Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. That’s because Europeans have music and art in their schools and are trained in classical, jazz, folk and rock. According to my Dutch friend, they are exposed to this at an early age. European progressive and symphonic metal are due to this training. Most can also speak more than language.

The keyboard stand looks like it could be used for pyro! Jay & Amber, well, that stopped you in your tracks! "What the ...." "You're kidding me?", from loud to soft, so many different colours in her voice, to fit the mood exactly. Amber floating away in the interlude, Nightwish Army waiting... "OMG", "She's incredible", "Something else". Yep, yep, yep, you got it! Floor singing "Hey, Hey, Hey!" woke you up a bit :-) Did that seem like 10 minutes? The lighting, pyro, video are done by a team that have been with them for years, collectively known as "Crewish", they really are a big part of the band. They even have their own cover tracks, Nightwish allowing them to keep the income, how is that for support from your own band, in these difficult times?

It's called symphonic metal (subgenre). If you are blown away, you should also listen to EPICA, the best symphonic metal band alongside Nightwish. Welcome to your first Floorgasm. Her name is Floor Jansen. She’s a goddess among men. Amy Lee from Evanescence is a Demi-God, but Floor is a flat out Goddess. Nightwish is an amazing blend of metal and a sort of operatic singing style, but as you heard, Floor can belt like no one else. It’s like a kind of medieval metal heh. Either way, they sound amazing live, and I’ve never been disappointed by a live performance by them. If you are interested in hearing Floor outside of Nightwish, where it’s just her voice you can focus on, look up the duet of Phantom of the Opera she did with a man named Henk. He is one of her idols, and he did Phantom of the opera for a long time on stage. Growing up, Floor always wanted to be up there singing the duet with him. She finally got her chance on a show from overseas. If you just look up “Floor Henk Phantom”, it should be the first result. You won’t be disappointed as Henk has an incredibly deep, resounding voice and is very much an incredible vocalist in his own right. They play off each other so perfectly though and you can tell they’re having a blast. It’s well worth your time to check out.

The duet of "Phantom of the Opera" is from a Dutch TV show called "Beste Zangers" (= best singers), where singers of different genres assemble at Ibiza island to perform a special song for one colleague in the centre spotlight of that evening. It either can be a special cover of a personal song, or a song with a special meaning for that person. It's no competion. Both Floor Jansen (pronounce: Yahnsen) and Henk Poort were participating in 2019. You 'll be thrilled to check this out and also discover Floor's versatility. She is the best vocalist of this era.

This was the 13th song in a 16 song set, if I recall correctly and she had been singing for over an hour before tackling this song. That is how powerful her voice is and how talented she is with her vocal choices. You need real pipes to pull that off. She also wasn't officially part of the band yet...she was covering for Annette who was hospitalized. She learned the set in just 48 hours.

@HarukoZ001 Not entirely correct, but that’s the gist of it. She was invited to NW in (I believe) October 2012, to cover for Anette Olzon, who fell ill during a tour. At that time she more or less had to learn the whole set in 48-ish hours (there’s a separate video about that with a similar title; worth a watch too!). This performance is from (I believe) August 2013, a live concert at the Wacken Festival. She had been with the band for approx. 10 months by then. By that time she had more or less (rather more than less) picked up all the parts and made them “her own”. Not in the sense that they are hers and hers only, but in the sense that she can play with the material as she pleases. For those new to NW and liking it, just type “Wacken 2013” into the KZbin search bar and watch the complete concert. You will enjoy it. E.g. the last 2 songs right after this one are equally good in their own right, even though they’re totally different, and maybe not as epic as this one. Have fun!

@@nicod1361 I 100% support Floor’s solo project stuff. And I agree, it’s amazing as well. But it’s a bit odd to promote her solo stuff so heavy handedly to someone who commented about the over all experience of Nightwish’s music and not specifically Floors vocals. By no means am I suggesting you stop promoting her solo stuff (I do it too), but tailor the suggestion for the individual. Don’t neglect to promote additional NW songs to someone that commented about the band’s music (and Tuomas’s composition style specifically).

I was so impressed & moved by this, after I saw it I went immediately to Ticketmaster in hopes I could see them live. Yes, based on one video clip. (Not knowing it'd be slim chance as they're from Finland) But wouldn't ya know it, the show was last night in Washington DC. I was right in the front. The whole show was epic and magical. They are on tour right now, if you get the opportunity to see them, please do it. It's an experience you'll never forget.

Yeah. I felt the same way..... been listening to metal since black sabbath.... don't know how this isn't arena worthy here in the states.... but the ua music industry has pigeon holed metal into a very narrow space..... such a shame since they've been around since the mid 90's

Floor Jansen is their third singer....the others were Tarja Turunen ( more operatic) and Anette Olzon ( more pop/rock ) but both were great on the albums they made with the band.. but Floor Jansen does every vocal style there is.

Of all the people I have seen react to this song YOU TWO REALLY GET IT! And you got it right away. It took me about 4 times through before I even knew what I was watching. Yes, Floor is a goddess, the goddess, the metal queen. BUT, as you noticed the entire band is PHENOMENAL! I recommend you familiarize yourself with their music and watch the Wacken 2013 performance. It is historic in my opinion. Thank you for showing such appreciation for the quality that Nightwish brings to the stage!

His founder is Mark Jansen, former guitarist of After Forever, 1st band of Floor Jansen. Epica's singer is the stunning Simone Simons, one of Floor's best friends. Welcome to the Nightwish Army - you're among friends, and you're about to embark on a fantastic journey. Every musician in this outfit is world-class. And you haven't heard all of them. Tuomas Holopainen is arguably the best composer of this era. Some call him the Metal Mozart, but he is beyond that - you can hear the influences of Sibelius, Nielsen and Ralph Vaughn Williams in his work. Tuomas is above all else a poet. He is a very learned man and he has a fierce thirst for acquiring comprehension. Both Tuomas and Floor have said that they are "high sensitives". I believe that they are in fact empaths, and that is not an easy existence for anyone so cursed and blessed. You feel the best and the worst of everything from everyone unless you develop a strong enough filter to allow you to survive day to day. This is one of the things that make Tuomas' compositions so hard-hitting, so epic. Tuomas feels so deeply of the things of this world, and this world has not always been kind to him. His genius and his art is that he can share his experiences with us. Now Floor - Floor is a world-class, high function, full duplex empath - in other words, she sends AND receives. THAT's how she sings her self, her heart and her soul right into ours, and she does it whether it's a live performance or not. This is her super power. The audience is hers every time she performs. If she does not make you cry, if she does not give you chills and goosebumps, then you have no soul. Floor and Nightwish light you up in the best possible way. Few others do, and it's obvious.

And THE JOURNEY has begun! My two favourite youtube reactors has FINALLY got to Nightwish! And there is NO way back. Floor Jansen is one of the best female singers - ever. She sings like this, but she also growls as a metal goddess - hopefully you'll get there. And the rest of the band is on a completely different level than most musicians. They are so talented. And Toumas is just...a genius! I often wish I could go back in time and re-live my first Nightwish experience - like you did just now. Can't wait to see your reactions to more Nightwish songs! I was aware of this band, have seen a couple of live videos, and remember thinking they were pretty good, but this was incredible...Amber, this may be the most eloquent and dead on you been in your reaction comments yet. When you said "siren", I pointed at the screen, like, "Yes. That." Staggering performance. She is amazing because she is so powerful, but can still convey vulnerability. I'm not sure I've ever seen that done that well before...
