Whenever I see a Terry Wad where the first room is competently put together (which is a good chunk of them, to be fair) I have to wonder: do the people making these maps learn how to use all the tools purely to make Terry wads, or are there a bunch of actually respected mappers in the community who secretly have Terry wad alt accounts?

Speaking as someone who's been fascinated by Terry Wads lately I have to admit that the bait and switch of genuinely interesting maps to just outright *garbage* is fucking hilarious. The overuse of sexual assault and general bigotry isn't funny, and is overall just kind of shitty, but the loud noises are pretty hilarious imo.

Yes. Most rely on jump scares, but Terry WADs use stock conventions--their own lexicon--and do not require slavish adherence. Good Terry WADs consider good enemy and boss design, promising Doom's traditional aesthetics before switching to the signature house style. In short: Terry WADs gravitate toward jump scares; they are seen as important, but they are never expected.

Hey, Aquarius. Two questions. One, do you have to own Ultimate Doom or Doom II on the PC to create and/or play Doom wads? I have no idea since I've always played both games vanilla style. Two, is it a big pain in the ass to make actual good Doom wads such as Moti or even Neighborhood From Hell? Because it seems like almost all of Terry's Minions are just lazy with the exception of Terry himself who always goes out of his way to be Doom's Biggest Troll. Those are both serious questions and my honest opinion of Terry, his crap wads, and his Minions' crap wads. Oh, and if any of the die-hard Terry Minions are reading this just waiting to tear into my comment, I have a message for them: 🖕😠🖕 Sit and spin on these.

The iwads are necessary to play and make mods in modern sourceports such as gzdoom, but there are also free open source iwads such as freedoom and blasphemer.

They are not diet kosher. What does that even mean? Terry WAD experimental effects and off-putting subject matter explore what we don't want to see in a Doom mod, done with the same methods that create excellent WADs to worsen the deal. Mere offense, unfairness, or entrapment do not ensure the Trappist's objective. A Terry WAD can include everything we dissociate from one, like playing fair or high production values, and you still can't chastise it for being "DIET KOSHER". The Terry WAD A) GRATES ON THE NERVES, and B) INTENTIONALLY! It does not require the same tropes from UAC Before the Nightmare, but it must succeed at driving you to the brink. Surface trappings only go so far.
