Biggest take away from whole series: truth resists simplicity Simple narratives, while often reassuring, are almost always partially and sometimes entirely wrong. To truly understand the world in which we live we have to break away from comfortable thought patterns and easy explanations. If more of us do this than the world will be a much less hateful and misguided place. In conclusion, better understanding of history will alleviate world suck and educators like this help make that happen. Thank you John Green for the free knowledge and for challenging biases and misconceptions that I didn't even know I had.

I was a history major in college. although this series gives well researched, creative and clear narratives, one must recognize that the study study of history is not about memorizing facts, but creating your own arguments. history, unlike mathematics or chemistry, is truly a liberal art. Your professors and classmates are to provide an environment that teaches you best practices i.e. understanding various viewpoints, using resources, proper structure etc. it is then your job to use these tools and create art - your own historical narratives.
@nixhex128 жыл бұрын
what is captivating about history is not the stats or timelines. it's the innumerable lessons and arguments that can be unearthed to help us better understand and navigate the here and now

The irony that watching this at the very moment the covid-19 virus is spreading around the world🤦🏼♀️ I guess we kind of got that pandemic after all🤷🏼♀️ Should be noted that I’m watching this just as it is just starting to spread outside of China, so for all I know there might not be as bad as the media makes us think. Edit: it is pretty much just as bad as we feared🤦🏼♀️ 2nd Edit: it’s worse, it’s actually so much worse

Just so you all know: 2014 was the first year in recorded history in which the world economy increased while carbon emissions lowered. This marks a huge change and proves that we don't need to increasingly destroy the environment for the economy to grow. Also, sustainable forms of energy are getting cheaper and cheaper, and it's only a matter of years before they're cheaper than "traditional" forms of energy. Solar panels, for example, are 10x cheaper than what they were 10 years ago. We also have been developing research in things like nuclear fusion, that could change everything: clean, cheap and UNLIMITED energy for the entire world, and it's very likely that we'll see that in the first half of this century. Thankfully everything today indicates that we have a bright future ahead of us despite all the problems we'll face along the way.
@MiriaJiyuu9 жыл бұрын
Sexual Potatoes Just going to point out to add a bit to your point that this is in large part due to increasing awareness of the negative effects we were having on the environment and the demand for change. In the last ten years we've spent a lot money in researching safer, cheaper and cleaner energy sources while moving away from traditional forms of energy creation like coal. Also when I spelled moving wrong and opened up the spelling options to fix it there were two; moving and mongrol. Crash Course has officially influenced my computer's dictionary.

I really appreciate the high density of information, the humor, and the quality of this series. As someone who's mostly been interested in science and philosophy, I ignorantly thought that history was just a bunch of biased and dramatized stories. These videos has given me a newfound appreciation for history. I see now that we really can learn from history, and it is much more than just dated events and people. You point to how history brings up interesting philosophical questions and many fair points that could help us strive towards a better future. Thank you so much.

I wouldn't really say globalization was good or bad, but a change. This has happened much in historical debates on whether anything was good or bad, it's not always black and white like that. When you look at all the things that globalization brought to the table, It's hard to say whether it was good or bad, and if the question takes longer than 30 seconds to come to a conclusion (on any good or bad question), then it likely wasn't either, but merely a change
@SuperHamsterhuey9 жыл бұрын
luvcheney1 That's how it plays out on paper, but economics rarely does, which is why so many economic theories have risen throughout history, because they most often, they are created by 1. Creating an idyllic economic scenario 2. Putting your economic theory into said scenario 3. Your scenario works because you set it up that way 4. Claim that it works Now, overall I think that globalization is very good, with some heavy side effects. While it allowed goods to be spread throughout the world, it also caused environmental problems, social problems in 3rd world countries, and other things, but the point I was trying to make was about not viewing everything in black and white like is so frequently done in looking at history, but possibly looking at it by simply not putting it in the terms "Good" or "Bad"
@SuperHamsterhuey9 жыл бұрын
luvcheney1 Okay, I've given out the wrong idea here. I like capitalism usually even more than the next guy, but even the most die hard capitalists can't deny the wars it brought and slavery and... Well it was mostly wars and slavery but there were a lot of them. Every event in history brings good stuff and bad stuff, and few times does one out weigh the other. And to your "Why do business when it's bad for you?" Remember that a good portion of factory work in 2nd/3rd world countries is mostly "Work 14 hours a day, and we'll give you enough rice to make you not die". It's not a good deal for the workers, but they have to do it, or else they starve

Yay after watching this whole series I feel like I’ve learned a lot! I encourage anyone else to do the same. There’s so much the general population gets wrong about history, also thinking of your life in the timeline of world history is very eye-opening. I love people who work hard to spread education in a fun way. Thank you!

Everyone! I passed my A.P Exam!
@TheHogiBogi8 жыл бұрын
+Nattalia Rivas Well first off, congratulations! And secondly, HOW DID YOU TAKE IT ALREADY??? WAS IT HARD??? HOW MUCH DID YOU PREPARE, AND IF YOU WOULD BE SO KIND, WHAT WERE THE ESSAY PROMPTS???? Over here in California, we're not going to take it until May 12 so it makes me think as to how you could've taken the test AND received results in such a short amount of time! Not to seem doubtful, but rather confused.
@nattaliarivas59708 жыл бұрын
+peppabling Wow that's late. In Nevada you take it in April but I took a A.P Modern World History QC (Quick Course). Its the same class and you learn the same curriculum, but in a faster time frame. You have the the class everyday for 2 hours(class takes place for 1 elective). I took it to leave school early.
@nattaliarivas59708 жыл бұрын
+peppabling The exam was pretty hard. The multiple choice was a little tricky, the DBQ's were extremely easy, and the FRQ's were tough. To prepare I pretty much just studied all kye events and memorized most important dates. BUT I did memorize ALL Dynasties and the leaders of the Dynasties. And lot of flash cards were involved. But as long as you put a pretty good effort, you should do fine. I forgot the prompt for the DBQ but for the FRQ it has to do something with the industrial industry.

NO. NO. NO. I need more of these; they're the only unbiased resource I've ever found, and he's so funny about it that it interests me even more than world history usually does!
@ciarabowmann11 жыл бұрын
Actually I'm pretty sure that at one point John admitted to his biases (i.e his often liberal and left leaning points of view and ideals) But like he says, every historian is biased in one way or another it's just that the best of them make a point of openly admitting to having them at all! I think this is what makes him such a great teacher/reliable source/honorable humanbeing :)
@pianosinger811 жыл бұрын
Ciara Bowman I understand that every historian is biased, but what I meant to say is that he's the best at hiding his biases. He doesn't worry as much about political correctness or offending people (just look at the Capitalism vs. Socialism video!); he just tells things like they are. It's very refreshing for someone like me, who, even though everyone I know seems to share one opinion on things that matter to me, refuses to form an opinion without hearing both sides of the story and thinking it through very thoroughly.
@ciarabowmann11 жыл бұрын
pianosinger8 Yeah, I get what you mean. A shortage of decent resources can be incredibly frustrating:')
@Hissanrach11 жыл бұрын
pianosinger8 The Capitalism vs Socialism video is a prime example of him failing to "tell it like it is" since he barely even mentioned socialism and stuck to Keyensian economics only (JMK being someone he openly admitted to admiring). And you can bet he's "politically correct", at least when it comes to his clearly liberal stance on most issues. For things he may not agree with exactly he has no qualms with being more dismissive towards. I don't want to make it seem as though John is a poor teacher of history here, but he could certainly stand to be more objective. It's just that he knows his crowd very well and speaks their language; ie, liberals and the rest of the center-left (In American terms of course; internationally, he's right of center). Remember, this show does no focus on education first and foremost; its to entertain and captivate a select audience. That's John's greatest triumph with these series, and if you actually retain any information, it's icing on the cake.

I had to watch every single one of these Crash Course videos and answer 658 questions on them for my AP World History course this year. This began as a tedious assignment i had to remember every week, but now I must say it is sad to leave. THis series is amazing in the explanation of history and how it all conects overall. I am taking my AP test next thursday and after watching these i feel like i know alot more than I would have. Shout out to John green for keeping me educated.

Things that should help globalization, vegetarian diet, vertical farming, and nuclear and green energy.
@TheHalcyonTwilight8 жыл бұрын
Vertical farming requires more power though, as you replace using the sun with using UV lamps. Additionally a lot of land isn't suitable for vegetarian farming which is currently used for animal farming. The Welsh valleys, California ranches, New Zealand and many others spring to mind.
@Candydaria8 жыл бұрын
You need to consider that the land (water and energy) used for feeding animals can be used directly to feed humans. www.wri.org/blog/2016/04/sustainable-diets-what-you-need-know-12-charts
@ZacharyRoss8 жыл бұрын
Well it is true that some of the land is not suitable for human veggie growth raising animals cost 10 times the calories. So we would really only need to recoup 10 percent of the yield. which we would and then some for example the largest animal feed crop is "cattle corn" which is over 50 percent of the corn grown in the US all of which would be usable for no feed crops. The land we couldn't use as easily could be returned to the biosphere which would be a huge boast to overall ecological stability. Also vertical farming is a great thing. There is a reason these multimillion dollar operations are opening up. Like yes it requires energy to operate them but so does a globalized food system. Those bananas in the gas station didn't grow there they were shipped and then trucked. Tractors, combines and sprayers run on gas. The synthesise of pest control and fertilizers involves energy. The massive irrigation systems run on energy. Vertical farming drastically cuts or outright eliminates these energy costs. So it's not as simple as saying vertical farming costs alot of energy cause so does traditional globalized farming.
@TheHalcyonTwilight8 жыл бұрын
Candydaria You can't grow farms in the Welsh valleys, the Himalayas, or much of New Zealand, but those areas are used for rearing lots of goats and sheep. Also traditional farming has the benefit of being an economy of scale, whereas vertical farming would become very difficult to achieve at a similar scale. Don't get me wrong, I support it, but it's not without its drawbacks.
