As a long time HGV mechanic I have just two observations I hope will help while I have been enjoying following your journey. You are doing it all the right way, well done you and always follow your Dad's advice. So first off NEVER wear flip flops when working on heavy machinery. No matter how hot it is wear protective boots. Seriously a smashed foot can be very serious sh*t! And those 'weird' bolts holding the shock absorber bracket to the chassis? They are called 'Huckbolts' and while there are variations for different applications they are basically a threaded fixing that is permanently clamped and are far tighter than plain bolts and nuts. Used especially where flexing and vibration are an issue. Here in the UK Bombardier assemble all their train car sides and roofs with a Huckbolt system. Truck chassis used have the cross webs cold riveted and then plain bolts used for attaching brackets etc but if you check out the rest of the 'bolts' on your chassis they are 'Huckbolts'. The special tool to fix and release them isn't expensive and this film may be of interest? www.afshuck.net/en/Products/Fasteners/LockBolts/BobTail.html
@clifficus4 жыл бұрын
1chish Huckbolts, are actually NOT threaded, if you look closely you’ll see the they’re all separate little rings, meaning it’s impossible to place the nut on AND then screw it up, rings are there so that the nut slides on, the riveter grips the exposed rings and pulls whilst pushing the nut tight against the metal, then squeezing the nut tight to bite into the rings, a very high tech form of rivet, Ex Bombardier, Belfast NI 😃👍
@1chish4 жыл бұрын
@@clifficus Fair comment Sir. They are indeed not 'threaded' in the accepted sense that they do not rely on thread profile to achieve locking grip and my use of the term was not strictly correct. I was just trying to explain the different fittings used on truck chassis (bolts & nuts, cold rivets and Huckbolts but within 'Huckbolt' suppliers there different designs. I guess one might actually call them 'rivets'? Have to say when I was doing a project for Bombardier in Derby the assembly line used the term 'threaded'. @ 00:14 here is one being 'threaded' up to the shoulder before final fitting: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIrClXdmgriLqcU
@clifficus4 жыл бұрын
1chish I was maybe too quick to snap back, my only intention was to try and educate those who would assume that Huckbolts were actually nuts and bolts, whereby the more learned amongst us know better, Also, anyone who loves or rides a 675, is a man after my own heart, Ex Busa, stay safe, 😃👍

The little cone shaped spacers are actually the lock nuts, they suck to take out but go in easy. They make a special tool for removing them but it’s not needed to install. Anyway when you torque the axle nuts it compresses the cone around the stud and axle, this prevents the axle from pushing out while driving. Good work, just got my daycab delivered and it’s going to be a big project. My running and driving truck actually has a bad engine and the brakes are all seized. Know anyone down their with a good Detroit DD13 at a reasonable price?

Rusty, just a little advice...and I am sure you have already thought of this. After you put around a 1,000 miles on the Volvo go back and tighten every bolt you took off....especially the suspension. Just saying! Keeping the rubber on the pavement...know what I mean? And your Dad is right about replacing the U bolts on the driver side axle.

Just to help you here, don't tighten things as tight as you can. You really need to tighten them to spec the first time. If you over tighten something you will weaken it and it could fail. If you do not have a torque wrench you better get one asap. They are not too much money.

What size are those lugs? 33mm? What size square socket for the inside? always wanted tools for big truck wheels. Its hot as balls. If its hot in jacksonville you don't want to know how hot it is 5-6 hours south of there like where I live. If you want to get all the rust off the axles wipe off the oil and use phosphoric acid on it, Kleenstrip sells it at home depot green stuff prep and etch

If you can't find a cab I would take and get a complete shell so all you have to do is transfer everything from the other cab and the drivers seat should be common on your truck so try 1 to 4 uears older for the seat.
@markm00005 жыл бұрын
The problem is there’s so much crap on the old cab that was destroyed in the accident I don’t think the interior is salvageable.
@ArmandoRodriguez-qy2hu5 жыл бұрын
Rusty you should be able to take the dashboard out amd transfer that as it does have the trucks vin on it other wise you would have to have the Florida State Police Truck team inspect your work and reissue a new vin and that changesnthe year of the truck to 2019 so getting the dashboard out and set aside is key to this awesome rebuild as for the interior you can get that from the Volvo salvage guys in JACKSONVILLE
