Woke up to the flute-like singing of a common Potoo in the middle of my 1st night in a deep, dark, beautiful Ecuadorian rainforest back in ‘89. Locals called it “the Bird that Laughs at Man(-kind)” >> one of many great memories of a wonderful place & people!

No, they are not. they are beautiful, inoffensive, their singing varies from this roar, to a beautiful and melodic whistle, and they are wonderful to live among. I had the pleasure of live in a place that have a ton of these in the most variable species and it was almost magic. Each one has an unique tuning to their song and some even let me approach in a very friendly manner. Unfortunately we live in a world where a great amount of people are just willingly ignorant, they prefer believe in ridiculous legends like "if you hear one singing means someone in your family will die" or "this is a soul of a mother calling for her dead children". But in reality, Potoos, or Urutaus as they are originally named, are a remarkable and lovely species.

HERE HERE...!!! I have been in the avian field for nearly 30+yrs now. And have worked "hands on" with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey. And these birds along with other Nightjars such as Tawny Frogmouth's, Chuck-will's-widow, and Eastern Whip-poor-will are fascinating birds. They serve a great purpose of ridding us of the pest insects they feed upon. Every animal serves a purpose.

Please do your research thoroughly and respect all creatures, as they all have a role in their fragile ecosystems. (an ornithologist here)

Here in the United States we would have similar but smaller related birds. Such as; Eastern Whip-poor-will & Chuck-will's-widow which are in the Nightjar family. Hunting insects at night. They may seem creepy but they get rid of A LOT of pest insects.

Scariest bird? They are one of the cutests in the world. Have you seen vultures?
@kolorsoftherainbow4295 Жыл бұрын
As someone who works with birds of prey for a living, I’ve come to find that vultures are actually incredibly endearing and adorable birds; they are intelligent and sociable, and they LOVE puzzle feeders, shoelaces, and sunbathing! They are also a very diverse group appearance-wise, so, contrary to common expectation, there isn’t exactly a standard vulture “look.” Some species look more intimidating, some look like they’re wearing pantaloons, and some look like living art craft projects.
