He's not denying the crime. He's saying it was set up to ensure he was easily identifiable. When it's done properly, the perpetrator is treated as a suspect and not an obviously guilty party. The very reason for it is to test the victim's testimony without influencing it.

This guy is an educated person, either a varsity graduate or a former law enforcement officer. There's no how he could utter all that legal jargon and the English generally with ease comprehension if he isn't from such a background. Unless he's a repeat offender who has been through numerous trials in court and got used to the jargon.
