Part 3 is my fav cause its opening is lit and it helps me during my grieving process of my Grandpa. Who past 2 weeks ago.

In grade school we watched an animation of this Japanese folk tale. So long ago, I'd forgotten it, until this song! Nicely done!!

If I could have just "one" Decemberists song on a desert island it would be this performance.

Very enjoyable, nice combination of instruments. I just recently discovered this group, and they have evolved in a positive way since their NPR Tiny Desk concert 10 years ago.

Me too...I was in band (of all things) with Chris Funk when we were in Junior High. Too funny.

“Crane Wife” was probably one of their most popular albums, if not that then it’s the “King Is Dead” for sure

Always have to play 1 & 2 on the jukebox to hear 2... the best part. People get bummed on 1, destroys the mood until 2 kicks in.

When exactly did they film this concert, what month and year are they doing this 20th year anniversay? No crowd due to Covid I take it, and last question, is the cello player the same guy from The King Is Dead with a clean shave? Is it really April 25, 2021 they played these concerts or is that just the date it was uploaded
@Matthewsss3 жыл бұрын
They played 3 virtual shows on 3 different weekends April 11th 18th and 25th. Yes this year 2021 LOL. Hope this helps 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽

Yes. Nate Query the bass player (both electric and upright is the same fellow for almost all of the 20 years).

The Decemberists did play the Pawnee/Eagleton Unity Concert, so maybe he became a fan.

What the hell is that last instrument he plays? An 8-string baritone ukelele? Is that even a thing?? I googled it, and yes, I guess it is a thing. New one on me.
@trystero1729 Жыл бұрын
it is an Irish bouzouki I believe
@johnobrien6415 Жыл бұрын
@@trystero1729 That's a possibility, but when I googled that, the body shape didn't match. By watching the chord shapes he uses I can tell it's tuned in fifths like mandolins and ukuleles. With that body shape I'm gonna stick with my guess of a baritone ukulele. With 8 strings. Unless there is something else that fits.
@trystero1729 Жыл бұрын
@@johnobrien6415 bouzoukis can be any shape; also mandolins and ukuleles are not tuned the same way. mandolins are tuned in fifths, the ukulele is tuned GCEA (the highest four strings of a guitar a fourth up). the irish bouzouki is tuned in fifths like a mandolin and is sometimes called an octave mandolin. the greek bouzouki, which is bowl shaped, is tuned like a ukulele

I really can't pick one. They're all 3 excellent. If you haven't seen Collin play them solo in NYC years ago (on a whim from a request), it's worth a watch. Magical. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4GyfnuDa9yUrs0

It's great to hear all three performed in order. I always found it odd that on the album, part 3 is the very first song and then parts 1 & 2 don't appear until the second to last track. Did the band ever explain in interviews why they did that?
@livinmediocre Жыл бұрын
I found this on Reddit, which I like! "One of my favorite albums and it was during that album that Colin had mentioned his love of listening to albums as a whole and that was how he wanted to approach them, i.e Hazards of Love followed. I believe that song has the best opening type of feel and it sets the tone well. It tells you the end and the rest of the album is the building up to that point. It gets the sad tragic ending out if the way and let's the album end on a positive note."
