In the seventies, I was traveling with my family around the country. At one camp site next to ours was a young man sleeping on the picnic table in an army sleeping bag. What interested me was the red Sportster he was riding. My folks invited him to have breakfast with us. We loved watching Bronson on TV, so we asked if he had seen the show. He told us he had just returned from a tour in Vietnam a few days before. He said he had planned to buy a motorcycle and roam around the country if he made it back! He said since he started, everyone asked him if he was Bronson! That's when he realized someone had stolen his idea! It was a cold morning and he was having a hard time kick starting the Harley. So I helped him bump start. He tied on his sleeping bag, shook my hand, and disappeared over the next rise!

It's hard to believe TCB was only one season. I loved that show as a 13 year old boy. When I was 21 I bought a new Kawasaki KZ400 and left Florida bound for Reno where my two sisters lived. Instead of a direct route, I took I10 to California, I5 to Sacramento, then I80 to Reno. Got a job at a truckstop and stayed till fall then headed back to Florida. This time I took I80 to Toledo and I75 south to Florida. Absolutely the best time of my life. So many interesting people and events along the way. Even the dust storm that left me looking like a coal miner is still a great memory. Not at the moment, but 47 years later, yeah. LOL

This show was also my inspiration to travel Australia for 12 months, in the early 70's, on my 68 Triumph, which also led to a life time of "biking". I'm 67 years old now, and still riding. This show set the "tone" of my life, and I'm so grateful that it did. Absolutely no regrets.

I just ran across your video again. Just as an add on, I took a girl for a ride on my 42 Harley when I was 15. We celebrated our 63rd wedding anniversary last year. She is the best thing that ever happened to me in this life. We raised four children together. I still ride short rides as I just turned 82 yesterday. I remember watching Then Came Bronson also, but, as you say, a person would have to give up a lot to live that life style. I still enjoyed the series, but just because it was entertaining, and they used a Harley. I thought Michael Parks played the part very well. Anyway, I get your point. Reality and dreams are sometimes very far apart. We only get one life to live and we just do the best we can. None of us make the right decisions all the time, but, we do what we think at the time is good. I really appreciate your honesty. It does not hurt to dream, but reality is not a bad thing.

Your analysis was spot on. Watched the show... was in the Air Force at the time...dream escape was to get a bike and travel the land. Now my dream escape after I PAY OFF my bills is to travel the land...would love to have a companion to share the experience. Never had any pleasure eating bugs and having wind in my eyes...but now since I am older 4 wheeled vehicle seems the way to go. Also never was a winnebago kind of trailer park kinda guy.....so as Bronson would say. HANG IN THERE !!!

I had next to nothing; worked just a few seasonal jobs in National Parks; and don't even remember any traffic -- I was that happy. I also felt the strongest sense of independence I've ever experienced, so all types of women from 27 to 54 (yes four in particular) were drawn to me and I couldn't care less - just enjoyed it. I grew up in SanAnselmo Ca. I had a summer job clearing poison oak for a man named Birney Jarvis. He told me that the TV show and the movie Then Came Bronson was based loosely on his life traveling the country on his Harley. He worked for either the Chronicle or the Examiner. Both were SF newspapers. He was easy to work for and had two Great Danes who were not friendly to strangers. This was around 77 or 78. Also because of it being poison oak he paid me double the going rate.

I was and still am a big fan of the "Then Came Bronson " series i am about two years older then you are so i remember it well, i had been riding Honda CB's in the 70's now i am riding a 2019 Honda Shadow Phantom before that i had owned a 2014 Honda Rebel 250. I have been riding locally in the congested suburbs of long island N.Y. for about five years and 16,000 miles so by now iv been in all types of traffic and local highway riding situations and this year i am planning on branching out beyond the confines of long island N.Y. but my dilemma right now is that unlike in the early 1970's as an eighteen year old influenced by Bronson and Easy Rider i was really looking for discovery " discovering a hippie inspired Utopian America that really never existed in mainstream middle America to begin with " i was a very young and naive dreamer like many youth of the time so now being aged 63 i just don't have the same encouragement about travel and meeting new people any longer there has really been so much negativity that i have seen in society over the past 45 years and the world over . Right now my mind is set to travel but i have no idea of where i am going possibly upstate N.Y. for the first long distance trip , my feeling of wanting to travel and discover is there but its different i am seeing the world and people in it more clearly now days there are no Utopias out there, once i get going maybe my 63 year old attitude may slightly change.

If you focus on the what everyone on social media has to say or watch the evening news, then you would think the world is coming to an end. But it is not, and if stay away from that stuff and get out there on the road, you will find that most people are pretty cool and even though there is no Utopia, the world is still an amazing place. Ride safe my friend!

Thanks for this. I never saw the show, well, maybe one episode (and you would think, with my last name, I would have paid more attention!). It was a strange time in Berkeley. I met the real Jim Bronson a few years later. His name was Birney Jarvis and he was, at the time, a police reporter for the SF Chronicle. I was very young, working at the Examiner, but everybody would drink at the M&M and I got to know him pretty well. He was a larger than life guy, great story teller, a force of nature. He was the co-founder of the SF Chapter of the Hells Angels in fifties. Definitely worth googling his name, lots of great material out there about him & the TCB show, which I am now trying to track down! Thanks again for your video here.

Thanks so much for posting this inspiring and informative video. I enjoyed it and really learned a lot from it. It reminds me very much of a couple of solo weekends I spent in Paris and Rome years ago. Given that "Then Came Bronson" is great and escapist fun, it still inspires viewers, me included, to fulfill their (attainable) travel dreams, whether they're bikers or not.

Can't say that 'Then Came Bronson' is what motivated me to start riding motorcycle, since I started riding a minibike as a kid before the Bronson TV series. The minibike and all of the cycles that I've owned since, have always represented freedom to me. The proverbial steel-stallion. But the Bronson show definitely stoked the freedom flames.

Boy , you hit the nail on the head with this one. I can relate. I'm always trying to find that balance. Striving for it actually. I am also subscribed to off grid living youtubers who are motorcyclist (backroad biker) . I am a family man, part of a wonderful church family and community but always find myself yearning for the open road or dreaming of living in the middle of nowhere Montana in a tiny solar powered cabin with my bride . Like Bronson, I think I'm a bit of a contradiction myself. I think God wired us to be social creatures but we long to get away and sleep on the ground by our trusty metal steeds under the stars. I have a grandchild now, and I hope to be to her what my grandfather was to me. He was the single greatest influence in my life. And I am also called as a parent to continue to mentor, invest and pour in to my grown children's lives. But, if I'm honest, I do get fatigue from working overtime , from having a family or community related event to go to on many weekends. I watched a Steve Perry interview recently (the ex-lead singer of Journey) . He said something that resonated with me , it's something I knew in my heart. He was asked about a reunion with the band . He said no to the reunion, no to what that meant, all the wealth a decision like that would imply. He said , "I eat too much now. I can only drive one car at a time." His message was , "I have more than I need , I am content. " I bought a new 2017 Roadmaster a year ago because I thought I just had to have something with factory and dealer support because we travel long distance on our bikes and I commute exclusively by motorcycle year round. Truth is , my Vision would have been fine. I still have my Vision but convinced myself I had to preserve it . People are still riding their Visions ( I ride mine 1 day a week) , maintaining/repairing their Victorys. So , I have 5 more years to pay for that Indian that I could have been applying to this "balance you speak of. Don't get me wrong, the Indian is a fine bike, in some way ways better than the Vision , in some ways not as good. The Indian is the 2nd best touring bike I have ever owned. I'm 50 years old. I should be better , more discipline with money by now. Should be slowing down and enjoying more free time making memories with my bride and/or good friends and family. Trying to decide, stay the course live free once the Indian is paid for but there always seems to be something . Or do I make a course correction. I don't have an answer. There is another reason for going away from the Vision. It's tall , heavy, ill mannered at low speed loaded , 2 -up and I am a small man. We have a 2007 Expedition with 210,000 miles on it. The Lord has blessed in that it is reliable still. But will it be for 5+ years? So, in summary, I still don't have it all figured out lol, sorry for the long post.

Thanks Jim, I struggle too. I am work right now and would rather be answer great comments like your's than debugging an application. But, for now, it pays the Bill's and enables me to have the adventures I seek. Like yourself and Steve Perry, I am no longer interested in career advancement or pursuing the dream. While we have made it a point to always live below our means, here lately my wife and I are having an ongoing conversation about how we can reduce our costs so that we don't have to continue working as much. We are working on it, but it is a process. At 59, I don't think going off grid is an option for us, although it does have its appeal. Honestly, it looks like too much work. I already have lawns to mow, gardens to tend and snow to shovel. My hat goes off to those who do it, but it is not for me. I would be more inclined toward the RV lifestyle, but the wife is not there yet. I keep working on her, but for now I will continue working motorcycle travel into my life...striving for that balance. Thanks!

We will never be true off grid people either. It is a lot of work . It's just a fantasy that probably isn't close to the reality of what it takes to do it. THe RV life looks like a great option. I hope we all find balance and live a full life. I'm subscribed to another youtuber , the couple has found out that the wife has cancer. Live while you can brother. We are not promised tomorrow.

One of my first jobs was polishing the Bronson bike. Bronson wasn’t just messed up by Nick’s suicide it was because Bronson was a newspaper journalist while Nick was a heroin addict due to war injuries in Vietnam. Bronson wrote about his friend’s suicide after all of his troubles trying to fit back into society. Bronson’s editor minimized Nick’s plight, saying, “No one wants to read a bunch of sentimentality over some drug addict.” Causing Bronson to wonder if life really meant so little.

I loved Then Came Bronson back when I was a kid in the 60s, It is the show that inspired me into the motorcycle culture, I often wondered how to have your cake and eat it too, Enjoy riding motorcycles and getting paid for it? So I figured that Motorcycle police officers are the ones who have it made, They get paid for a job riding a motorcycle, But I never pursued that option due to the fact working a job riding a motorcycle could possibly make you loose your passion riding a motorcycle as it would be a daily work routine, So I work when I have to and ride when I can also taking into consideration I have other responsibilities to accommodate as well, Yes it is all about having a balanced life.

Loved that show, inspired me as well but alas we have to live in the real world. The days of knocking on strangers doors asking to work for a few bucks would get you arrested today. You didn't mention the Bronson Rock! He could fix a Harley that crashed down a mountain (nearly the start of every episode). Next scene? Tapping it with the infamous Bronson Rock, back on the road. We all wanted a Bronson Rock back then lol! I work in a bike shop and the young techs don't understand when I need a hammer and ask them for a Bronson Rock. "What the hell is a Bronson Rock you crazy old coot?" I tell em to google it. Generation gap for sure.
