The Atari style joystick had EIGHT directions. It was basically constructed as a four-button electronic pad mounted below a stick with 4 tabs that would press each of the 4 buttons as the stick was moved about. However, when the stick was moved diagonally (up-left, up-right, down-left, or down-right) 2 of these buttons would be pressed simutaneously, effectively informing the game that the player wished to move diagonally. BTW, this is how most home versions of Qbert functioned, by reading the diagonal movements of the joystick as combinations of vertical and horizontal electronic button presses, although I believe the original arcade version actually set the electronic buttons under the joystick at the 4 diagonal positions instead.

Will always prefer the accuracy of input from ps1/2 arrows over any analogue stick for fighting games. inputting ^ > > ^ (x) without pressing a diagonal is priceless. though of course for moving a character in a 3D environment the stick is best. I am not at all a fan of the motion controls in general. Again, accuracy in control is important. Having said that, i love seeing innovations in the area. Growth & experimentation is a good thing.

@Tfin8 жыл бұрын
Light guns are a thing that might have deserved mentioning. The trackball is essentially a stationary mouse, and those are also a unique group. Larger joysticks (I had several back in the '90s) are just iterations on the ones covered; they were an advanced form of the 2600's stick. Racing Wheels are similarly related to the 2600's paddle controller (and usually not the driving controller that looked the same but had different guts). The Power Glove is best forgotten.
@GamermanZendrelax8 жыл бұрын
I would guess that it has more to do with time constraints and the keyboard and mouse not being designed for use in gaming. Their sheer versatility definitely makes them very effective game controllers, and rare is the strategy game that can survive without the accuracy of a mouse, but the ending already felt a little rushed. And they didn't even get to mention the Switch, which they're probably super annoyed about right now.

Calling that episode "Controllers" would've been a lot more appropriate. But generally "Input Devices", and then no keyboard, no mouse, no joystick except for that very first one? You could do a whole episode like this one just for joystick "ages". You know, people actually play(ed) using those. The focus of this series is ... puzzling, sometimes. Wasn't this about _games_ somewhere, instead a very particular subset of video games?

I haven't used an Xbone controller yet but one important shortcoming of the Xbox 360 controller IMHO is the d-pad. It's fine for a button press or two but if you want to use it for a longer period of time, it's in a really awkward position. When playing SNES games on an emulator with my 360 controller, I always find myself switching back to the analog stick. The PS4 controller doesn't have this issue.

To be honest, the touchscreen is the absolute worst input device you can use, it mixes your output with your input. It's only advantage is that it saves space. Also, no mouse and keyboard? I know Nintendo didn't solely come up with the motion technology of the Wii, but it was SOOO funny to me when Playstation came out with the Move. It was such a blatant pathetic rip off I still laugh at it to this day. Funny thing is, I heard the guy who basically designed the motion technology approached Sony at first and they turned him down. I could have that wrong, but that makes it even funnier.
@tristragyopsie54648 жыл бұрын
Motion tracking controls can be useful, but like any input device, they are not going to take over the market or become the center of the IO world. While their flop was inevitable their creation will open doors if they leave a good enough footprint and are left OPEN for others to play with. In fact, we would have had a lot of this much sooner if the Power Glove had been more accessible for hobbyists and tech geeks to overcome its weaknesses. I would say it won't be long before that old flop gets more than a few revisits as people play with 3D printing and new cheap tiny sensors and input methods. If it can be made lite, comfortable, cheap, and adjustable in size, it would be the most natural style of VR controller we could ever have. For example, an Idea that is well within the bounds of what we have now a wrist-strapped device with an IR range sensor pointed at the back of the hand to detect hand angle, sensors in the band to detect when the hand is open or closed and possibly gestures. then a gyroscopic sensor for orientation of the whole thing, and a reflective surface of a certain color picked up by something like a camera could give almost all the info needed to have real in-game control of objects. though it does leave the disconnect of you not actually haveing anything in your hand. I would build something like this myself, but I am not only broke but very very VERY poor. As with many of my ideas I expect people to eventually stumble onto the same idea and run with it, and I look forward to seeing where it goes.
