@Randy Alberts: Yes, they had many bumps, but ski races at that time where not such a big business as they are today so probably they did not put as much extra effort in the grooming of the track for the World Cup as they do today and maybe it also was not closed for tourists so long before. But the speeds where slower than it is now, so it was still possible to cope with the track at least for the good skiers.
@jays92114 жыл бұрын
Speeds were pretty quick back then. At the ‘82 Olympics in Lake Placid they were traveling over 80 miles an hour in certain parts
@rfvtgbzhn4 жыл бұрын
@@jays9211 80 mph is about 130 km/h. This is quite fast but today they reach up to 140 km/h in Kitzbühel and up to 160 km/h in Wengen. So they are a little faster today. But especially today the cornering speeds are higher and most crashes happen when they go around corners and lose their grip because they overlook a bump or make some other kind of error. You can also see this in the fact that on some classic races like Kitzbühel they had to change the course a little to avoid getting even higher speeds.

Ist Rule of Falling in Skiing: If you are falling, then fall. Let it go, don't try to fight it or recover. Get your skis out of the snow and keep them out. Get onto your back or side/back and slide. Do not bounce or roll or spin. Wait until you stop moving. It is when the skis got back down onto the snow, and grip, that injuries happen. Good thing I trained in some Judo as a little kid, so when I went skiing I knew how to fall.

Yes & no. That’s a Good Idea for the Average skier at 30mph. At higher speeds the fence or trees come at you fast if you slide like a turtle on it‘s back. Then you need some sort of friction. But Overall: Yes, you‘re absolutely Right.

They let spectators stand precariously on maybe a 6' drop and put the barriers so close to the edge. I hope they were ok. 3 spectators looked to have been injured at least because they were put so close to a sport where the competitors may be doing 80-90mph at that point. What's a car do on tarmac with no brakes. It just goes on for more than 100s metres. What's a human do on ice with no brakes. Takes just as long. Beggars belief they let this go on.
