I was at Walmart and I saw this 4" snake plant. It wasn't even in a pot. It was laying there roots all out waiting to die. I used to work there and I know they would throw it away. So I picked it up shoved it back into it's pot & bought it. When I got home I transplanted it. I named it "Lucky" cause it's lucky to be alive. It is very happy now. It has grown 2" & had a baby.

I love snake plants now... I used to look down on them as though they were the McDonald's fast food of the plant world... but have great appreciation for them now. One propagation tip that has helped me which I believe has made a difference. I find I have much better success rate and faster root development if I let the cuttings heal for a week before putting in water or soil. When I put them straight into water, many times the cut will get soft and start to rot. It takes some patience but I think it's worth letting the cut dry out a few days.

I was like you too,but now I have found out that it's such an easy going plant and refreshes the air in your home, I begin to appreciate it.

Thick leaved plants need to heal before being planted, if not then they will absorb the moisture and become soft and mushy and rot.

Perfect timing for this video…I just bought a medium size Sansevieria that was literally busting out of its pot with a new 2-leaf baby the same size...Now I know where to cut, and not to be afraid to cut! I refuse to call them snake plants because I have a phobia about snakes. 😳 They will always be Sansevieria to me. I also have a large Mother-in-Law’s Tongue. @@Patricia-uu6wo I’m fairly new to propagating too. But all I did was stick it into the soil and watered it every time the soil dried out. They need more water when they’re just a cutting. I am a Sanseviera and Hoya and orchid cactuses lover. I went to a nursery one day and they had a Whale Fin they were about to toss as she had a big circle of dry leaf in the middle as it froze during transportation. I got it for almost nothing... to thank me for saving her from the garbage can, she gave me a "baby" few weeks after... not she is about 2.5' high... in less than a year... a real beauty. I also have (besides 5 more species) a Moonshine that I have to separate as she is bursting her pot... I think I have something like 10-12 babies in it. I have Sanseviera for ever since my mom gave me one of hers when I was young and I never lost one... yet... when I moved very far away 25 years ago I had to give all my plants 😪 ... my Sanseviera was giganormous... I was heart broken to give them away but I was not able to bring them with me, sadly. I love your videos... and your cat 😊

I just bought a Moonshine today that was basically bursting out of its 5 inch pot. It already produced 2 pups and from what I could tell from just looking at it, it was made out of 4 initial cuttings crammed together into this tiny pot. When I got home I figured I'd let it acclimate to my room a little bit before I divide it, but I ended up dividing it immidiately, because I noticed some weird white powder leaking out of the bottom of the pot. I got a little concerned, cuz the good old internet told me it was a fungus, so I thoroughly washed the plant and treated it with some organic pesticides to prevent any infection and pest attacking it after the whole process. Anyways, in the end, I got 6 Moonshines for 10€ total with another tiny pup already in the making!

Can you bottom water these plants and if so how long do you leave it in the water because it seems like when I water my plants from the top they seem to get mushy I don't order my plants very often because of that

I need to do this with two of my whale fins. They both pupped and have grown larger than the mother plant. Gotta love a whale fin!

Hi. I have a whale fin plant that is not doing well. It has actually started to rotten. The problem is that it has babies on it growing. What should I do.

I just got a snake plant, it is quite young still I haven't repotted it from the nursery pot it came with, just watered when it arrived and haven't watered it since a week now and some leaves edges are turning brown and crispy. I don't remember if it came like that or it is because when it arrived I watered with tap water. I'm in the uk, tap water is good to drink here but is it good for plants? Any ideas why some of the leaves in my snake plant edges are turning brown please?

My snake plant cuttings took about 3-4 weeks to start rooting and I made sure to keep the water at only 1/2 inch full in the propagating container!

I'm about to separate my pot. It has do many. I've tried water propagating. Out of 9 clippings in February, I have 2 left. They get mushy and slimy. I clean the leaves and jar, spray peroxide on them. I'm using tap water that I let sit out for over 24 hrs. Any suggestions?? Just bought soil and perlite today. Repotting and dividing this weekend. Clipped another 3 leaves about a month ago, trying again. 3 try may be directly into soil. Have you tried propagating in spagnum moss?? I got some of that too

Great video! Could you please do an updated video showing the water propagation was successful or not? I'm curious to find out. Thanks

Mine are tall and always fall to the side, so I've tied them not tight, but enough to keep them upright. Why do they fall?

My whale fin is starting to die on me. I took it out of the soil and there are no rizones on these plants. There are only roots. But it is rotting around where the roots are. What should I do.

I've had 2 snake plants die on me. The first one I think I divided it wrong, and I might have overwatered it as well. It never looked healthy, and only got worse as time went on until it finally died. A couple years later, I thought I'd try my hand at it again, and this time I was much more careful in repotting it, and much more intentional about its watering schedule. I named him Harambe. He did really well, shooting up new growth. He had some dying leaves around the edge, but the one leaf in the middle looked really nice. However, as his name suggests, he met an untimely death. He had been sitting on my desk, and one of my friends reached to grab something on my desk and by bringing his elbow back, snapped Harambe's biggest, newest leaf right in half. I tried to splint it, but it didn't heal, and ultimately Harambe never recovered from that incident.

I left snake plant cuttings out awaiting til the end got calloused. I saw though that sap transpired from it and some parts were partially sunburned. Can this be saved? Can I cut the sunburned parts and water propagate it?

Hi I am from India. Always watch your video. I like it. Very informative with high speed. I usually propagate Snake plant through division or leaf cutting . Both are eásy.. leaf cutting grew faster in a wet soil in dark condition. Love your plants and green planters it looks very beautiful. Bye...

Thank you. I’m going to put my leaf cutting in soil, it seems to be a better method than water. Thanks for sharing

The roots of my snake plant are coming on top of the soil. The plant is doing good. It is neither droopy or dry. Does it mean i have to repot it ?

it's usually hard to propagate from a single leaf, especially in just soil

Can I cut a leaf that has developed a brown spot in the center of the leaf or should I do a full division and repotting? My drac. whitney has like 3 brown spots on the same plant and the spots feel wet to the touch (so I try not to touch them)

I just got a whale fin sanse from a friend but unlike what I saw from your video, the leaf has small roots and don't have a rhizome. Maybe it was not properly detached from the mother. I planted the leaf right away but I did not water it first. Will it survive? Well, I really hope so.
