And large trucks running diesel just so happen to be much more fuel efficient than many cars running gasoline (petrol) on the road. Wake up and stop being so fucking blind. I'm aware you aren't familiar with MPG's (miles per gallon) but a diesel Ram Cummins 3500 (like I have) gets around 20 mpgs city. In comparison, my Toyota Camry that I had got around 22 mpgs city (I know, amazing difference right?). I also love how blind you are to the fact that MOST people who own trucks USE THEIR TRUCKS TO WORK. Are you really that dense to fantasize most "Muricans" buying these large trucks to go muddin', fucking their sisters while spittin' tobaccy juice and eating hamburgers and smokin' with their ol' pal Chuck?!?!?! That was a complete exaggeration (-_-), but it's clear that you truly believe Americans buy trucks because they dun' believe in that stupid "global warming" and like burning fossil fuels cuz it look cool. I don't mean to point fingers, but you two are ignorant.
@usfdave109 жыл бұрын
+EpicNEd that was a testosterone packed fun comment to read. The video and my comment were about safety and you are arguing function and fuel efficiency. Off topic but still good points. Do you agree/disagree with safety? Diesel vehicles have come a long way. The reason about half the vehicles in Europe are diesel is cost. Its the same reason hybrid and electric cars have not taken yet here too. The cost to benefit ratio is not there yet. Trucks have a much higher profit margin too. GM & Ford accounting for more than 2/3 of their global pre-tax earnings. (soruce: wiki & reuters). "Most people use their own trucks for work". Not sure where your getting that data from. But every source points to wrong, the most recent data is less than 40%. And that accounts for construction, farms, delivery vehicles, fire and rescue, police vehicles, etc. Ford Motor Company (source: 2009 issue of Automotive News), only 39% of the trucks sold in the US fall into the work category. Maybe you want to feel justified in your purchase, or maybe you think someday you might need to tow a boat or fit (insert item here) into the bed. But the data does not support your claim. Oh and the stats get even better when you look at miles of use too. Imagine if Affluenze kid was not driving a Ford F-350 and speeding and under the influence, do you think he may not have killed all those people, ie was his large truck size a factor in the death toll? If you have any other questions or can provide source for your data please cite them.

If your "Smart" you should buy a bigger car. Don't see how it's going to survive a hit from a truck at all, not enough room to give way for a crumple zone or absorb the impact.
@erickgonzalez12317 жыл бұрын
Scrumpy YOS you do realize not all large cars are safer than smaller cars. Take the Dodge Caravan or Chevy Astro, their really big cars and both got Marginal and Poor. On the other hand, smaller cars like the Smart For Two and the toyota Yaris, both very small cars got very good ratings in all the tests.
@ThePuffin776 жыл бұрын
The ratings given out to cars are relative to their size. It gets a "Good" rating for a Microcar. The IIHS has specified that bigger cars typically do better in car accidents.

+Gard Bjørnar Østvold what you view as stubborn, the rest of the world views as practicality. The infrastructure of the United States requires we have big v-8 DIESEL trucks. Oh, and there's more I4 engines in the U.S. then and other engine design. Who developed those V-10 and V-12's? Sure wasn't the US. ohh.. they came from EUROPE! Why don't you go bash on China or something..
@usfdave109 жыл бұрын
+Nathan Houston "infrastructure of the United States requires we have big v-8 DIESEL trucks" where does that come from? Did you mean to say can allow trucks and not requires them? The v10 exists in the US too, dodge and ford both have them. The viper was on of the first with Europeans adopting later. (source: wiki) So not sure what point you are trying to make there.
@nathanhouston71749 жыл бұрын
Ferrari, Bentley, Bugatti, VAG, all developed 10 and 12cyl engines almost 60 years ago. Ford adopted a large cylinder high displacement engine after Ferrari. Last I checked Ferrari was Italian. And yes, light duty V8 trucks that can HAUL large loads are necessary for the American consumer, as well as millions of others worldwide who purchase them. Look at Toyota. Why spend a premium on a diesel engine that gets LESS fuel mileage and costs more to maintain, when one can purchase a light duty 5.3L N/A V8 from GM? Infrastructure meaning BUISNESS, buisness that drives the economy, thus contributing to the infrastructure. Not a difficult concept to perceive. I'll aggree that the majority of those who purchase V8 trucks on the US don't use them the way they were meant to be used. But flat out saying nothing requires Americans to have V8's is absurd. You couldn't buy a cargo van with anything less then a V8 up until 2 years ago. I'm an auto technician btw, so I know what I'm talking about. Any other points?
@usfdave109 жыл бұрын
+Nathan Houston Nobody is arguing not needing semi trucks and work vehicles. The argument is against people who think they need a big truck and do not. We can argue who you think developed (I referenced produced) the 1st v10, but that's irrelevant for the case of safety and the video. I misread your infrastructure comment. We live in a changing world, where trains run on less fuel, trucks will no longer transport gasoline as we move toward a more electric transportation based society. Imagine if Affluenza kid was not driving a Ford F-350 and speeding and under the influence, do you think he may not have killed all those people, ie was his unnecessary large truck size a factor in the death toll?

@palmz4u I had this argument with my father 33 years ago when he was teaching me to drive. His idea was that you should be so good a driver that you avoid the idiots that are out to get you. A tough yardstick but he is probably right 99.9% of the time. Thats a pretty good strike rate. My orignal statement still holds true The most important safety feature is the driver or the attitude of the driver. Because BAD drivers crash cars. When we start to think that way there will be safer roads

@mhtube01 in fact the Smart is often as safe, sometimes even safer (!) than cars from higher classes. Sounds stupid but it really is like that. A lot of active and passive safety systems. Friend of mine had an Chevrolet HHR - and sold it after 2 months cause he didn't feel safe at all in it. Instead he bought a Smart forfour.

If you are making a turn into traffic with so little space that a gear change is the difference between life and death, you don't need to be driving any car.

tjohn6041 Yes, but the Trannie in the Smart is actually quite slow, so you are better off putting it into manual mode in these situations.

@shookwood wouldn't look that good, but: forces on the fortwo are deflected away from the passengers. Because of the ultra-short wheelbase, a side impact will almost always hit a wheel and the suspension. Just like Formula 1 cars, the suspension will collapse, absorbing the impact and reducing forces on the passenger compartment
@Likosaurus10 жыл бұрын
Judging by the speed it was going at (~26m/s), and its weight, combined with the time that took it to come to a stop, the car hit that surface with a force of roughly ~2,000kgf. Interesting...
@lordoftheflies53110 жыл бұрын
Isn't kgf a unit for gravitational force? This is impulse related work. P=MV which would be the SI unit (kg*m)/s
@Likosaurus10 жыл бұрын
As far as I am aware, kilograms/force is just a kilogram equivalent for newtons.
@lordoftheflies53110 жыл бұрын
***** here is a snippet "The kilogram-force, or kilopond, is a gravitational metric unit of force. It is equal to the magnitude of the force exerted by one kilogram of mass in a 9.80665 m/s² gravitational field". So it is related to newtons, but only in the vertical axis, because that is where the gravitational force exists. These cars however are colliding in the horizontal axis, so you should only have the unit newtons, which is the unit for F (force) in the equation. F=m(mass)*a(acceleration)

@AndreTwin I agree. I've never tried to claim that the size of a car is irrelevant to its safety, only that size is one of many different factors. For a car of its size, the Smart car is safe.
@EnjoyFirefighting13 жыл бұрын
@Mazotheman ther are many normal sized cars which aren't as good as a Passat! In tests the Smart was about as safe as a Chrysler Grand Voyager, Skoda Octavia/Superb, Volvo S60, Dodge Caliber and so on. And since you don trust these tests too much: Have you see the videos of tests where they crashed a Smart against e.g. a Mercedes?

@bradkrit Actually is isn't slowing in 6 inches and the G-force required to kill you will require the car to be moving in excess of 70mph.
@Mello_Gello310 жыл бұрын
i guess what you would really need another car to be were that structure is that is being hit because it should also take the impact. it looks like the smart is hitting a really hard section on the structure and bounces back. most of the momentum is going back to the smart because of the structure. the structure should be able to move like a real car so the the effects are like a real life crash which in this case it is not..

there is a inconsistency compared to other tests this company does. the difference with this car is they are using a protector in front rather than the solid and immovable barrier for the frontal small overlap crash test. If you look at other tests, it is the metal of the barrier that tears up the car and this has a liner or cushion, not the straight metal.
@EnjoyFirefighting13 жыл бұрын
@acidfire68594 the structure surrounding the tridon safety cell designed to crush and quickly absorb impact energyis. Cause of the short wheelbase the suspension collapses and is absorbing the impact and reducing forces on the passenger compartment. And then of course there are also tensioning devices and belt force limiter. And after all that passive safety there are also the active safety systems...
