My thoughts are that Willie stole the Black Gem because he was tired of being seen as just a stupid mascot. Without Von Clutch, the amusement park would shut down and Willie could replace it with something (eg. A wumpa whip factory.)

Pasadena doesn't fawn over Crash like in the missions dialogue either. Maybe the FMVs were made earlier before they figured out everyone's characters (remember Nina was silent in Twinsanity as well).

The main reason is the racing and how absolutely broken fusion mechanic. Literally all you have to do is either pic or fuse with N Gin and you've basically won. Split with him before the finish line and you get shot forward, guaranteeing your victory. The tracks are also way to easy to traverse. I didn't even realise there was a drifting mechanic until this year!
