By popular demand: how to create a shred guitar sound on the Yamaha Montage and MODX!
Montage Screen
I had a few questions about you guys on what gear I use to record the Montage screen. Here's what I use:
USB to HDMI from Montage: amzn.to/2yEy4wz
Video to USB video capture: amzn.to/39XnihQ (not sure why it's so expensive now, but that's what I got ages ago!)

Any possibility you will do a video with this guitar using Arp functions? Thinking of getting the ModX for the guitars and what seemed to be 10,000 Arp functions? I would extremely like to use guitar sounds with Arp function that go beyond just the usual. Thanks much for this vid.

Hi, Dom. I actually did something like this, although my trick was to disable all the effects and route that exact preset out of the aux outputs to an external amp simulator like a line6 pod x3 live or a fractal ax8. Your sound is great, though, but I think the external amp sim may take it to another level. I also had an alternate preset where I assigned a pinch harmonic type sound to high velocities and I also changed the pitch bend down to 1 octave. Recently, I've extended the pitch bend down to something like -48, which introduces some stepping, but if you work it right, you can do those extreme divebomb type effects.

Nice! There’s a right way to play guitar sounds on a keyboard and you NAILED it! Would be super awesome if you could do something like Ave Maria in this style. Or maybe I will for a Christmas album😁 Off topic ... I have the MODX8, which I really love, but I’m considering trading up for a Montage 7. My only concern is all the User Performances I’ve put together. Is there a way to transfer those from a MODX to a Montage? Is it as simple as downloading them from a USB flash drive that has the MODX User Performances?

Like Mauwin said , I started studying classical piano at the age of 6 (was playing keyboards before this though!). Speed is not the hard but though for sure! Expression and phrasing are much more important! There are many exercises you can do to acquire speed fast. :) try the Hanon book of piano exercises, start slow and gradually go up in speed- this book is a miracle!

+Preston Fordstrom nice trick! What I would do is add a muted clean guitar waveform in one of the element slots (or a separate part with the same effects) and then assign it to very low velocity levels while keeping the other elements over say 20 velocity values ;) hope this makes sense!

Hi Dom, I have a huge problem on the Montage. It's about how does the Mod Wheel and Pitch Bender behave. Their behavior is illogical: 1. The Pitch bender would spring back to normal physically, but if I pitch bended between "Scenes", when I go back to the first scene it would stuck into the last pitch bend! meaning the pitch is changed until I touch the pitch bender! 2. The Mod Wheel would stay in the position you set physically, but when I change the scene and back, it would reset to the original position digitally! So even the wheel is UP, Montage would recognize it as DOWN until I move it. That also mess up the expression of moving the mod wheel, because I jump from original position to the current physical position. Is there anyway I can solve this problem, is there setting I do not know that the Montage has to fix this? Would your connection with Yamaha help fixing this issue for the future update?
@DomSigalas
@DomSigalas 4 жыл бұрын
I have never come across this! I will have a look once I’m back in the studio, I am on the road right now :) Have a look at the Scenes settings in the performance view- you can select what gets selected with the Scene change. Scenes can actually recall specific values for the SuperKnob and the MW so you might need to uncheck those!
@Kingstonlomusic
@Kingstonlomusic 4 жыл бұрын
Dom Sigalas unfortunately, they are unchecked already. "Scene > everything is off except Kbd Ctrl which I need to change sound smoothly" It is the one causing the problem though, but it doesn't have option for me to set it only leave out the mod wheel and pitch bend. Unless there is a way to make the scene change mute smoother without a sudden cutoff, then the problem will be solved.
@Kingstonlomusic
@Kingstonlomusic 4 жыл бұрын
I don't want to use the mute for scene change is because I don't like it doesn't allow me to sustain the sound across the scene.

Hello Dom. In this sound you changed Master EQ settings from flat to something else. If we add this guitar as a part of another performance, which has different Master EQ settings, guitar sound will change it's sound character. On Montage we have 3-way EQ for parts and 5-way Common EQ, so if we combine this guitar sound with another performance it wouldn't sound the same and we can't correct it as a part. Do you have any solution for this problem?

I mean I don’t think it’s worth it. As a MODX owner I’m still discovering new stuff everyday. I would rather they just keep adding new engines to the Montage/MODX. I personally want a VA engine and a Piano/tone wheel engine before a Montage/MODX 2
@tuneunleashed

47 PE Honestly I don’t think they would do that.I think they will just keep adding features but not new engines it’s been 4 years since the Yamaha Montage didn’t do nothing to the bored other than fix bugs in the update and adding small new features that don’t really make a difference like the smart morph. Yamaha realized they could have done much more and provided much more with the Yamaha was aiming the Montage to be a Performance/Synthesizer like a “Roland Jupiter 80”at first before it was announced as a Performance Synthesizer/Workstation late 2019 once the New Fantom was released as an answer to Roland. I guess Roland woke them up! That’s why I’m more excited about the “Yamaha Montage/MODX Mark II”(2) and waiting for that instead. Traded my Montage 8 for a Nord Stage 3. Although I do miss few things but I know the Montage 2 will be the ultimate workstation that I can’t wait! They will definitely add most of the ideas on Yamaha Ideascale in there so..let’s wait and see.
