Just watched you video on making a repeated tile template,can I ask where do you save the template to for instance in photoshop you can save to swatches,is there a similar place in Designer to save to.

Thanks for the video! I have a question I can’t find the answer to! If I want to make a pattern using this technique but by importing a logo I’ve already made into that first art board box how do I do it? I’ve tried just placing the image and it goes into the 1st art board. Then I move it onto the symbol later to create the repeat in art board 2 and the image is just a solid grey shape of the vector I want to repeat in every box! There’s no pattern and it’s driving me crazy 🙄🤪🤪🤪 am i doing something wrong?

Thank you so much! This method is very practical and I would't know if I didn't find your tutorial. You've helped me a lot with this.

Beautifully made and explained! Affinity really needs to add a vector fill pattern tool to Designer that makes this somewhat easier, and that allows filling any shape with such a tiling pattern.
@Hackedlives653 жыл бұрын
You'd need to buy Affinity photo for that. I have all 3 tools and I must say they are more functional together.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your Affinity tutorials. I've been wanting to get into pattern design but a lot of the tutorials on Skillshare about how to do that use Photoshop or Illustrator. I'm able to work my way around most of it but I could not for the life of me figure out how to get a repeat or smart object thing going on. This has been a lifesaver. You've got a new subscriber. xx

She also has a great pattern design on Skill Share as well as some great designing classes on Affinity Designer which I have taken too, that's how I found out about her as an amazing teacher.

Thx vor this Video. Just a question. Is there a easier was to do Pantern on affinity Designer in 2019?
@EastCoastCharm5 жыл бұрын
You can just create the pattern without the repeat showing next to it.

@@EastCoastCharm i dont get it sorry. i want to create a seamless repeated graphic patern wich repeates over and over again nomatter how big i draw a rectangle... so is there a easyer way to do so'
@EastCoastCharm5 жыл бұрын
Create just the repeat tile and save that. You can then use bitmap to seamlessly repeat it in any shape. Here's a video where I use bitmap with a pattern. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oISzn2SVmJJ-jNk

thank you for this tutorial, so very helpful! question, and sorry if this is dumb, but how did you create the preview area?
@lhawkins405 жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question at all, the preview area was created by making another art-board 1:18 on the video, then going back to little art-board which is Artboard 1 to do the work on , copy and paste your squares on 2, but continue to work on the first one for your pattern only, you will see any changes made on Artboard 2 in real time of how your pattern will look.

I want to create vector patterns that people can use in Affinity or Illustrator. If I make them like this in Affinity, will they work in Illustrator, like pattern swatches I have bought in the past? I don't want to continue to pay the Illustrator subscription, and but hoping to still be able to design resources that are compatible with both programs since I think the market is larger for resources that work in the Adobe programs.

How to remove the lines between the squares?

Great video; very clear and easy to follow. What is the difference between an artboard and a document? Thanks.
@EastCoastCharm6 жыл бұрын
Most of the time I use the term interchangeably in my videos to just mean the area that you can design in. However, you can have multiple artboards (the area that you can design in) within one document. For example, I use one document for business card designs and have two artboards in that document (one for the front of the card and one for the back).

Backtracked couple of times, all was perfect until I added the ellipse. It did not show in artboard 2. My layers were the same as yours, I messed with sync in the symbols panel. Searched Google some but no solution. Not motivated much to solve at this time. Have moved to using bitmap fill for patterns. I think template designing could be useful though. Someone said you could have several pages of a publication open at the same time, or back and front pages. It would be nice to know why board 2 won't show the ellipse. I figure it's a setting. I'm using AD 1.8.5.703, Win 10, desktop. Thanks.

I had used different dimensions for my 2 artboards, 1000px and 3000px. When I used your exact dimensions, 2" and 8", and checked my layers again at each stage, my design came out like yours.

hello, i have all 3 affinity apps on my mac, but cant find a simple cd label template to just place a regular square photo into this template to end up with a round shape an a hole in the middle. Can you help me?

I love how easy and intuitive this seems, and your delivery is perfectly paced for this beginner. I was unable to get Artboard 1 to appear on Artboard 2 (which is somehow called Artboard 3 on the screen.) Would appreciate any suggestions! Many thanks ---

This is exactly what I have been looking for! Although I have just spent over an hour trying 15x ore more to follow your video and while your explanation Is Very Good I get different results. I can make the symbol no problem, I get as far as timestamp 3:24 and there is no arrow going down from the layers each layer is its own separate layer no child layer (although there is a little red line next to Artboard 3&1 in the layers panel. (?). Nothing happened when I move the layers to the "little symbol that looks like a piece of paper" as you mentioned. That where it all goes wrong. Then you when you go to move some layers it is too small to see what is being done,. To see this layers are being moved. (I have tried watching it both on a computer and an iPad. On one attempt I also had the word Artboard transfer over into each box of the big Artboard 2. Are artboards 1& 3 supposed to be grouped before copying over to Artboard 2? I am fairly new to Affinity but have been working with ALL of the other Serif programs for over 20+ years and I'm very frustrated that something so well laid out won't work for me. What am I doing wrong ?

love the video, so easy for me to learn as an affinity beginner! I know the larger grid is just to see how the pattern is viewed when tiled, but I did, however get hung up on those lines when copying my symbol objects across and how they never seem to join up correctly. I am using the latest version and my lines were even larger than the ones you show in your video. anyhow, I managed to find a good way of fixing this by setting up a grid the same size as my first artboard with the rectangle ie. 900px X 1200px (Advanced, First Axis 900px by 1200 divisions & Second Axis, 1200px by 1200 divisions). then i managed to copy the objects and align them perfectly to the grid sizes by zooming in and all looked brilliant. I did a photo but then realised I can't upload it here... thanks again :)

So am I missing something? is there no pattern swatches in affinity? No pattern fill? I've made dozens of patterns in my ancient AI and updated to AD but so far AD is making things really difficult for me. No spiral tool, no drag and drop swatches, patterns etc. I'm reading everything I can and watching videos galore but so not finding simple answers.

This was by far the easiest tutorial to follow on the topic however my dilemma remains the same.. How do we get this pattern into another object? Say for instance on t-shirt we want to show as a seamless print?? I've watched 4 tutorials on this topic and have yet to find one that demonstrates the use of a pattern outside of a square box :/
@lhawkins405 жыл бұрын
You would have t o make a new document, go over to the left side and select the shape you would like say you wanted a circle, next select the fill tool it's four tool up from shape tool, once selected, look at the top where it says fill on the menu, select Bitmap choose your pattern you made and select the lock to maintain the ratio so your pattern won't be stretched, and use the handles on your pattern to size up or down to your liking and you now have any shape for your T-shirt. Just make sure to follow the tutorial above then export your pattern and save as a PNG or JPEG . If you are using raster images it still works the same, except use place image then open your pattern, and drag your pattern below until you see the line turn blue and you can create a clipping mask with the pattern inside the object, which gives you a beautiful look too! Happy creating
