It's interesting how God of War 2018 and now God of War: Ragnarok was done based off of this. When comparing the game to the myth itself, there's a handful of similarities but also a ton of differences (for one, Loki is a literal child, therefore having him be married _and_ tied to a rock with the guts of his child is something Sony SM knew they absolutely weren't gonna do). Great stuff.

Something that you left out is Lif and Lifthrasir, two humans female and male, who manage to survive the fires of Ragnarok by hiding in a wood (possibly tied to Mimir based on the name, and therefore might represent Yggdrasil as a kenning). These tie into the theme of hope and new life from the old, as they repopulate the now-fertile land of ash and water.

*SPOILERS FOR GOD OF WAR* * * * As a Norse fan, I love the way that God of War approached the mythic tales from the point of view of Mimir, and Loki. For example, Baldur as a deeply scarred individual driven to madness, and hatred toward his mother for casting a spell on him that doesn't allow him to feel, how Frigg and Freya are the same person, but in Odin's scorn for Freya, had scribes separate the two in stories, so that Freya would never get any positive credit, and how Mimir expertly tells stories of Odin and Thor's more deplorable actions, showcasing their selfish natures, whether for violence or wisdom. All of these examples essentially adding an asterisk to the heroic tales of these particular Aesir. In order to soften the actions of Thor and Odin, Odin vilified the Giants in myth, along with the actions of Loki. Meanwhile, Loki is heralded as the clever hero who pays for his actions, but breaks free as the hero of the Giants and nature. With the death of Baldur in God of War, Ragnarok is initiated early, and thus the turning of the tide on a generation of the selfish Aesir who took everything they wanted, made sure the good of their kind like Ty'r was killed, and cared little for the lives of mortals, nature, and the giants. All in all, Highly recommended game.

Actually most of what we know about Ragnarök comes from the Völuspá in the Poetic Edda, which was written some time 9th and 10th centuries in Iceland, a century before Iceland was christianized. But sure, the oldest found versions of the poem are copies from the 12th century, so it could have been altered by later authors

In Neil Gaiman’s book on Norse Mythology I read that Loki invented the net because he was cocky and wanted to figure out how he would catch himself. I suppose there would be many forms of the myth. Fun to hear.
@LauraDFTBA7 жыл бұрын
Sigyn didn't 'arrange' to be left with Loki, the Gods left the decision to her. She hadn't committed any crime but was married to Loki, so her punishment was enough to see her sons die as part of the imprisonment of their father. So she was left either to leave Loki to suffer for the death of their sons, or stay with him because... what else was there left for her to do? Admittedly we don't have a lot of sources about Sigyn (blame the Norse oral tradition and Christians destroying or rewriting written versions), she completely disappears from the Sagas after Loki escapes and the start of Ragnarok. Does she die, does she wander off and show up with Odin's sons to help rebuild the world after Ragnarok, does she turn into a flea who gets put in to a box and put into a bigger box and then smashed with Mjölnir, who knows.

Is This Rain? Not just the Norse, this goes for the Slavic , Celtic , and Germanic peoples as well. The old ways have been all but erased.
@alicev54967 жыл бұрын
It was more politically favourable. During the Middle Ages the various nordic kings were slowly starting to turn their realms into centralised kingdoms instead of loose federations of small territories with their own lords. Christianity was a good tool for that because 1) it came with an established and orderly hierarchy of literate clergymen who could be used to run the administration necessary for that process and 2) christianity had a very strong ideological undercurrent of sacred kingship. Before this kings, while they often had an important role in religious ceremonies, were purely worldly rulers. The closest they got to any supernatural aura was mythical descent from a god. But if they converted their people to christianity and convinced them that they were sacred rulers, appointed by god, like the Frankish kings, that massively increases their authority and prestige. Plus, when their realms started to become centralised states, they needed to start some more extensive foreign policies. If they wanted their kingdoms to survive and not be isolated outsiders free for the taking in the eyes of the south, they had to integrate themselves in the system of christian states. And quite obviously, aside from adopting its wider cultural attributes, that required conversion to christianity. After all what good, christian ruler would establish marriage ties or an alliance with a kingdom of godless pagans.

You forgot to mention that the evil serpent Nidhögg also survives and lives on in the new world, showing that evil never really disapears. You also forgot to mention that two humans, the man Ask and the woman Embla, survive to repopulate the earth. So basically, the end of norse myth sounds earily similar to the very beggining of another myth. Think about it: The world is being rules by a good God (Balder), whose primary trait is love as opposed to fierceness, the first man and woman (Ask and Embla) live in a beautiful and peaceful green land, but they are under the looming threat of the evil serpent (Nidhögg). Hmm...
@randomtimeline7 жыл бұрын
I think you find this sounding suspiciously christian because it is. The two humans who survive in Norse mythology is called Lif and Lifthrasir and Balder is explicitly not the ruling god of the new world, this world is ruled by a god whose name is yet to be learned. The significance of Balder returning isn't that he returns to rule but that he returns having made peace with Hoder. Balder and Hoder was in the original stories bitter archenemies and fought a for a very long time due to their mutual love for the princess Nanna, this war between the two is actually a very major arc and a catalyst for a lot of the events in the myth. If you think I'm making this up then here you go: The original story of Balder's death: sacred-texts.com/neu/saxo/saxo03.htm

Ask means "Ash tree" not simply "ash". So it has nothing to do with "ashes to ashes." Embla either means "Elm tree" or "Vine."
@torbjornlekberg77567 жыл бұрын
+Thor Sneppen Yes and no. First of all, we do not realy know how old the 'asatro' is. Secondly, we may not be 100% sure if nordic pagans believed the wolrd to be cyclic in nature, but it is by far the most believable interpretation. After all, every non-christian culture view time that way.

SuiCaedere Oh I hope they do that! I know very little about South American myths. I have a hard time even remembering the difference between Mayan and Incan

It's really too bad that the Nazis in Norway are ruining Norse mythology. You can't even wear Norse jewelry without people suspecting you're one of them.

Aki Vector and how is that a bad thing? being proud of your heritage / history is only shamefully if you make it so. (not many nazi in Norway BTW, biggest national socialist group is nord front which is not nazi)

Not just in Norway, unfortunately.

Really weird for you to have that opinion, it is mostly something i hear from Americans. Living in a Nordic country i know quite a lot people who wear jewelery and other items with Norse symbols, and have never heard of them, nor heard second or third hand accounts of anyone, haven been taken for a nazi. Even though some of the extreme right have some crazy fetish for this stuff..

I love the interpretation that Ragnarok is the metaphor of the changing of the seasons, where Scandinavia has endless sun for half the year and endless night for the second half. There are those who think Loki wasn't to do with Baldr's death and it was just Hodr, meaning that Baldr simply returns from the dead after a while. So only one god dies, the symbol of the sun, over and over but simply returns. The final battle is more a future prophecy, that somehow got squished together with the Baldr myth...

So if Odin isn't resurrected, how come he's still alive in American Gods? Or maybe Ragnarok hasn't happened there.

At 7:35 wasn't the Sun eaten earlier by Sköll? Why are none of these gods killed at Ragnarok mentioned in the dying god episode since they all died?
