Episode Notes:
1. This game has known issues. It can hard lock and reboot the system randomly.
2. I remember the Best Buy liquidating its 3DO stock in 1996. Among the games in the bin was the long box Crash n Burn. I passed, forever regretting the choice.
3. Crystal Dynamics went on to create Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver, one of my favorite games.
4. Despite 1993 going poorly, 1994 was a stellar year to be a 3DO owner. It went from nothing to play to so much to play you didn't have enough money to buy it all.
5. There was to be a sequel for this on the M2, which was essentially to be the 3DO 2. That system never found its way to retail as a consumer games console, unfortunately.
6. The Japanese version of this is also cheap and works on American systems.
7. Captured on real hardware via the original S-Video output.

To put it another way, this game was only released two years after F-Zero's American SNES release, and one year after Mario Kart. Those games were still considered graphically impressive at the time. There's really no modern frame of reference for how quickly technology and game design advanced in the nineties.

Exactly. It’s hard to put into words how it felt going from flat racers in the 16 bit days and seeing the hills in Crash N Burn. The graphics (and price) truly felt next gen.

Indeed, we're never get that jump of evolution ever again if you think about it. We went into the 90's with our 8bit/16bit machines playing stuff like Mario or Sonic and we ended the 90's with systems like the Dreamcast which were so far ahead of anything else before it. That's just 10 years yet there was a huge advancement in technology and the games along with it. Nowadays you play a game from over 10 years ago and it's not much different to anything released this year.

I wanted this console so bad when I first saw it. I'll never forget, I was in Tower Records and when I saw Fifa, Need for Speed and Road Rash and ny jaw just dropped. I knew at that point that I was witnessing the future. In fact I felt the same way when I first saw Virtua Fighter and Battle Arena Toshinden for the first time. I miss those days so much. My mom saw thw price tag on the 3DO and just like that my dreams were crushed. Now as an adult I fortunately have money for these consoles but unfortunately not a lot of time.

@Shawn Macdonald Yeah now that's a statement I can stand behind. The first time I ever played a neo geo arcade machine I knew I wanted it. Unfortunately the console version was as rare as hen's teeth back in those days especially in the US and cost as much as a decent used car back in those days. But neo Geo it holds up, the 3DO on the other hand nope definitely not.

The graphics on this game are fascinating. Unlike MegaRace, which used entirely pre-rendered track graphics (essentially the same as playing FMV with the car sprites and collision overlaid on top), Crash 'n Burn uses true texture-mapped polygons, with the perspective changing correctly in relation to your car's position on the road. However, in order to achieve (for the time) decent performance in combination with the incredibly long draw distances, the developer came up with an ingenious method of pre-calculating all of the possible positions that your car could appear on the track, then having the 3DO stream these from the CD on the fly. This allowed them to render true polygons with the ability to shift the perspective, but without the need for the 3DO to calculate the perspective in real-time. In short, the polygons are rendered in real-time, but the calculations to determine the perspective are not. This explains why it's not possible to turn the camera around, since introducing this variable would have increased the number of calculations exponentially, making it too difficult to implement. I read a really interesting article about this years ago, but can't for the life of me find it now, so please forgive me if some of the detail is incorrect as this is all from memory!

I'm really happy that more people are starting to give the 3DO and it's library a second chance at a decent retro gaming life. I bought mine earlier this year and it's been a blast collecting games for it. Even before I bought mine I really believed that the 3DO was better than most people gave it credit for. Not perfect by any stretch, but if you were a 90's kid like me there is something there to appreciate. As for Crash 'n Burn, even without considering the time and era it came out in, I'd say the game is pretty alright. As you mentioned before it's nothing too special, but it's pretty damn impressive for it's time and has a certain charm that only cheesy 90's games can ever have. There's certainly much better racing games on the 3DO like Need for Speed, Road Rash or even Mega Race, but Crash 'n Burn is still worth a look if you find it for cheap.

When I finally got a PlayStation, I actually did buy Total Eclipse and Off World Interceptor for it. They were budget titles and decent for the money. Thank you for this video. It's hard to find thorough reviews of individual 3DO games. I am so glad you emphasized the need to keep this game in perspective with other games releasing at the time. We were a Nintendo household, and I was always proud of the beautiful games that were made possible on the SNES due to it's expansive color pallette and sophisticated sound chip. That was the standard for console graphics fidelity at the time. Then, out of nowhere 3DO appeared on the scene with THIS! It was like from another universe. It was... 3D! The sprites were so detailed they looked real! Did you see the detail, and faux lighting in that pit stop scene!? Try doing that on SNES. No way was it happening on Genesis. The first time I saw a 3DO it was running this game and that moment will forever be seared into my memory, like the first time we saw a Pixar movie. It was hard to believe the graphics were possible. At that moment I became a die hard 3DO fan. All these years later, it is still my favorite console of all time.

It looks like the camera follows the track, not the car, and as such the devs could have certain knowledge of how many and which polys would be onscreen at any point along the track. Looks like an early Saturn/PSX but without showing how the scenario suddenly appears in the horizon and doesn't need the N64's fog effect, everything years before those consoles appeared. And this was the first game, I couldn't help but think that the 3DO never got a game to brought it to it's full potential.

i am happy you were excited and enjoyed this game. In my case the 3do was stupid expensive and I could not dream of even touching one. Luckily a friend got one for xmas and invited me a few times to his place. We played a lot of thos Xtreme racing games. If Im not mistaken he had some soccer game to play with his other friends for entire afternoons.

I've got quite a bit of time for the 3D0, I think had they got the price right out of the gate, things would have been very different... When you compared the 3D0 to the likes of the Jaguar, Cdi and CD32, it really comes up aces.

We take current generation systems for granted definitely. Although it is better obviously graphically, games then actually dropped complete and with everything to unlock. No day one patched crap and dlc and polished up nice. Never owned a 3DO I was to young at the time, a few years later I got a playstation and loved it though. Remember the 3D0 having a massive release price so don't actually know anyone having it .

Interesting video. The game looks really good for such a early 3d game. Never had a 3do when it was relevant because I could not afford it as a child. But I am interested in getting a 3do in the near future and start collecting for it. I think Crash n Burn is one of the 3do games I am going to get for sure.

Great video man, I love these in-depth reviews! The draw distance is VERY impressive in this game. It kinda reminds me of the 1993 game Megarace, which also happens to be ported to 3DO. The track isn’t really rendered in that game, it is read from the CDrom as pre-rendered gfx and the game (therefor) plays more like a railshooter. Do you know whether this game does something similar?
@molhoy
@molhoy 4 жыл бұрын
Actually the graphics on this game are fascinating. As you say, MegaRace used entirely pre-rendered track graphics, essentially the same as playing FMV with the car sprites and collision overlaid on top. Meanwhile, Crash 'n Burn uses true texture-mapped polygons, with the perspective changing correctly in relation to your car's position on the road. However, in order to achieve (for the time) decent performance in combination with the incredibly long draw distances, the developer came up with an ingenious method of pre-calculating all of the possible positions that your car could appear on the track, then having the 3DO streaming these from the CD on the fly.

Poor 3DO. It wasn't a bad console it was just way crazy expensive for what you got. Even at the reduced price of $500. It was also better suited for 2D games over 3D, or at least 2D games with 3D elements. Polygon graphics require a lot of CPU power and 3DO just didn't have much of it. at 12.5MHz, it was underpowered for what 3D graphics needed to run smoothly. For comparison, the Sega CD had a 12.5MHz CPU in it as well, just that 3DO's was a 32bit chip whereas the CD was 16bit, so the CPU could handle more RAM (the Sega CD essentially was the most powerful 16bit console you could make, maxing out the RAM the machine could handle).

@@OriginalMasters Well, still polygons, you just only ever see the precalculated portions. The polygons come at the screen the same way every time no matter what. You can’t go backwards, you can’t go off the track in any way to change the perspective. I agree, quite innovative for them to do it this way.
