I guess some people still haven’t figured out that Africa is a continent and not a country. It’s silly to be bothered by the statement “there are children starving in Africa”, I doubt that every country in that continent has a stable economy and doesn’t suffer from poverty. So, yes, there are children starving in the continent of Africa, there are children starving in the US, and there’s children starving on every country on earth. Go donate to a charity.

Don't remember the movie. But that was just to make her an easy target to the women surrounding the guy. They made lots of plotholes (dubious reactions to irrational actions). Chinese-culture-influenced movies always treated the main protagonist as a victim. While the "prince/princess" have to be someone from a rich family who see the main character for their personality. It's always like that. Tells you how much they value getting married to a good person who are rich (with rich in bold and underlined). Their communities always talk about wealth and comparing each other families (and peers) on who's kid is more successful. A lot of plastics between them. Everyone is two-faced-snake. Unless you are meeting with a person of Chinese descendant who has let go of their tradition, you're pretty much meeting 90% of the characters in this movie. Also, compare products of Chinese entertainment and other Asian cultures. The Chinese's side characters are always petty and envious people. Always. Only tells you how common it is to find petty & envious people around you in that culture.

Honestly, that guy probably truly embodied many asian guys. Thanks to complex but mixed cultures and traditions with a lot of emphasis on honor and machismo, there are many guys whose 1st instinct is to react exactly like this to a girl. Not because they truly care or know the girl, but because she is a girl they find attractive & fairytales have made them think that is all you need to win a girl. Whether this is problem in other parts of the world, I can't say but it is one i have encountered in Asia

Even though they changed the story from the book to this, It worked out great and made for a quicker set up than in the book. Though I miss the mysteries in the book surrounding the family.

That Singaporean auntie is Koh Cheng Mum, an iconic singaporean actress/comedian/radio dj starring in local favorites such as under one roof and living with lydia. Her voice, accent, and facial expressions give the movie an authentic singapore flavor in an otherwise asian american cast. The way she speaks, is the way Singaporeans speak. She is my aunt and we(by we i dont just mean my family, but singaporeans in general) are so proud of her.

I love the book Crazy Rich Asians. There are three books in this series. I wish they would make another movie on the second book and possibly third book combined. It would be so interesting if Kevin Kwan would write a book on the Grand Grandmother's life. Seemed to be a very interesting lady.
