I'm a bass man myself but you and your dad were correct. The verse chords, already varied and subtlety building, seem almost triumphant as we get to the chorus. I only first heard this song a few years ago by extreme chance (a coworker playing music from his phone in the work truck) but from when the chords first started I was completely transfixed. When it was over I had him play it two or three more times in a row. Funny thing is that this song was largely shit on by the "critics" of the time and even some now (based on a slightly-above-cursory internet search). Well, I (and many others) would say I'm the most musical guy they know. Chorus kid for my whole life and I'm honestly the best singer I know, near perfect pitch, completely perfect rhythm. I play bass extremely proficiently, although I'd say in that regard I'm more of a player than a "musician." All that's to say I fucking love this song and it's not just NOT bad, it's very good. Some of the stuff I read was seriously people bitching about things like "the lyrics" and "it's just boring," I'm thinking to myself as I read this "how high are your expectations for the 'Mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm' band?" This song draws you in with its minor chords and the singer's rich voice, then you're told a tragic but nuanced story about some people from another time.

Best track on the album with a brilliant story. No idea how near or completely far off the mark it is but I've always assumed the Maidens are lovers but couldn't be openly, so having been pestered to death by the randy Knights, decided to do away with them in a way that nobody (including the Knights) would suspect anything other than a tragic accident. Have the best mental image of them both being a little dark and sinister in enjoying seeing the fate of the Knights unfold but at the same time feeling justified in at least having them trip balls and believe the tigers weren't there at all. Touché Maidens...

I LOVE this song. The melody just goes to so many unexpected places and hops effortlessly between major and minor passages. And not once does all this chord craziness sound contrived or out of place. Also, what a great bass line.

I bought this cd because it featured on Dumb and Dumber. This was and is an excellent album and there wasn't a duff track on it. I can remember listening to it with my portable Technics CD player at work as I worked away and wanted the day to end so I could go home.
