Sunshine, smiles and positivity were the order of the day when the Britain in Bloom judges visited Cramlington this week - the first time the town has been included in the prestigious national competition.
As Cramlington was the overall winner of the 2023 Northumbria In Bloom competition, the town was put forward in the Britain in Bloom Large Town category where we are being judged against entries from Altringham, Colwyn, Haywards Heath, St Ives and Yeovil.
Thanks to the hard work of community groups and the Council’s Operations Team the town was looking great and now we have to wait until October to see if the judges agree.
As judge Rae Beckwith said, “Bloom is all about people” and during the visit of Rae and his colleague James Cordingley they met representatives from Friends of Valley Park, Friends of Northburn, Manor Walks Shopping Centre, the Church of the Nazarene, Cramlington Red Squirrel Group, Friends of Doddington Woods, Cramlington Allotment Forum, Bright Red blood cancer charity, Colliery Row Allotment Gardens and Northumberland Wildlife Trust.
The judges also met Jordan Wearmouth and Joel Clough from Cramlington Town Council’s Operations Team and representatives of Northumberland County Council who explained the increasing emphasis on biodiversity from both councils.
Cramlington Town Mayor, Councillor Helen Morris, concluded that the visit of the judges had gone well: “I drove the judges and council staff around the town and I was very pleased with how the tour went. Community involvement is a key element in our entry and I must thank the community groups who gave their time to meet Rae and James. And our council staff deserve recognition too for the work they have put in to prepare for the judging. I’m feeling very positive - now comes the hard part - waiting until October to find out how we got on!”
