I'm a part time reseller and I have a ton of wartime medals from my grandfather and great grandfather that I would NEVER imagine selling off. HOWEVER, if I were to ever find myself living in a van, I'm sure my grandfather would want me to sell anything he had to see me prosper.

Uk here, very sad about the medals. The name and Regiment of the soldier is stamped into the side of the medals. The stirrups and framing is a lovely touch. So much history work and pain is encapsulated in that small frame. All wars are horrific, this one was savage.

As a addict that has been sober for 1 year and in recovery, I look at a lot of these people being desperate for money or are alcoholics or drug addicts that are looking to get a quick buck for their fix. I only say that because I use to go to pawn shops and be desperate and sell anything to get money. So just be vigilant about the people that come in and be careful about people screwing you over with fake or broken items.

His concern is while having surgery that his van will be broken into and they will get stolen and/or destroyed, he is trying to preserve them in his own way. The best outcome would be to buy them and donate them to a local museum, then let him know where they are located. This way they get preserved and hopefully kept together as a set, it would be sad to see the items sold individually.

The medals are the three issued to every member of the British Army in WWI, they are known as "Pip, Squeak and Wilfred". There's some 2.3 million of the three that were issued. I have three sets of the four my Great Grandfathers won.

i have been in and still am in the Auction Business all my life. We auctioned off an estate one time when I found many civil war tin types in a trunk in the attic, Good Ones soldiers with their firearms along with Wild Bills wild west show Cab cards and hand bills. I told the family I'm sure you don't want to sell these right. They asked if they were worth money and i said of-course they are and they asked me to auction them off because they did not know who they were. I was sad that I could not talk them into keeping them. I even found in that attic the Wisconsin Territory Land Grant from 1848 from President Polk for 600 Acres for that farm house that they were selling off stuff that had multi-generation accumulated. I told them to keep that with the farm. That they agreed on.

I think when you get as old as the man that sold his grandfather’s medals, you realize when you die all of that stuff is just going to be thrown away. A framed memorial of a war hero is only good if you have a place for it. I think i would be okay with it being sold because at least it served a final purpose and it goes on to hopefully be cherished by someone else

I had a period of hard luck / bad decisions and chose to sell a few items i loved for the same reason this man had, to preserve them even if its not with me. I knew if i kept them i couldnt properly care for them so i sold them off knowing that whoever bought them would love them. i kinda needed the money but a big part of it was just making sure it was cared for. Selling to a shop like this almost ensures a collector gets the items and will display it proudly.

Those medals are very common, many millions issued (The British War Medal, gold centre, flanked by white and blue stripes, 6,500,000, the Victory medal, multicoloured, 5,725,000) and the 1914/15 Star, 2,366,000 although each medal is individually impressed, with name, rank, number and unit. If the photo is correct (but there is no way of proving it is the right photo), that would add value. The spurs etc would add a little value. Infantry units achieve more money and sadly, KIA attract even more. What you have there is worth about $150.00. Also the ribbons on the War Medal and Star are the wrong way round, ie the Star should be red white and blue. Together, they are referred to as a trio. I'm glad you tried to stop him. Its a pity you failed.

Pete,in the early 90’s I bought a box lot of miscellaneous vintage hot rod magazines for $5 at an auction,mixed in with the magazine’s was volume one number one Playboy March 1953 with Marilyn Munroe upskirt picture on the cover.It was absolutely mint condition. I sold it to a collector the next week for $5000,one of my best scores ever..👍👍👍👍

@@markwheller971 No one said he had to go broke and give the guy everything he has, but he definitely lowballed that man big time. Real collectors know exactly how much he's going to make off of that man's unfortunate situation. Shame on him... If the old guy wasn't so desperate, he should've never taken to shop like that. He should've had it appraised and they could've told him of collectors who were willing to pay top dollar for his items. I know, because I've done it with things I've found thrifting. 🤷‍♀️

Some people do not care about the sacrifice that their relatives made. I have an internment flag off a veterans casket, his sons/grandsons had it tied up to a tree and the the front of the garage using it for a shade to work on their truck under. It made me sick, so I stopped and offered to buy it and give them a tarp. For the last 20 plus years I still have the flag, which I folded like we folded at veterans funeral services. I have the flag labeled “Unknown Tulare County Soldier “ Because I never got any names and could not remember where the house was, and soon afterwards I moved to Sacramento area.
