OMG! I am originally from Hong Kong, and this is fascinating. I have never been to Kowloon Walled City myself, but I've seen other slums, and the designers really paid attention to detail. I planned a trip to the mysterious walled city when I was a teen but was too frightened and only got as far as the last train station near it. One of my many regrets in life not visiting it when it was still there. In the middle was a Christian missionary who used really graphic imagery to scare people off drugs and she would visit the local schools and put the literal fear of God into people. This arcade looks amazing but sadly like sop many amazing places in Japan, has since closed sadly.

Japan seems to be fascinated by Kowloon. For example, Shenmue II featured Kowloon. One of the most important cult games in Japan is Kowloon's Gate... Not sure about anime, but in videogames Kowloon has been the blank of cyberpunk games and things similar to that.
