Yes, pounded sassafrass leaves. Mostly used in 'winter' gumbo when okra isn't available. This was something used by the local NA tribes.

as a certified cajun with Boudreaux bloodlines, i can attest that Gumbo File (fee lay) is something that some choose to dash on top of their gumbo, but it is not a key ingredient during the cooking process. But to each their own, and if you cook your gumbo with the file, more power to you, i'm not judging, but my ancestors might cutting some side eye.

Gumbo filé is made from sassafras root, it's used to thicken your gumbo if you want it like that. It's pretty common for people to top their bowls with a sprinkle of filé before serving

The gumbo "powder" is Gumbo File(pronounced fee-lay) and it is used in place of okra as a thickener. You need very little of it to thicken a pot of gumbo. I can't believe a Canadian has to fill you in on something like this! 😉

The "gumbo powder" is gumbo file( pronounced filet like filet of fish). It's a traditionally made from sassafras root and is used as a post cook thickener... if your rue doesn't do it job properly... or it lacks the okra used in some gumbos. *I'm a born, breed, and well versed Cajun boy. Lol Filé (pronounced fee lay) powder is for gumbo but it is for thickening. Filé is made from sassafras leaves so Use it sparingly! Alternatively you could use okra to thicken your gumbo (we normally use okra)
