The shortcut is only open in race mode, not fast lap. Even if you've unlocked it in the platform level it's never open in fast lap. Unless this only a thing in the PAL Gamecube version.

This game would be slightly more fun (in my opinion) if the cars had gears. That monotonous V8 rumble gets old fast. Yes, the focus of the game is not to listen to the engine, yes, it's a game meant for 10 year olds to play, and yes, it's a crash game, buts still, it would make the racing parts of the game a little more interesting and motivating.
