Sure digital work spaces can be incredibly useful and flexible but real art is made through approaching your limitations and exploring what’s possible with different tools. Kevin Shiflett the negativity comes from the hype of this machine just being a sampler but it’s cool as shit and people need to shut the fuck up, not everything has to be a groundbreaking piece of technology
@picketf5 жыл бұрын
@@scrums4748 Some waldorf synths cost $4000+ and they are "just" pretty synths that sound nice. This machine is a groundbreaking piece of technology it combines the work of an interaction design research specialist with software developer that specializes in real-time audio, it is well documented and it is FREE. I suppose the free part is what irks most people. If this was a commercial product you'd have 2 groups of people the ones buying and the others really jelly, secretly wanting to own one but not being able to afford it. But since it's a very well documented project (even the 3D model of the case is included) anyone could just make it if they wanted to, but probably no one ever will, which put's everyone watching this video in group 1. Jelly as jelly can be, forever longing for one but inept to recreate it.
@scrums47485 жыл бұрын
@@picketf how is this groundbreaking its just put together well
@picketf5 жыл бұрын
@@scrums4748 because it preceeds research in a number of areas. Yamaha or Roland have an in house R&D team that occasionally make small increments to whatever instrument they are working on but they don't combine multiple research into one project (because that would be counterproductive from a financial perspective). Since this isn't a commercial product and all the software used is offered as GPL it's at a pretty optimized, largely bug free and not-much-can-be-improved state, also unheard of for today's standards. The groundbreaking part is combining interaction design with highly advanced real-time processing. In audio engineering it's pretty common to have advanced real-time tools that are highly complex but lack a comprehensive UI or even a well documented layer interface (if it is developed as a plugin) and really neat and minimalistic UI designs rarely ever have a complex underlying engine.

I am a software engineer. However: when making music, I like to avoid having to use software at all costs, because I lose track of what I want to create while being busy figuring out the right thing to click on or the right plugin or VST to install. Tired of that! My set up currently just includes a Zoom R16, a MOX6 and a Roland RD2000 and a pair of nice studio speakers. So an instrument such as this one might indeed be interesting, since there's not much software involved - in particular nothing, that requires me to deal with MacOS, Windows or the likes. Hence: nice instrument, even though it is just a sampler. Good work!

This looks like a good example of grad students trying to get into a doctoral program. They'll show it off at a few seminars and win some awards to stick on their résumé. Do this a few more times and they can land a job teaching other grad students to perpetuate the same delusion.

Sad but true, it will be available only for top tier musicians. Most succesful synths were relatively cheap and produced in large numbers.
@Meshica1118 жыл бұрын
BoxHead's Corner what are you talking about? I see so many things I can do with this. Nevermind me, if this existed when Pink Floyd were at their prime, could you imagine what they would have made?
@sixsides36318 жыл бұрын
Ariel Cruz You do realize these features are basic things that can be achieved with any studio grade daw, right? This is basic sampleing and editing, which is the key feature of this thing. Plug a Midi controller and a mic to your computer with a DAW, and you not only have a Collidoscope, but you are a couple steps away from haveing a basic home studio set up, without haveing a glorified, double sided, Edison plugin. And Pink Floyd's peak was how long ago? How is this relevant to what we need now? It's a novelty toy.
@Meshica1118 жыл бұрын
BoxHead's Corner I mean it's much more flexible having to be used like this thus more creative output being right then and there, what I meant by pink Floyd using it at their prime is that they aren't making any albums anymore but back when they were making meddle or dark side this would be much more accessible to the pure output that they'd want
@Meshica1118 жыл бұрын
Not only that but bands like tame impala would be able to use this for live shows
@SpeccyMan8 жыл бұрын
A copy of Steinberg's Padshop Pro (very reasonably priced IMO) and a MIDI controller keyboard would give you similar capabilities I reckon. There is also Granulator II (even more reasonably priced as it is a free Max For Live plugin) for any Ableton Live users out there. The hardware does look cool but if it isn't going to be sold as a product ...............
@stephenborntrager65428 жыл бұрын
I was thinking just that. PadShop can probably do more, actually. Unless this think can do key tracking and formant shaping. It does have a nice interface though. I get the feeling it's more of a student project to suit the tastes of it's creator.
