on all the sentimental stuff and don’t want to get rid of it. I’ve lived in my house for 43 yrs! And I have trouble getting rid of things. So can you imagine how much stuff I’ve accumulated?! I’ve got to downsize and move and I don’t want to pay to move all of this, not do I want to leave this all for my daughter to go thru when I’m gone. (Have you ever read the book Swedish Death cleaning?) keep making these decluttering videos. It’s inspirational!

I'm very sentimental and I would be keeping all the pictures, scrapbook layouts, books, cards, etc. I would throw out old receipts, itineraries and things like that. I would thin out scrapbook supplies that you've had for ages and never used and only kept because "I might use this someday" and give those to charity. I'm sure you have quite a bit (like ALL of us). You say you don't want to burden your kids but I bet that once you're gone, they will cherish looking thru all the scrapbooks, pictures, cards, etc that you kept knowing how much those things meant to you and the time you put into creating them because of the love you have for your family. They most likely will not keep it all, but it will warm their hearts looking thru it all before they get rid of it. They may even keep some of their favorites.

I haven't read all the comments, but I just wanted to say that I follow a lady on you tube who used to scrapbook and she is downsizing so she is scanning all of her scrapbook layouts (she has so many) and is just keeping the digital versions. I hope you keep that photo of yourself as a child. I think your kids will love that when they are older. (I wish I had pics of my mum as a child, but they were all thrown out in a move accidentally)

OMG you really do keep a lot of stuff from trips. The only things I can’t chuck away are old photos and we have loads of photo albums. If I had printed all the photos I have taken since 2007 we would need a new house!! I am ruthless now when it comes to cards and never keep them although I have kept the first shoes of both my kids

I really felt for you. It’s so hard parting with those precious memories. I also have trip bags of collected bits and pieces - maps are a favourite! But I now say to myself if I’ve not done something with it after 4 years then it gets binned. I like creating box frames for my trips but haven’t done one for several years. Also, if you found things that you had forgotten you had then you don’t need them so get rid of them. If your scrapbooks give you joy, keep them or just keep your favourite pages. Let your children decide what to do with them when you’re gone. I bet they will keep some of them, what lovely memories to have of their mum and how she loved them so much. By the way Lisa, you have inspired me to scrapbook. I’ve just found out I’m to be a grandma so what better way to document this wonderful time of my life x

Think of it this way.. so much of this stuff you forgot about until you opened the box/bag.. do you need ‘things’ to have memories, what if it was all taken away from you tomorrow, it’s just things, you still have your memories. Read up on the Swedish Death Cleaning, don’t leave your loved ones to sort out your memories and add to their burden.

I just finished this and loved it. Regarding your scrapbook pages, I think cutting out the bits that are important to you is a great idea. You really cleaned out loads, way to go! Today my Husband and I started a weekend long project of cleaning out our upstairs closet. Its progressive right now, tomorrow we empty the rest out, sweep it and then start putting stuff back inside. We took lots of breaks in between working, I keep reminding myself that when we are done and have everything all sorted, out it is going to feel amazing.

That nostalgia items struggle is REAL! I tend to be the historian of my friends and fam, so when we downsized by 90% out of the farm house and into the RV fulltime, the bulk of the items I decided to keep were albums, photos, memorabilia from years gone by. Precious stuff! I live in WA now, and that stuff is in storage in TN. I commend your efforts during this time of a gazillion decisions to make, and I’m cheering for y’all as you go. xoxo - Lindsey 💌

Keep what you want, they are your memories. Don’t think that you will be burdening the kids. My parents left a house full of stuff (5 skips we had!), yes we moaned but we also bonded through the experience. There were tonnes of photos/slides. We had a great time looking through them all and just keeping the ones we wanted. You could try removing the scrapbook pages from the albums and use treasury tags to keep them together as that will take up less space

You got rid of so much stuff! Well done 🤍 Going through things like scrapbooks is really hard because they are sentimental items (and I've read that you should go through those things after everything else in your house and leave it to last). I totally get where you are coming from but I think taking them apart and keeping them in smaller journals is the best way to go if you don't want to photograph them 💕

We are moving in two weeks time 😂 so I feel your pain in going through all the craft and work stuff! I’ve been putting off packing up my cabin 🙈 but I’m fast running out of time! Your video has given me a kick up the butt 😂 I hope the packing goes smoothly ❤ There’s something to be said about keeping the layouts and scrapbooks. If it weren’t for the journals and letters my mum kept from her parents I would know nothing about them. Sure I’d know the people my mum knew, but to read their life in their own words was so much more. They hold little treasures and snippets of a people I never got to meet. They are you in paper form and that’s something, even if there’s a lot of them 😂 that is worth holding onto ❤

Gosh you were adorable when you were little! Love a decluttering of your studio, it’s such a treasure trove! For photos, I have an aura frame. One frame and thousands of pictures. I was reluctant at first as I love holding and touching photos (is that weird?😂) but now I see them all daily which makes me smile daily 😊. Old family photo albums that have been passed down can be linked to a family tree on ancestry that you can pass down digitally. Your scrap books are so precious, you say you don’t want to burden your kids with it all but I’m so thankful my grandma burdened my mam with her stuff as I got to read all the letters friends and family wrote to my grandma over the years, it was such a beautiful insight into the early parts of her life. I will keep them forever! Vac-pac yours, don’t cut them up! You could put them in your new empty loft, your grandchildren may thank you. Just a few ideas to confuse you more 🫣 xx

If you don't have room for everything, you can rent a storage room that is weather controlled and waterproof. We have one this year since my policeman son moved into our basement (I'm glad he's there). We had to empty out a lot of the basement and put his apartment furniture there that didn't fit.

Could you take photos of your older scrapbook layouts then make them into a photo book? I know it won’t have the same feel as a journal or scrapbook album but they would be easier for your kids to store? The other option is to ask your children what they think, what layouts etc they would like to keep or say to them that when you are gone they are under no obligation to keep anything and they can cherry pick the layouts journals they want.

I just finished 2 months of Swedish death cleaning for my favorite charity’s annual mega sale. (A ton of scrapbooking as I’ve switched to card making) Keep the scrapbooks - you aren’t ready yet, and you’re allowed to keep the things you love! You’re young and don’t have to be ruthless with your personal items yet, lol, just toss the easy things like you did - hotel conformations and luggage tags. And your photo is precious! Your descendants won’t care about your Disney tickets, but they WILL love that photo of you! I think you should have it color corrected to last another 40 years.

I must be so unsentimental. I keep very little. I fully believe things are sent into your life to bring you joy for a while - but we end up with far too much in the modern world we live in. I said to my children a few weeks ago, the best indicator of if something is worth it is if you'd miss it if your house burnt down. I'm not a minimalist at all - but when I feel it getting too much I love a good clear out.

Great Job! Oh I ❤️ my scrapbook pages but yes I worry about burdening my kids with them. I would totally just keep favorites in a scrapbook book and Breakdown the others into junk journals. See if you can group them by subject and then trim away! I do photograph and then release somethings .. it’s hard but necessary I have been scanning the old pics from my childhood and sharing them with my siblings. As my mom has requested. She’s 81 and doesn’t want to deal with it. So in the future the old photo albums don’t become such a burden! Also, years ago we printed every photo on a roll. Those I’m reducing as well. It’s on going and I’m getting much better. Last week I did a huge week long declutter at home! We donated tons of stuff!

Lisa, I feel your pain! I'm trying to declutter my house - it's painfull, makes my head hurt, seems never ending and hurts my heart. But.....I know I'll get there. To help you - I would keep at least one magazine with your work in it - it's something to be proud of. As to the scrapbook pages...I think going through them and cutting down the ones you really want to keep is the way to go. I scrapbook in a completely different way to you - I have more photos on a page and the have nothing 3D, so they are thinner pages. But I too keep everything from a trip - but once I've scrapbooked/journaled if it isn't used - it's gone! x It's stressful moving - give yourself a pat on the back and just keep moving forward. xx

Lisa we feel equally sad about discarding our memory books. So we have digitised them onto a hard drive by taking a photograph of the pages we want to keep - this also works with receipts etc so we don't have to keep the actual paper as the often fade over time too.

The scrapbook layouts I had the same thing when I was scrap booking which I don't anymore but I know store the layouts in the 12x12 boxes and set myself a limit of 4 boxes I fitted a lot of layouts in contained spaces and also helped to keep the layouts I loved but got rid of the others. Before I took them apart I filmed each scrapbook and layout so I had a record of what they looked like in each album. It also means now I watch the videos more often as have them to watch when I want to look back best decision I made filming them but it was so hard but as was moving country had to limit myself to what was essential. But still have a lot of them just not in the big binders but in the 12x12 bins which took up less space

I commented before I finished watching the video and you said don't say photograph the scrapbooks because it is not the same. (Scanning is as bad as photographing). I like your idea to cut things down and make smaller journals with the things. Can I suggest one thing to you? Do what you want you want to do now - like, don't think about the kids and how they will deal with things after you're gone (I know that is not what Swedish death cleaning talks about). But you enjoy these things and you should have them to enjoy. And then you should give your kids written permission to get rid of anything after you are gone and not to feel bad about it so you feel good knowing that your children won't feel burdened. Well, that is what I would do if I was in your situation (and trust me, I know all about feeling guilt about wanting to throw out important things as I still have a heap of my mother's belongings that I have not been able to part with yet. So I have been making sure I tell my niece that she doesn't have to keep anything at all.)

About 10 years ago I had a massive sentimental declutter, I had kept every single card I’d ever been sent, all my old diary’s, letters and it got to the point where I just had nowhere else to store them so I went through it all card by card and filled 15 recycling bags. I now limit myself to keeping only a few very special cards a year and I take a picture of them all rather than saving them all, it’s the hardest type of decluttering though as you can’t sell or donate it, hope you are feeling ok about the decisions you made?
