So far, I’m happiest with this among all your videos. I love the use of imagination to solve unusual problems. I’ve wanted to see burls sawn too. I wonder why nobody ever saws veneer? If that burl was mine I wouldn’t even pause one minute; veneer it would be. I saw veneer on my shop bandsaw, but I don’t have a sawmill, so I’m just doing small stuff. Wood like that is just begging to be sawn into veneer.
@NorthwestSawyer5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Paul. I don’t think this burl would have been stable enough to be sawn into veneer. With the way the grain swirls, I think it would just fall apart.

I’ve always wanted to get into pen turning but time is going by too fast now and don’t know if I’ll ever get the chance so I’ll just pass the lumber off to someone that can do something great with it. I would have suggested to the owner that they cut about 5-6" off the "top" in one cut. That piece would make a nice bowl. Then your sides would be flatter? straighter? for slabs with another bowl for finishing. Wood turners will pay good $ for those pieces. It all came out beautiful. Great job.

I do not own a sawmill nor have I ever owned one but I'm going to guess that you might need a new blade. I'm just guesstimating as I am uneducated in sawmill knowledge. The cut looked a little rough to me although they do not call it rough cut for nothing but that seems excessive. Am I Rome in my assumption? It was easier than expected because you have the right tools. That is an awesome looking sawmill and out of all of the pages I've subscribed to there are like 4 of the people I subscribe to have sawmills. Yours is by far the best. Nice machine good choice. I guess that comes with your edumacation : D
@NorthwestSawyer5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Todd. The reason the cut may have looked so rough is the type of wood being sawn. A burl has the grain pattern running in every direction, unlike a normal log where you are only sawing against the grain. It really wasn’t too rough and it took minimal effort to sand it smooth. This wood was also very dry which tends to exaggerate the saw marks. I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel and thank you for the comment.

I have loved wood in a uncanny way, knowing fairly young that was what I really wanted to do. I know that at age eleven I tried to get a job in the woods for a man who cut cedar shakes and skidded the timber by what ever means to try to remove. After a long period of time he hired me to fire me thing and from then on he begged me to come with him. My step dad and him never saw eye to eye and it hurt my relationship for work bad, real bad. In fact enough to make me challenge my dad... my dad stood six foot seven, and weighed three seventy five, not one once of fat. He tagged me a few times but I remembered "Aesop's Fables" and I took the giant down and earned his respect. I was twelve I think when that happened.... I'm 72 now and my step dad was about or close to forty. Logging or milling being in my blood for that long would make you think that I should of got tired of it but I would take a job like that now if I could. Only mistake you made on that is cutting all the wood without checking for rot or unpleasant marks that you may of turned the log in proper fashion. I wouldn't call those burls as the would doesn't have the grains that twist and roll to make unique designs like some table tops or veneered guitar tops. Actually if I tried to list the ways I have seen wood used then I would need months of time and a very different crowd of people to want to listen to blithering. I like your videos. Always count on good camera work. I hate a lot of panning so quick that my eyes try involuntarily causing upset stomach and a host of things. I don't know why when you watch a video that the editor of the video will play a mile long prelog and then crash in with loud music. Even if I have watched that channel for a long time, I unsubscribe right then and there. I am too old for loud vulgar rap or just bad sound tracking. Next convention you go to spread the word that many viewers really just don't care for that. KZbin is the new free tv for the public as subscribed channels on tv are way off the charts with costs per month and repeats. I got to quit writing books for response but it helps me personalize the channel. I get feed back from someone and I feel better about myself. Yes I wish that youtube in some form had been around the fifties. Each generation gets further apart from the last... sorry.... I will jump now, I did like this and have been a subscriber for a while now so your doing something right

It's such a easy cop out to attribute the power and beauty of nature to a sky fairy. Fire and lava shoots up from the earth....must be the volcano god. Lightning crackles through the sky.... must be the lightning god. Billions of light years of expanding space....must be a god. Do yourself a favor and study science and nature and thank your fictional god that humans long ago didn't buy into the lazy arrogant notion of a god and studied and experimented. Otherwise you'd still be living in mud huts killing, raping and torturing each other over which god was stronger and the most realist lol. Just study!! You know what, study other religions and see the similarities. They all have magic tricks, theirs is always the one true god, they all are invisible and unfalsifiable ( it means that you can't prove that they aren't there like bigfoot and garden gnomes) , you aren't allowed to question them, require faith, that science always proves that their god is the real god, they all require faith and a special person to tell interpret the real meanings of their holy books..... the countless murder, rape and torture all in the name of every religion including Christianity!! It's disgusting!!
