This video really hit the nail on the head. I often find people easy to figure out because we often fall into certain categories (i.e. "The Perfectionist"), and those categories often to have pretty consistent accompanying tendencies. It's absolutely crucial to apply this to creating believable characters.

Extremely helpful, I'm useless and lost without structure and you've given me a way to identify and structure my character builds quickly and easily. Thank you!

I think the typing of secondary characters is a little difficult because you don’t get to always see them as healthy and you might only see them under stress (hence mistyping them).

I also have a character I mistyped as a 7 at first but later discovered was a 2w3. She's an extremely bubbly, fun-loving, friendly, enthusiastic and emotional Barbie-esque doll. I knew she longs to be unconditionally loved and fears ending up alone but I was hesitant to type her as a 2 because like I said, she's pretty emotional. She also doesn't really hide or deny her needs. But when I discovered subtypes and countertypes it all made sense. She's a Self Preservation 2w3. SP 2s tend to be a little more childish and seek to be cared for BY others more so than care FOR others. Not that she never cares for others, but especially at the start she's pretty needy and surprisingly insecure. She always craves others approval. So this makes a lot more sense for her.

My MC in the first book is a Bratz-esque doll whom I believe is a 1w2. She's extremely driven, intelligent, bookish, disciplined and eager to prove she's more than just a pretty face. It's interesting that you type Hermione Granger as a 3, most other sources type her as a 1. I often describe my MC as "Hermione Granger or Twilight Sparkle if they were trapped in Sasha from the Bratz body (sans magic, just in terms of personality)"

Very useful video! Just one type example I don't agree with is Dr Strange. At least in the movie he was obsessed with glory that his job of a surgeon might bring. Over time he grew to realise there are more important things than his image in people's eyes. In my view his type is clear 3. Sherlock Holmes might be a better example of 5 here.

This is great, and so is your explanation. I'd love to use this but I don't think my brain works like that. I usually just "know" the character, the only thing I really need to think about is the character arc, so figuring out the Want, Need, Lie, and Backstory. The Enneagram could probably help with that, but I'm afraid I'd try to force certain need or want on a character so it'd fit them.

I came back to this video and the video you mention in this one as a refresher on creating characters with the Enneagram. While I found that I'm a 4w5, when I took the Enneagram test as the main characters for two stories I'm plotting right now, I was surprised to learn what their numbers were. For my "Supernatural meets Percy Jackson" novel, I was surprised to see that both characters were 6s. But Millie, the main character, is a 6w5, while her friend Cody is a 6w7. After watching these videos and skimming that chapter in The Road Back To You, I thought about the backstories I'd constructed for each and realized how perfect those wings were for Millie and Cody. My character, Joss, in my sci-fi Bible story retelling, appears to be a 1w2.

Serendipity! I've been looking for a good character profile that meshes with the Enneagram for two days. I glanced over the reference sheets already; they look great. 👍 Nice to find another type five writer, too. My heroine is a type six, I think. It's still early in the process.

This is great! Thank you so much for sharing this! I'll have to go through my Project Star Dreamer draft with this video to see which Enneagrams my characters are. And possibly the characters I created for the Power Rangers RPG my brothers and I are about to play.

1. Yes, I did just go buy The Road Back to You after watching this video. I’m saying it’s an author business expense 😂 2. I know this video was a beast to film and edit, but you did GREAT! I love how thoroughly you researched and compiled the information for everyone. 3. I think it’s hilarious that you consider Ron a 6, which is my enneagram type. Yet I can’t STAND him 😂. Yes, I did want Rowling to kill him off, though like I said yesterday, I do think that’s because he’s such a well-written character lol

Harry is not an enneagram 1, he is an 9. Hermione is not a 3, rather I say she is an 1.Hagrid is a 2.
