So simple but so clever. Lifting the blade on the forward stroke is something that bigger machines do. Love it.

Love mine, had to remake the little stepping blades that provides the lifting action on the serrated steps.

These are great machines, always a true and straight cut. I prefer this over my Cratsman horizontal band saw of the same era.

Same, I’ve always had issues with the hydraulic feed on my old craftsman band saw. No matter how many times I’ve rebuilt it. 🤷♂️

Beautiful. The shop I worked in back in the late 1970's had one twice this size which I occasionally operated. I've been thinking of building my own or buying one like this. All the DIY machines that I see posted cut on the forward stroke and aren't lifting on the return stroke like the industrial ones. I've been trying to figure out how to get the arm to lift during each cycle. Haven't found any info yet.

Any idea of where to get a replacement ratchet block? Mine has stripped teeth and will not work properly. Would love to restore this
@janm23813 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid that I have no idea where you could get a replacement. All I can suggest is that you perhaps try filing the teeth or have a machine shop make a new one.

Jan, is it cutting only in the back stroke? I see there is some mechanism lifting the blade as it is pushed forward. I like the old Atlas tools. Have a bunch of lathes, still no power hacksaw.
@janm23818 жыл бұрын
Yes, the hacksaw only cuts on the backstroke. As you can see, the blade is pushed up when it moves forward, then drops and cuts as it is pulled back. In the video (around the 1 m;inute mark) you can see that there is a slightly curved bar with small teeth that two thin strips of metal grab. As the large gear is turned these two small palls move to alternating teeth in a ratcheting mechanism. One row of teeth enables the blade to be lifted. When that pall disengages, the other allows the blade to fall and make the next cut. Hard to explain; perhaps a little easier to understand by watching the video, though you can't see the cam that is causing the ratchet motion as it is hidden by the big wheel that is turning.

Yes, technically you are correct. To my IT person (who posted the video) backstroke is towards the back of the machine :)

what size blades does this take?

Which is the 'back' stroke and which is the 'forward' stroke here? Because I'm seeing the blade lift when going away from the motor.
@TheMetalButcher5 жыл бұрын
They cut towards the motor.

Is the flathead screw that holds the main drive gear on a backwards thread? Or no?

I'm sorry but we don't recall and, as we don't have the tool anymore, we can't check.

model please ???

This one is a Craftsman. We no longer have it so I can't check the model number, but it is equivalent to an Atlas 4350. Hope that helps.

Very nice. I like how it lifts the blade on the backstroke. I've been looking for something like this for a while, not too many out there.

TheOtherBill but this one is not so big , i work on a much bigger power saw which have proper coolant system and its heavy duty machine , one more thing it lifts the blade during forward stroke and it cuts during backward stroke!!
@BilalKhan-do9il6 жыл бұрын
Lite Roadie it lifts the blade during forward stroke , when blade moves away from motor its forward stroke!!

I just picked one up just like yours. What makes and allows the auto stop? How does it shut the motor off too. I need to build my table and want to do it right the first time. Any photos you can share would be awesome.
@dentonmyland73835 жыл бұрын
Sorry to be slow responding but I no longer have the machine so had to dig through some old pictures to see if I had one of the mechanism. I'm not sure how to attach a picture to this reply, so I've answered your question on my facebook page instead. You can find it at facebook.com/pg/MylandCustom/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1235617583141168 Hope that helps.
