While watching your videos my wife, two kids, and I have been on an adventure much the same as you guys. We moved to Maine and bought land in the mountains. we have lived in a tiny container home for a year and a half while I build our house. there have been many struggles (frozen pipe this morning) but when the stress subsides and you get to see what you've done and enjoy some of the successes, it's all with it. Keep going. Don't give up. Spencer, from one husband/father/man to another, may your shoulders always be broad and strong enough to bear the burden you feel you need to bear. May your head know when you're trying to bear to much, and may your heart always know you are loved and appreciated for all of it.

I assume you are relatively young to take on such a project in the mountains of Maine. I watch channels in northern Michigan, northern Minnesota, and Alaska. While it is fun to watch, I could never deal with the cold or the issues of the cold. One couple in northern Michigan recently got 40" of snow over a 6 day period, and are expecting more. They have plenty of LiFe4 batteries and solar, but are having to run their generator to recharge them periodically due to no sun but they remove the snow from the panels daily and have had bits of sun, and they have a small wind turbine also to help. They also keep propane and lots of food on hand as they can't get in or out at the moment except on snowmobiles.

@vonheise i just turned 40. I don't always feel young, but i have some good years left. Enough to teach my kids that dreams are worth pursuing and that they are more than capable of taking care of themselves in any situation. Those struggles you mentioned are definitely familiar to me. We've had several feet of snow already. Most has melted off with some warm weather and rain. We are also off grid with solar. I'd like to add a wind turbine at some point, and a micro hydro turbine from the spring on the mountain we get water from.

I live on 12.5 acres that is mostly wooded, in central southern Illinois. It's like living in heaven. I just sit and gaze out the windows and sigh with contentment. Every season is a delight. You see things with each passing season and it is just so beautiful no matter which one it is. I feel the same way you feel and understand completely. Your place is beautiful.

Wow, it sure seems that you will need more than four support pilasters. I recommend adding two more in the center of the container. One of the problems with drywalling before you set the container is that when the container is lifted, it puts a lot of force on the drywall. I think that when you add an entry porch, it will be beautiful. I would put a steel gate on your patio entrance to keep bears out of your home. They can be very dangerous. You also would be smart to install a wood-burning stove in your container home and childproof it. If you encounter severe weather and are cut off from civilization for a week or more, you will be able to keep your home warm and cook food.

I remember when we put our 3 containers in place. We had to do it all in one go (delivery and placement) for logistical reasons. I had the same problem with one of them having a corner in the air. The trucker who delivered them said that they can get twisted in transit. I put some steel shims in the gap and 8 years later, they´re still there. Congratulations!

I've been watching you guys from the beginning. I love how far you come and how much you've learned. The top and bottom beams, in conjunction with the corrugated walls, work together to give the container its strength and rigidity. When you remove sections of the corrugated area relies completely on the upper and lower beams. The more cutouts you have, the weaker the super structure gets. You would definitely be better off long-term to have two more piers on each side to prevent it from sagging in the middle. Keep up the good work. It's great to see all of your hard work paying off with a beautiful family and home.

Excellent video. Looks fantastic the way the cabin is all up on the those high pillars. I think I would put in the deck/stairs to the doors. I'd hate to have to lug those cupboards and sheet-rock up that tiny ladder. Plus, after awhile, your legs are going to really feel it. [pain]. Just a thought.
