Check out the FMS 1300mm PA-18 Super Cub: shrsl.com/3svzw Nate was so excited about this RC plane that he built it as soon as it arrived. This is the brand new FMS 1300mm PAS-18 Super Cub. It comes as PNP or RTF. Unfortunately the maiden flight did not go as expected and he crashed and demolished this rc airplane within 5 seconds. He is super bummed so give him so love in the comments. Yes sir, made that mistake once and now I always bring at least one other flying machine even if I probably won't fly it. The time it happened to me was on a flying wing that broke the only prop I had for it on the first flight. Had to drive back home, get another prop and another plane and I was swearing the whole way. Gas is too darn expensive now.

@@michaelkrailo5725 You said that right gas is outrageous. I know you was pissed 2hr drive over a prop 😆🤣 I had a couple nitro planes 20+yrs ago. It's very easy to forget to bring a glow plug starter etc. I've had to go back home several times lol. Thankful its not but 15mins to the flight field. Still pisses me off though. 😆🤣 Thankfully I haven't had that happen since I got back into flying the last couple years. Flying all electric doesn't require so many extra things to get it in the air and things to forget and leave at home 😁 ✌🏻

I picked this PA-18 up this past spring. It is by far the best one of 9 I have in my hanger. The most realistic flier I've experienced so far. Buddy you stalled. When you try to take off with flaps down 90 degrees like barn doors then retract them at 2 knots of course you will stall straight into the ground. Also if you did proper checks then the servo wouldn’t have magically stopped working when you take off. You can’t just blame it on the plane c’mon now. Fms makes great products and this is the best one they make. Don’t show it in a negative light from a pilot mistake you didn’t recover from.

@awesomebob1684
@awesomebob1684 2 жыл бұрын
@@incubrian That doesn’t change the fact that he flew on the defective servo. Rather than doing the right thing and replacing it, he admitted to testing it and seeing the bad servo not working but he flew anyway and crashed. Making it mistake not the plane’s. Sure Fms may use cheap servos but that’s not a reason for him to ignore the issue.

Agree....Watched the takeoff over and over. The elevator WAS NOT FULL UP! It was level. The flaps were in a position, that with full power, would cause a near vertical takeoff. Totally operator error.
@Doggeslife
@Doggeslife 2 жыл бұрын
It was both. Flaps should NOT be full down on take-off. However, slo-mo playback shows no elevator motion at all times, so it was failed and contributed to the crash. A standard control surface check before take-off would have discovered that. That's how pilot Dale Snodgrass lost his life. Locked elevator.

Nothing worse then flying on a cold day and you have a equipment failure. The last 2 FMS, the Rafale 80mm and the A-10 twin70mm, that had a bad servo. I caught them during the build with a servo tester. I always run all servos on the tester for 5 min before building. FMS did stand behind the product but it took weeks for them to answer the service e-mail and then 3 more weeks for the servos to get to me. I am looking forward to the maiden flight v2. Happy flying.

Aircraft NEVER take-off with full flaps. 1/4 to 1/2 at most. Too much drag. Bummer about the dead elevator, but the crash is not the servo's fault as I did not see you do a control surface check before take-off, ESPECIALLY since you were already having servo issues. I do a surface check before EVERY flight for proper operation and direction. Good habit to assume. It doesn't matter how well the plane worked the day before. ALWAYS go through that checklist before every flight and never get casual about it. At least it is just a toy model and not the real thing. I've heard/read too many related horror stories over the years of this kind of thing happening for real with full size aircraft. Those really woke me up to proper procedure. Always alert! Happy flying!

@@skyhighmediasolutions891 I saw no up or down elevator from the point he plugged it in to the point of crashing. Use the playback speed option of KZbin and watch it in 1/4 speed. No up or down elevator motion. I'm watching on a 40-inch screen and see it quite clearly. Elevator never moved. Still pilot error because one should always do a control check first before applying throttle. That's how I was taught anyway.

Nate- hoping you read this comment! I have the larger version of this FMS Super Cub that i bought from fair RC. i have the EXACT undiagnosed issue with my plane as well, however when my servos glitch, i am able to catch it and thus have not experienced a full crash on pavement like you did. i purchased mine in august, so not too long ago, prob the same assembly run. but on my maiden i experienced full control loss that i blamed myself for. but in later flights on different days with DIFFERENT receivers as a test bed, i noticed the plane will randomly lose full flight controls for a brief period on the FIRST flight of the day. all flights after are totally normal. it's almost like the first hit of voltage when going to full power leads the REFLEX to have a freakout. here is what happens: my setup: Futaba 8FGS FASST with Futaba R617FS RX w/ included REFLEX FMS gyro (have also tried with Orange and other Futaba RXs) flight 1: throttle up and will occasionally experience full control loss IF i use full power - the throttle however stays "connected" which is what leads me to believe the REFLEX is to blame. IE: i lose controls on takeoff run but throttle stays connected, so i can safely bring it to a halt in the grass, but cannot steer or do anything until i go to idle and let it sit for a bit, then controls come back to life. but the whole time i sit there i have complete control over the throttle! weird right? flights after 1: plane flies fine for the rest of the day- no matter what setting the reflex switch is in! --- i believe either the reflex unit is to blame OR possible the servos, but because i am always able to "restore" control and have the plane fly fine for the rest of the day- it leads me to believe the Reflex has an error in it. To further my evidence, when i switch the reflex to "bypass" - it seems to mitigate this issue. i have yet to REMOVE the reflex unit and try just an "old school" set up with my FASST rx only- but i will let you know what i find... i can safely rule out the radio as this set up has never given me any issues in over a decade of use. and its actually the same RX i took out of a working model with no issues. But seeing your video update on this same plane really makes me concerned about the reflex being an achilles heel to an otherwise wonderful flying model. I am legit afraid to fly this model due to the brief loss of control! i am positive this is what is happening with yours too. let me know what you find, and i will definitely be staying tuned to your channel for updates. IF anyone else has a super cub from ~august 2022-now i'd love to know if you have similar issues to what you see in Nate's video here!

It stinks when we lose an aircraft due to manufacturing defects or poor quality control. I personally have been having major difficulties with Horizon Hobby for the carbon rods on the front of a fuselage NOT being glued in to motor mounts, resulting in the complete separation of the cowling, motor/propeller and magnetic battery hatch cover in flight on a brand new Turbo Timber Evolution. they did send a partial fuselage with out the main parts, cowling with lights, Motor, propeller with shaft nut and the battery hatch cover. after many emails I've not heard back. I have spent a lot of money on their products over the years but it's starting to seem like customers are not that important as the say. I hope i'm incorrect on this and they make it right.

Now just imagine if this was one of those giant scale balsa built up planes that had even more expensive gear inside and it has a flakey servo or connection. You do a bunch of testing and are sure it's going to work but it doesn't. It's completely demoralizing. You know you checked it but it starts working again and you feel confident that is good to go. I think the lesson here is to determine the exact original cause for the servo not working. If you can definitively pin point what caused the original problem, you can then proceed to repair or replace as required. The sheer amount of motivation you had to fly that bad boy on the day you received can be quite overwhelming. Just be glad it's not a super expensive one. And kudos to the wife for leaving you alone for your hour of reflection.

No one with a big balsa plane would even consider taking of with a servo that you can't trust. It would be replaced before take off. If it has happened once it WILL happen again.

The only way to guarantee we won't crash, is to not fly. I need to go through my UMX Pitts, as I had an aileron problem right after take-off, causing it to suddenly roll. I'd had it happen once before, but I was already in the air, and was able to land safely with the other aileron correcting. This time, though, I wasn't yet high enough to have time or space to correct. It's just part of the hobby.

That sucks! My E-flite Extra had a failed in flight last week. Luckily I was in a shallow left Bank and it cleared the marsh and crashed in a retention pond. I guess this proves that even birds can die in flight.

In my opinion and it's just an opinion, I don't think you had a chance to recover from a straight up take off and stall like that. Bad servo or not. Not sure why you would maiden a plane with full flaps. I'm guessing you didn't mix in any elevator with flaps either. You should only be trying flaps way up high to see how the plane reacts so you have time to recover. You may have a bad servo, I don't know but if that is true you still made a mistake and I hope you learn from it.

With flight stabilisation like Spektrum SAFE, it's essential to check the responses are set up correctly prior to maiden flight. In other words, the receiver responses are opposite to the stick inputs. You said you had the stabiliser on prior to take off, which in my experience isn't a good idea as it tries to keep the aircraft level when you need it to climb (steeply). Looking at the crash, I've got a theory that the elevator response was possibly set up the wrong way round, which isn't going to end well. Just an armchair theory, but worth considering. Excellent channel which has probably brought a lot of new people to the hobby. Sorry about the crash, but if you're not crashing, you're not flying!

When i zoom into the plane at peak nose up, just before it decides to flip and go say hello to the tarmac, your elevator appears level. Your flaps are 90 degrees down to the wing however. Not sure it was an elevator servo that caused this.

I noticed this as well. It may not have happened exactly as described in this video because I filmed my explanation before getting the privilege of watching the crash. I believe the climb/ fall was more due to the flaps, however I am still 100% sure I had no elevator control as it was acting up a little before take off and still has the same tendencies after this crash. Hopefully I can clear this up a bit with a follow up of some kind 👍😁😎⚓️

This looks very much like a re-make of the old Parkzone Sport Cub that was sold several years ago but now with a landing gear upgrade. That said, the Sport Cub is still one of my favorite "go to" airplanes so I think this will be a good product for anyone who enjoys some leisurely flying to consider. I would recommend buying the plug and play version and would install a Lemon Rx stabilized receiver. This plane really doesn't need all the SAFE functionality for anyone with skills above a beginner to successfully fly. Sorry about your problem Nate but I think you ran into a programming issue or a bad servo. Hard to overcome that once you are in the air. Like taking off in a full scale airplane with a gust lock that wasn't removed. Not many options once you are airborne.

That is my go to plane too. I still fly my Old Parkzone Red and White Sport Cub S2 except it has a .10 and a 45 amp esc in place of the old 480 and 18 amp esc. I have been flying on both 3 and 4s for years now. It will almost jump into the air on 4s. I thought the same as you when I saw the FMS plane. A remake of the Parkzone. New molds are expensive I guess.

Fmsare usually pretty good to be fair. Only servos I've had go slightly wrong was an eachine 400mm corsair which kept failing mid flight, and a arrows rudder on a p47 which just didn't sound right but worked OK in another plane when I swapped it. Its an interesting hobby hey?! 😆

Oooooo. Good stall! Sucks! But that is the hobby. I worked on a scratch built Telemaster for months only to have a servo failure on the elevator and it turned into a pile of balsa and covering! Even on the ground the servo worked, but the RC gods decided I needed to be humbled by a crash. Addendum: it is not about if you will crash, it’s about “when…” gives you a perspective on fate…. Was a good life lesson for my two boys. What goes up must come down… sometimes not in a pretty manner!

So now you learned if a servo fails or shows any issues it's best to just swap it out. I keep a good supply of servos hand to swap them out. Especially on a new plane. Any hint of faulty servo change it. Use it on something else that's not critical. RC car boat whatever.

Great video from you both. Love your bold faith in our Lord! Was it the maiden flight? If so, I would recommend no flaps and gyro assistance switched off in order to trim the aircraft properly and also to note any unusual tendencies. If it wasn't the maiden, then I'm sorry for your bad experience. There isn't a lot you can do with a stuck elevator except keep the power on and use the rudder (no ailerons) to help stabilize it hopefully into a falling leaf maneuver. Either way it would be a crash.

Now folks this is not the plane its not the pilot its just rcing, it happens. Want some advise, start with a self built foamy and build three and you will probably crash all three in a few weeks but the electronics are reusable and foam is super cheap. If you learn to fly self built no gyro planes you will be much better off imo than learning on gyro and then trying to turn it off. Anyway any given day could spell the last for a plane so dont spend big till you have some stick skills, a study showed that you about double your hand eye coordination (spacific to rc control unfortunately) in the first season so your half as fast as an amateur already so dont waste money this is actually a very hard thing to master
