After becoming a warrior, Graystripe mentored Brackenfur. While out in the forest, he was rescued by Silverstream, a RiverClan warrior, after falling through the icy river. The two often met in secret afterwards, and eventually started a relationship. Silverstream had his two kits, Featherkit and Stormkit, but died from blood loss while kitting, which devastated Graystripe. He decided to join RiverClan to be with his kits, but defected back to ThunderClan following his exile.
