My since-late husband knew people who enjoyed this music, and I felt a little disconnected from him when they'd reminisce over their separate musical experiences. Much of the music I first fell in love with were made in the 90s, but obviously I didn't experience the culture of the decade and its sound; I'm just a music snob. But I've never heard this song until I stumbled on this video by complete accident. I keep coming back to it, and it induces such a nostalgia and a sweet melancholy. There's something special about it; the relatability a lot of us share in the comments I think is a strong symptom of that.

How so? I don't hear any instrumental virtuosity, and the singer guy sounds like a jerk, and sings lyrics about nothingness.

@@davidjoseph3403 "Own me"? Dude, it's not a competitive event. I simply don't care for the song, and can't stand this guy's vocal style, that's all. Nothing deeper to it. It showed up one day in my feed, and until that moment, I had not known any of the CTDs' music. I gave a listen and don't like it. I was aware that they had been popular at one time, but I don't seek out that type of music.

I was 7 yrs older than you, then. This song was, at the time, novel because of the singers voice. The lyrics on the other hand, were profound. Sometimes I think I miss my youth, but the good moments were few and fleeting. The rest was pain and suffering. Be careful with reflection. It can only get better.

I was an undergrad in Greece attending summer school at Harvard in the summer of 1994. I bought the CD and had the song playing on repeat. One day I heard a knock on my door. It was the RA (a graduate student). He said, look man, it's a good song but can we take a break from listening to it over and over every freaking day?

I've found that certain songs are permanently ruined for me due to my listening to them at the time of tragic events in my life, thus connecting them to those events. Even 35+ years later, there are still certain songs that I can't listen to or they'll immediately bring me right back to those moments. Now for the past 10 years or so, I make a point to avoid all music after a death or tragedy and sometimes for months later.

To me this is a masterpiece. My reading: young people feeling insecure (1) something unexpectedly hurt their image and self worth (2) something they were born with hurt their image and self worth, so they deflect by hurting the image and self worth of (3) a person who believes differently than the herd. This is a poignant and good song.

To me it plays out like little kids telling each other stories and spreading rumors. At least that's what I got out of it from how it's worded. When we were little, there were always these weird and often times overly exaggerated stories that would circulate on the playground.
