I call mine a sled. I got the name from another woodworker. I added an oak stick that fits in the miter slot. Then, like you did, I cut one long edge so it just fits against the sawblade. I trimmed the other long edge so it fits in the miter slot on my router table. It just fits against a 1/2" straight router bit. I can use it for jointing.

I've been using mdf but also with the use of toggle clamps to hold the piece down. I should try double sided tape though, seems much easier to use that when cutting various sizes of work pieces. Hand planes and a straight edge. You can also cut the boards in two and see if you can get away with less stock material that way and then glue them back together if you're not worried about grain

Thank you I'm new to wood working and I have not yet had a successful glue up that I doesnt need a lot of sanding

That also depends a lot on how you clamp. Moderate pressure, clamping cauls, the right clamps, the right amount of glue. Stumpy probably has tips on that but there are definitely a whole slew of videos out there on dimensioning lumber as well as gluing up panels.

@StumpyNubs5 жыл бұрын
If that leg stock comes free mid cut, it can kick back at you pretty hard. I want good, reliable double sided tape. I use the PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) wood turners tape. It's pricey, but reliable. Here's some: amzn.to/2UL4DSY Some carpet tapes can work too, as long as they aren't too gummy.

What brand and what kind of double-sided tape do you use? I see this mentioned everywhere online but nobody tells you what double-sided tape or where they buy?
@socalboomer5 жыл бұрын
3M stuff from your local office supply or big-box store. Doesn't need to be permanent (shouldn't be permanent) - just holding it while you cut.
@markbryan99895 жыл бұрын
Or you could just use painters tape. One on the "jig" and the other on the work piece. Then contact glue on one and activator on the other. Removing it from the jig and work piece will be much easier than double sided tape.
@StumpyNubs5 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree with both MIke and Mark. (Sorry Mike and Mark.) The painter's tape w/super glue idea is good for some uses. But the bond is too weak for other uses, like this one. If that leg stock comes free mid cut, it can kick back at you pretty hard. I want good, reliable double sided tape. I use the kind PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) wood turners use. It's pricey, but reliable. Here's some: amzn.to/2UL4DSY Some carpet tapes can work too, as long as they aren't too gummy. Again, the blue tape/super glue, and other weaker tapes are useful in many other situations. But not for when failure can cause injury. Really, it pays to have several options on hand. Maybe I'll do a video about it :)
@David_K_Dickson5 жыл бұрын
@@StumpyNubs I respectfully disagree with you, Stumpy Nubs, (sorry James) and I would like to refer you to this video, where Ben Crowe of Crimson Custom Guitars uses masking tape and superglue to hold two pieces of wood together to go through a thickness planer. I respectfully suggest that the lateral forces generated by the thickness planer greatly exceeds those generated by a table saw. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJSXommogrqNkLM Also, if you look at Ben's original video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5OZgaaPaciarck) you will see him burnishing the masking tape to the wood, which strengthens the lateral bond even further, and I suggest that it is lateral strength that we should be considering here. Just my penny's worth, and each one of us is responsible for our own safety - if it doesn't feel right, don't do it.
@StumpyNubs5 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter what you do to it, the tape is only as strong as the adhesive on it. There's a reason blue tape is preferred by painters, the adhesive bond is weak, so it comes off easily. If you want to feed that through a thickness planer, you are free to do so. And you may be fine since the feed rollers are likely to prevent a failed bond from sending anything shooting back at you. But I would hesitate to publicly suggest anyone feed it through a table saw, because unlike a thickness planer, a failure at the table saw is far more likely to seriously injure the user. I take no chances when a table saw is involved.
