Your suppose to cut a vent at the top within the lid so the candle doesnt burn out or soot up the top. Helpful hint. Just a small V hole would suffice. Where you cut the v notch to align the lid is what I use for my vent. To keep the notch there still i just cut the V in half so the notch is still there to align the lid.

if you cut the opening in the bottom instead of the top, they're easier to light (you just set the pumpkin on top of the candle instead of having to either find a lighter/match long enough to reach or burning your hand trying to put the candle in) and they last a little bit longer before caving in (there's a whole long math reason but i'm bad at math [much less explaining it] and it boils down to: taking the top off of an arch makes it unstable). you can also try sprinkling a little bit of pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon at the top of the pumpkin (whether you cut from the top or bottom) so that when you light it, it smells like pie! also if you live in an area with wildlife that might munch on your pumpkin, wash it with vinegar instead of bleach, so the wildlife isn't hurt! (i know it's frustrating when they eat it and you want to dissuade them from eating it, they're not very likely to eat something that smells like bleach or vinegar. but just in case they do, they're just animals following instinct and don't deserve to be hurt for that)

Thank you. I wouldn't use bleach as we feed ours to our livestock the day after Halloween and I would never give our animals bleach. We also have enough farms that our farmers will go around town and pick up all used pumpkins people are getting rid of to feed their animals instead of sending them to the dump. Chickens, goats, and even horses like pumpkins!
@NotJessH12 күн бұрын
@@blackdandelion5549 I’ve had horses all my life and never thought to give them pumpkin! I accidentally dropped my daughter’s Jack-o-lantern and it broke into pieces so we just walked over and gave each horse a piece and yup! They approve! 😂 I only washed them with the hose, just plain water since tomorrow is Halloween and I didn’t expect them to last long after carving sine we just got around to it today.

lol same as I’ve been doing it for years, bar the saw. I found a flexible thin kitchen knife was great; I’d like a new one though. Baking parchment paper is great for using as tracing paper - you can rub pencil on the rear and draw over it, whilst on the pumpkin; not being afraid to puncture it in key places like dots. The 3D effect is key in making it stand out. You do your best on the face, then can scoop out the inner side with a small tea spoon to get it perfect.

Last night I began a complicated design. I didn’t hollow the pumpkin out first. I used a Pilot G-2 Red Pen 🖊️ to perfect the image alignment & proportions to the natural features of the pumpkin first. The gently pressed Red Pen is nice because a damp paper towel erases any mistakes. I drew the image from the Top down left over to the right exterior in final with my right hand. After that, being aware of my hand palm with finger positioning, I took a HUSKY box cutter to trace etch the image into the pumpkin’s surface above 1/8th - 1/4” subsurface depth. Using my right hand I worked the image with the box cutter from the top down the right side to the bottom working through to finish my final etching towards the bottom left (box cutter reverse from pen imprint due to ink & smear); also I purposefully rotated the uncored pumpkin upwards towards the ceiling because the pumpkins face will bleed & the positive to this is that any color marks left behind by the Red Pen are easily wiped away invisible 🫥. The face is etched with perfect symmetry onto the contours of the pumpkins perfectly. All that’s left to do is core out, finish the carving through & bake the pumpkin seeds 👍🏻. I’ve carved a lot of pumpkins in my life & this was my first time using the Red Pen & Husky box cutter. I’m beyond impressed with how exact I’ve been able to position this complex image design so perfectly. Thanks for the tip on extracting the small cuts first, this will save me tension 👍🏻

I can't disinfect as I feed mine to our farm animals the day after Halloween. We always carve within 48 hours of Halloween for this reason. I also like large animal size scalpel blades like a sz 20 for carving or easily cutting away the tissue as it's very clean and precise cuts, but is significantly larger then a regular scalpel blade or most exacto blades you get. - tips from a farmer. Ugly pumpkins can also be used in very creative ways so don't hate on those bumps, weird growths, and funny shapes too much. . . .they can make amazing art.
