When you have to drag up the pattern for the animation, make sure it starts and ends with the same image, use the flattened version as a guide to know where to put it. I know this comment is hella old but it might help someone out!

I managed to do this but I'm having trouble merging it with a gif. I have an already animated frame animation of lava but when I try to add the embers it loses it's animation. How do I fix this?

You need to fill it with white. Make sure your foreground colour is white and press Alt + Backspace. Hope that Helps.

How do u export this files?

Just go to the File menu and got to Export and choose Save for Web Legacy to save as a gif or you can go to Render Video to export a movie file.
