Moving to the opposite side of the engine, I removed the Crankshaft Pulley, Radiator Fan, Water Pump and Timing Gear Cover. More serious engine learning has begun on my classic mini full restoration.

Randy, Good to see you really getting on with the engine strip down, Just a little tip as your using a air wrench i would just back off each bolt with a socket by hand first just incase it may be seized or it‘s over tightened the air wrench will not snap at your wrist when it bites, I take it you have lowered the air pressure to the air wrench! I‘m a bit old fashioned but i like to feel the power i‘m using with my hands. Cheers Dave

Yes Sir.. I am able to back off the pressure via a knob on the air gun. I don't honestly know what the pressure is, but it's just below the half point. I'm most likely wrong, but my thought process was/is such that if the bolt looks horribly rusted, etc, then yes I do it be hand. These bolts looked to be a none-issue, but I understand perfectly your tip.. thank you!!

Slowing down does help. Less likely to damage any thing when you're not 100% sure

Oh a timing chain with a tensioner, told you there is something special with that engine. I've had carbs off, heads, water pumps, can covers and chains off A series many years ago but have never done anything with taking off the clutch cover (why is everyone starting to call it a Wok?) flywheel/clutch and clutch housing so have never seen those gears and oil pump before so a learning curve for me to. I've found the Haynes manual a bit of a head scratcher/ mind messer in the past.

Later models had a timing tensioner to stop the chain rattling. There's some doubt as to how effective they are though. A duplex chain setup is what most people go for.

@@peterraymond3653 my old 998cc mini had twin carbs, 12g295 head.cooper cam, cooper dizzy and duplex chain. Still got it all. I always thought tensioners were fitted to proper performance stuff. You learn something everyday lol

I didn’t know having a tensioner might be different than the norm...

Also.. 'Woke' because the clutch/flywheel cover looks like a Chinese Woke.. I agree that it does... More lingo to learn as street terminology does not match manual terminology..

Damn that time difference eh Randy!! Yeah that's been apart like I said to you earlier. On that age of engine all those mixed up bolts should be 7/16 hex with a shoulder and 3/8 shouldered hex for the tiny ones that go into the plate. The early Haynes manuals go Into more detail and the later engines are covered in the supplement section in the back. I'll check which ones we have so you can beef up your library.

I don't have the earlier Haynes, but will order one. Thanks for forcing me to check again on that. I will also replace all the fasteners if possible. I'm not fond of hex key fasteners. I think this engine has definitely been played with over its life.

@@LoneStarMini Definitely, all those non rusty fasteners!! I'd say its from late 93 / 1994 onwards that motor. I'll check that manual date later today UK time.
