Want to know how I create great road trips? I have done several videos on the subject, but maybe it is time I go through my basic process for planning and creating a great motorcycle adventure or any road trip.

I see that some are commenting that the audio is only coming out of the left channel. I did not notice this when I was editing, but will look into it and try to correct that for future posts. Sorry for the mistake!

I have found that the hours at the desk are highly rewarded when on the road. I do the spreadsheet as you do only adding two details, Sunrise and Sunset. Crossing times zones can throw your morning departure times off

Some good points like having fun with the planning and possibly missing things when winging it are valid points. I like to get to each town and ask around but that is still possible when it is more structured. I will work on that!

We plan very similarly. Currently planning a 91 day jagged 4 corners of the continent. Have got it all planned on a spread sheet knowing full well that plans can/will change as soon as the rubber hits the road. Having daily routes makes it much easier to modify on the fly. Looking forward to seeing your Alaska trip come together.

I like your approach and its fun to research it and plan it all out before the trip, then just follow my plan (or not) when the rubber hits the road.

I like to add the friends you take on the trips. I have had friends over the past 30 years taking trips have added new problems. They like to speed which I am used to but on break spend valuable time checking phone, calls to wife, e-mails and their work updates. There should be clear rules on this so you don't end up fighting worse than household Honey-do list. I hate to speed to find out we are on break 30 minutes more than we planned. I like to go with every 90 minutes Gas, Pee, hydrate, stretch, check map. Every 3 hours add in longer breaks but that doesn't not mean the Phone unless using for Nav.

I took a trip around Ireland with less day to day planning, but with more planning into where I would spend a lot of time without travelling (a 5 day achaeology course, several days in Belfast where I had worked for 18 years and a one day photo tour in Donegal). I researched videos of people who had toured Ireland by motorcycle and found out about the Irish Photo Rally. But my trips each day I planned step by step from one electric recharging point to the next, taking note of the state of charge after I had stopped for a snack, rather than planning the whole day. On my Zero DSR, that is 1.5 hours riding, then 1 hour recharging my body and my motorbike, and repeat.

Yes, I do have the WR. I keep meaning to get out on it, but love traveling on the big bike too much.

Yes, when planning a long trip it definitely helps to map out a route and day to day activity. It is also fun to get on the bike and just go with only an end point in mind. Do you reserve hotel rooms in advance, not for the whole trip but maybe 4-5 days out, or in cities where rooms fill up? I'm guessing budget wise you are around $10,000, $2500 food, $5000 rooms (that's cheap rooms might add $1500) guessing $1300 fuel and $600-800 for a couple oil changes and a set of tires. Anyway sounds fun, safe travels.

You are going to have to get a service or two. You know, that helmet looks like either a Storm Trooper or some kind of Alien face. Man, I wish I was retired! Keep living the dream.

Yep, service will have to be included in your budget. I did not mention that, but depending on the length of your trip, you will have to figure that out.

You stated that you're from Massachusetts. I'm North of Boston approx.10 miles, on the shore line. Generally where are you- East, Central, or Western MA? I enjoy heading North along rt. 1A, 129, 127... to Gloucester, Essex, Salisbury, into Southern N.H., loop around back on old rt.1, etc... .You must have some favorite local MA rides you'd like us to experience. I prefer not to do more than a few 100 miles. thanx.

I am on the South Shore, so ride a lot in RI, CT as well as Western MA. I honestly do not get up to North Shore very often. Mostly because getting there is not much fun. I will get up into NH, ME and VT a few times per year. I have been know to head down to the Vanilla bean several times each year. Just a good place to go and great roads to get there.
