Crankshaft to camshaft correlation codes have been giving some technicians trouble if the root cause is not diagnosed correctly. These codes are a clue that the engine control unit is picking up signals indicating that the expected relationship, or correlation between the crankshaft and the camshafts is not acceptable. However, there are many possible causes.
P0016
Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)
P0017
Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor B)
P0018
Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 2 Sensor A)
P0019
Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 2 Sensor B)
A common cause of these codes can be worn timing chains, stretched timing belts or their associated parts like guides and tensioners. However, you should complete a thorough diagnostic process on the engine before committing to expensive replacing parts.
See the August 2021 issue of VACC's TechTalk magazine for common faults and an overview of the diagnostic procedure to narrow down the cause of these correlation codes.
