A few months ago I was walking my dog in the (relatively) cool of night in a park in North Dallas. It was very dark, but I knew every foot of the wide-open area beyond the ball parks, so I did not bother to turn turn on my flashlight. Suddenly my dog stopped with a jerk and froze. I turned on the light to see a very large coyote a few feet away. I turned on the brightest strobe feature of the light and kept it on the coyote's eyes as it circled us and made passes at the dog. After a few minutes it gave up and ran off. The animal control chief I spoke to the next day said that she thinks she knows the animal that I encountered, and that it has been taking dogs along the areas near the creek that borders the park. A pocket flashlight is not much of a defense, but I am glad I had it. As far as the poor animal in the video, I was instantly reminded that in my youth we referred to rabies as "lockjaw."

@Twilighterfn1 This is the face of a rabid animal. The facial expressions made by rabid animals are often used as templates for monsters in horror movies as we instinctively sense that its just *wrong*. If you ever see an animal stumbling about showing its teeth like this and you dont have a gun, gtfo as fast as you can, get behind something the animal cant get thru. Even something the size of a raccoon or skunk with furious rabies will relentlessly go after another being it sees to attack.
@garmmermibe53974 ай бұрын
It effectively is possessed. Rabies takes control of one's mind in ways that almost seem like they came straight out of a sci-fi horror story. Once the rabies takes hold, it usually raises the aggression of the animal but it also dulls their intuitions and puts them in a constant state of fear by inducing delusions and hallucinations, which makes that raised agression even worse as the animal is encouraged to unleash it. It usually destroys an animal's ability to solidly recognize anything other than water. And the only reason the rabies allows the animal to recognize water is so that it can fear the water as rabies makes you hydrophobic and will make you gag and wretch if you try to drink since the water would wash away the "foam at the mouth" that is carrying the rabies. The rabies doesn't want that foam to be washed away since rabies has a nearly 100 percent lethality rate and usually kills in weeks or even days. So it needs to jump to a new host before the current one dies. It actually is eerily close to being possessed by a demon. The wretching, convulsions, the delusions and snarling, it all is pretty much staple "possessed by a demon" behavior. And that's probably because earlier cases of rabies were pinned as possession. That is to say, the idea of possession was modeled after rabies.

Like others have said, this coyote actually had rabies. At around 40 seconds you can see him attempting to swallow -- something the rabies virus prevents you from doing properly. The "hydrophobia" people and some animals experience when suffering from rabies isn't actually hydrophobia, since they don't fear the water or drinking it -- it's just that they literally don't have the ability to swallow because of how the rabies virus affects their nervous system and muscle control, especially when facing liquid stimuli like water. This inability to swallow is why animals and people with rabies often drool excessively and foam at the mouth. The "kick" the coyote gave, in addition to the open jaws and baring his teeth, are muscle spasms caused by the rabies. The severity of the spasms means he didn't live long after this. Hopefully someone found him and ended it before he died of thirst or respiratory paralysis.

@blubushie3 жыл бұрын
@@zerotodona1495 My point was that no living thing should suffer. I understand that the coyote is a danger with rabies - I just specifically pointed out why the coyote should be put down because I (someone who works with wildlife) have seen too many animals suffer because someone didn't want to be the one responsible for killing it. One instance was a woman who knew a rabid fox was hanging around her property (at that point he'd begun dragging his hind legs.) She refused to call us for two weeks, and we weren't able to locate the fox until, finally, a neighbor called us instead because he suspected she hadn't. The poor thing was mangled from biting at its own limbs. We had to put it down on the property because there was no use in attempting to capture him and take him back for euthanasia. She refused to call because she knew that we'd euthanize him, and she didn't want to be the one responsible for his death via calling us, so instead the poor thing suffered and mutilated itself for two weeks until we located him and euthanized him.

For anyone wondering why that coyote looks straight out of a nightmare, it’s because it hasn’t been able to feed or drink because of its obvious (thanks to the comment section) bad case of rabies, most coyotes are scared of humans unless backed into a corner, they go after anything smaller than them usually. Rabies is a hell of a disease that has no cure and can affect humans also, I would recommend a mercy shot aimed right behind its front paw/arm pit. This is how hunters shoot game so that it goes down as fast a possible, if you get it right it goes through the lungs and the heart, I know it sounds fucked up but no way is it more fucked up than the state the coyote is/was in. Lesson: if you see an animal acting strange, for example getting close and abnormally agressive, it might have rabies and should be put down, do NOT let it scratch you or bite you, rabies kills humans too and it has no cure.
@SilverScaleMA3 жыл бұрын
Well technically there is treatment and is fully preventable before symptoms show in humans. Even after symptoms begin showing there is a form of treatment that basically requires putting the patient in a coma and artificially maintaining vital organ function so the patients immune system has a chance to fight off the infection on its own. So far at least 14 people have survived full symtom rabies using that technique but it still has a very high mortality rate even with the treatment (something like 20-30% chance of survival with the coma if it is started early enough). But for animals it is always fatal unless they have been vaccinated and the best thing that can be done for them once symptoms start showing is to put them down as humanely as possible.
@andiamador71563 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It should not be against the law to shoot a rabid animal, and I am sure it is unlawful for civilians to do so in some places. It isn't against the law where I live. But they are dangerous to other animals and to people in the potential of giving them rabies, and a rabid animal is suffering so very bad. It is the most humane thing to do. And then it should be reported and the animal collected in order to confirm the case and inform people in the area. If I remember what I have heard, the animal shouldn't be shot in the head because the brain is examined for diagnosis and confirmation. I might not recall correctly, or they may have other determinants they use nowadays.
@SilverScaleMA3 жыл бұрын
@@andiamador7156 actually in all states in the USA you will not be fined if you shoot an animal and it is confirmed to have rabies, same goes with CWD (there are some exceptions like if you live in a city or suburb where a shot could accidentally hurt someone else unintentionally). You will however get in a lot of trouble if you shoot the animal and dispose of it yourself because of the possibility of disease spread. Basically if it obvious the animal is infected and you have the ability to safely put it down it is better to shoot first then report, especially if your family and animals are at immediate risk. If you can't safely take down the animal the police should be called immediately (not all animal control have guns and the police will redirect the report to whoever is best suited be it AC or park rangers). And yes, rabies infected animals should always be killed via lung and/heart shot as head and spine shots can risk causing unintentional infection to the area and to effectively test for rabies they ideally need brain tissue. I believe they can also test using saliva and spinal fluid but it is harder to get a clear reading and can give a false negative.
@andiamador71563 жыл бұрын
@@SilverScaleMA City or suburb is what I was thinking about. A lot of people around and likely a lot of pets around too, in those settings. I guess police can be summoned fairly quickly in those locations, but still... And there are plenty of animals that can carry rabies that like cities and suburbs for the scavenging opportunities. I have an aunt that told me that she was exposed to a rabid dog, and had to get long needle shots into her stomach, when she was a young child. That would have been in the mid 1950's or so. I don't know if they still do that to people who have been exposed. I guess I could look that up, but I am still pretty creeped out by the idea fifty years after hearing her tell it to me when I was a young child.

Clearly you a re not a vet, but I am sure you are a avid Animal Channel Supporter. Which is great, but educate YOURSELF before you open your mouth to defend another. This animal doesn't "Kick the Glass" lol it is reacting to it's own reflection. It smells food (I don't mean chips and pop). It wants to eat your Dog, Your Baby and You. It is a WILD ANIMAL for fuck sakes, not a Rabid Coyote. It doesn't have Mange (Look that up too because you probably don't know what it is 🙄) nor does it have the tell tail "Froth" on its gum line. @@Isokatmydydecsf That isn't true at all. Rabies attacks the central nervous system and causes a general sense of "excitement." That means hyper-awareness and perceptiveness, not aggression. An animal with rabies doesn't get some irresistible urge to kill, it gets tortured inside its own body as its brain and sometimes spine swell up and it dehydrates to death. That coyote isn't angry, it's terrified and reacting exactly like any predator does when it feels backed into a corner. One key symptom of rabies, which leads to a deathly fear of water and severe dehydration, is that it paralyzes the muscles in the throat. This is why animals with rabies tend to drool a lot (which benefits the virus, since it spreads through spit), it's just too painful to swallow. That's probably why it never closes its mouth, it hurts it too much not to hang it open.

It's always sad to see such a beautiful, smart animal turn out like this. Rabies, CWD and even mange are such terrible diseases. I agree, the poor thing should be put out before the can hurt anyone/thing or suffer any more

I was like " he's seeing him in the glass but it's strange. I'm unconfortable, there is something wrong." Then i see the comments and i realise, i 've never seen an animal with rabbies, we don't have it anymore in France. Thanks, i learn a lot.

You do, just hidden. Rabies will never really go away until the land is scorched and water boiled away. It lays dorment for decades at a time in the ground until anything digs it up and has been with us for thousands of years and to this day, is still one of the most fatal things a person or animal can get besides a bullet to the brain and spinal column

Some animals with rabies will twitch, stumble, foam at the mouth and have muscle spasm/tiks.
