Hey Mate. seems like a great efficient setup. Pallets to me look exactly as you described when you stopped worrying about their aesthetics: Rustic and kind of cool. I love the look to be honest. I've always had one slow compost going (wire mesh two sides and Pallet on the other). I'm currently at day 7 of my first Hot Berkely Compost pile. Reached 69° C the first few nights. Now settled to a cozy 51°C. Should cool down from here and in another 11 -15 days of turning the Eathworms can start moving in 😀

Ha, Yeah the brain kind of glitched on hearing that. Here in the second most southern state of Victoria in Australia 15 degrees C is getting cold. Most summers we will get into the mid to high 30's with the occasional 40's and the rarer 45+ degrees C which has you watching the sky's for smoke. I met a Canadian musician back in 2009 who had stepped on a plane in Canada at 45 degrees C below freezing and stepped off the plane in Melbourne 45 degrees C above with hot dry 100 km an hour gale force winds that felt like it was searing your skin. Kind of knocked him about a bit, - that was the day the air had an ominously bad vibe about it, a huge bush fires had started that took out towns and hundreds of lives lost, not as big as the most resent one but more loss of life I have been in Britain and they have a different heat - oddly a mere 22 degrees C there does feel warmer than it does here.

Huw, down in NW London our summers tend to be hotter and drier so composting needs to take account of the seasons. I find that building heaps in spring and September means that hot domposting occurs when air temperature is cooler so moisture is retained better. During summer, my immature compost goes into daleks with food scraps, comfrey and the like where it matures quickly without drying out and can then be stored in big builders bags (holes in bottom so worms can get in and out) which is a good way of retaining moisture in the compost during hot dry periods. Yes I do keep building new heaps in summer but spring has great first cuts of grass and September has potato and squash plants in abundance. I even let the berry cage grow wild this spring and pulled a third of a cubic metre of compostable material in late May from beneath cherry and plum tree and mixed in the raspberry canes. All the fruit did well, so it may not be atotally mad thing to do....

compost is king !!! the way I do it is the ww2 dig for victory method, of using 4 sticks to mark out a 4ft by 3ft area then I build up 6"/150cm layers making sure each one is firmed down before adding the next layer. this style of heap keeps its shape and rots down in 3 to 4 months. And I add everything from weeds to chicken bones, if it. can rot I add it. in the winter I often go around the allotment site collecting the dying weeds leaves etc etc just with the aim of building a compost heap

You're great! Thanks for the advice. I am currently trialing a new method of composting. It';s the 18 day hot compost method. You need to keep turning the heap every 2 days. I'm on day 13 and it;s looking pretty good so far. It's a bit hotter here than Wales though, so I am also watering the heap as it keeps drying out. (Maybe it'll grow into a bigger heap ha ha).

I have found that composting on any flat surface is fine. Any type of poly sheet to cover. You can sieve the potting soil out and maintain the compost in various stages even if there is a blending of the different products it is still all compost as you stack onto s pile all the large chunks seem to fall down the pile and can be picked up and sorted later

Hello Huw, thank you for the video, it's very instructive and well made. I always wonder why people don't paint their pallets so they don't rust and degrade so fast? if sanded and painted they last much longer, turning a cheap piece of wood and nails into a surprisingly lasting structure.
@Zachry863 жыл бұрын
Simply put: I regard compost as the food i eat. Do I want to want to mix in and eat paint flakes and chemical residue in X years time? The pallets will brake down, but they are cheap so just make them easy to replace in the future. I do the same, but with fence posts and galvanized netting. There are so many ways of doing this. Just get creative with what you have available. In essence a pile of organic material on the ground will do the same.
